Hearthstone - Blackrock Mountain - Three New Dragon Cards

Recommended Posts

A new post this morning revealed the next three cards coming to Hearthstone in next month's Blackrock Mountain adventure. High-cost Dragon minions with new interactions with minion deaths, opponent health, and a legendary Dragon of some notoriety are within...

The complete post is as follows:

Nefarian really, really loves experiments—specifically mad experiments. He loves them so much that he’s had himself re-animated and is now back from the dead, fully ready to resume his twisted work. Being a very goal-oriented dragon, he’s outfitted another secret laboratory deep inside Blackrock Mountain, complete with sparking lightning coils, vats of questionable substances, and the sounds of draconic agony. Nefarian spared no expense in decking this place out with all the tools, materials, minions, and victims he needs to succeed. He even had his pad tricked out with amazing Dark Iron technology (Hint: It’s not a sound system, though that would be totally sweet).

In Blackrock Mountain: A Hearthstone Adventure you can follow Blackwing’s descent into his vile Hidden Laboratory and brave the horrors of his hideous experiments to recruit some of Nefarian’s most useful minions for your collection.

Family Matters

In a given dragonflight, not all dragonkin are equally powerful. Drakes are younger dragons, and Nefarian keeps a bunch of these around to do his bidding. They do it all, including acting as guards, enforcers, mounts for favored allies (lookin’ at you Rend), cook, clean, do chores around the lair, and are really great at disposing of excess adventurers.

They have a weakness for snacks, so if you have some tasty corpses handy, a drake will be your best friend forever.

He’s a Drakonid. He crushes things. He crushes injured heroes really well. What more do you want?

Nefarian, AKA, Blackwing, AKA Victor Nefarius, Lord of Blackrock. When he’s not smashing intruders with his sorcerous might, he enjoys long walks through his domain, the sound of victims sniveling in fear, and quality time on his throne. His family is known across the land for their wisdom, restraint, and humility. Psyche! His family tree includes some of the most hideously evil dragons Azeroth has ever known, including his sister Onyxia and their father, Deathwing. They’re all pretty much the worst kind of awful, but true to his name, Nefarian is, well, nefarious. Not only does he have that being a huge dragon deal going for him, he’s also cunning and manipulative, as evidenced by his not-so-friendly rivalry with the elemental Firelord Ragnaros (probably because they’re both really terrible neighbors). Neighborhood watch? More like neighborhood watch your back!

You need magic? Nefarian’s got magic aplenty, and he delights in using his enemies’ tools against them.

Are you ready to face the traps, tricks, and tribulations Nefarian has waiting for you in his Hidden Laboratory? Ruin all of a dragon’s carefully crafted plans in Hearthstone’s second thrilling Adventure, Blackrock Mountain—coming soon!

Volcanic Drake uses the same functionality as the previously revealed Dragon's Breath, and would be efficiently costed if 2+ minions died in a given turn. The 4 health weak spot (Truesilver Champion, several 3- and 4-cost minions, Swipe, etc.) makes it seem like it has limited appeal, but any deck getting otherwise efficient trades could make use of this card under the right circumstances.

Drakonid Crusher is one of the more interesting cards revealed so far. We haven't seen anything for cards in the game so far that interacts with enemy health (as opposed to your own health, a la Mortal Strike), and a 6/6 typed minion for 6 mana would already be strong without the Battlecry potential. Could be a huge tempo swing in the late game.

Nefarian has some unfortunate RNG - no one wants to be the player who gets hung with Savagery, Blade Flurry, Totemic Might, and so on - but could be massively beneficial as well. He is effectively a Thoughtsteal for 1 mana on an 8/8 vanilla creature for 8, which definitely has value.

UPDATE: CM Whirthun provided the following clarification on Nefarian:

Will you be playing any of these three new Neutral Dragon cards?

Volcanic Drake: what you save in dead minions should be used on buffing it so it would actually work on turn 6.

Crusher: for those decks that take allow lots of damage to face because they have healbot and such... This could be used a lot right now.

Nefarian: which class has the best spells? It'll be hard to fit it into the meta...

I know you touched on the "rng" Odinn in your podcast spells like Ragnaros / Brawl etc.  I love cards like Nerfarian as it just has that random factor.

A bit like unstable portal it will always keep players guessing and in some cases win / lose the game.

Right before the news for the upcoming PvE Adventure hits, Blizzard announced some much needed balance changes.
Two card buffs from the May update will be reverted, while three more cards will be nerfed in an update coming next week.
In May, we had the first card buffs in Hearthstone's history. In an occasion like that, it was certain that some of these buffs would be hit or miss. While there were definitely some misses, some of these biffs hit harder than expected and thus they will now will be reverted. These cards are Extra Arms, which will go back to costing 3 mana, and Luna's Pocket Galaxy going back to 7 mana.

Two more cards from Standard are also getting nerfed in the August 26 update. Mage will suffer another big loss, as Conjurer's Calling will now cost 4 mana (up from 3).

Another much needed nerf is that of Dr. Boom, Mad Genius. The 7-mana 7/7 (infinite 7s) meme started from the original card will be no more, as the cost of this heavily used Hero card will be upped to 9.

Finally, a lot of Wild players can breathe out in relief as Barnes' cost will be increased to 5 mana, up from 4. I am not sure if this will be enough to alleviate the frustrations of the Wild community with the Legendary minion, but at least it's a step to the right direction.

You can read about Blizzard's thinking behind these nerfs in the official blog post.

In this new Brawl, all minions work like Nightmare Amalgam.
This means that all minions count as Elementals, Mechs, Demons, Murlocs, Dragons, Beasts, Pirates and Totems!
Since this a Constructed Tavern Brawl, you want to build your deck carefully. It's  clever to focus on synergies of a specific Tribe (Murloc, Pirate and Mech/Magnetic decks being the most successful ones so far) but you can also create some busted combos if you mix and match.
Key cards for each type of Tribe include:
Elementals: Lesser Ruby Spellstone, Frost Lich Jaina Mechs: Galvanizer, Mechwarper, Magnetic cards Demons: Ectomancy, Sacrificial Pact, Sense Demons Murlocs: Murloc Warleader, Underbelly Angler, Old Murk-Eye - basically anything that has Murloc written on it Dragons: Duskbreaker, Wyrmrest Agent, Drakonid Operative, Twilight Guardian Beasts: Crackling Razormaw, Master's Call, Scavenging Hyena, Revenge of the Wild Pirates: Ship's Cannon, Patches the Pirate Totems: Thing from Below, Totemic Surge, Splitting Axe Some Tribe combinations favour specific classes (like Elemental for Mages and Beasts for Hunters and Druids) or are strictly restricted to them (Totems and Demons), while classes like Shaman enjoy the freedom of being decent for various deck styles.
Don't forget to grab your Hungry Crab, Golakka Crawler and a board clear - you are going to need them! Menagerie cards will also buff nicely your entire board.
