Blood DK: to Soul Reaper or not to Soul Reaper, that is the question.

5 posts in this topic

G'day. So, the title catches it all:

As a Blood DK, should I use ability_deathknight_soulreaper.jpgSoul Reaper at all?

In the guide, it talks about it as an execute down in the "details" section, but it isn't listed in the actual rotation part.

Looking at the stats, I think it would be good to drop in when I would otherwise use inv_weapon_shortblade_40.jpgHeart Strike in my rotation, at least when I have less than three targets.

(By my math I do more damage with the 100K "dot" from ability_deathknight_soulreaper.jpgSoul Reaper than 2x50% splash from inv_weapon_shortblade_40.jpgHeart Strike would do, but I can imagine that may not always be true.)

The resource cost is identical, so it would be a clean drop-in replacement where I currently use (and the guide recommends) inv_weapon_shortblade_40.jpgHeart Strike.

So, thoughts? Is this just an omission in the rotation? In my testing (solo) even one hit usually puts it in my top five sources of damage on 3-4 million HP mobs, so I can only assume that it would hit harder

Definitely use soul reaper whenever the target is under 35%. it hits roughly twice as hard as heart strike for the same rune cost. It may be an omission in the guide, or it could just be because soul reaper isn't essential to "tanking". but it is definitely essential if you're trying to maximize your tank dps.

Thanks -- that was what I thought.  Are you the right person (or is creating this thread the right place) to get the Blood DK rotation guide updated to reflect that?  Right now it doesn't mention using Soul Reaper at all, which is what brought me to question this in the first place.  If not, can you point me to the right place or person?  (Sorry not to know that ahead of time :)

Given that it seems like it hits just as hard, it seems like a clear win to update the guide to reflect that even if it isn't essential for tanking. :)

Furthermore if you manage to get it on adds before the DPS finish them the extra hasted melee swings  offer a slight survivability gain through scent of blood.

I think only Damien and Vlad can update the guides. The best way to get their attention is probably to post a comment in the thread in the class guides forum.

All applications will be reviewed and considered however if you are playing a class/spec combination we need then your chances of joining will be higher.
A little bit of info about us:
We are a group of friends and serious raiders on EU Twisting Nether looking to recruit skilled like-minded players into our roster for Mythic Legion raids and onwards. We will offer a sociable and fun raiding environment while maintaining a strong desire for progression. Our Discord is very active and we encourage all members to chat and play together not only for raids. The guild formed late March 2016 and fully cleared 13/13 Mythic Hellfire Citadel pre nerf shortly after. We've since been improving our world ranking every tier.
We currently raid 3 days per week on Mythic: Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday 19:15-22:15 server time. While it is not a lot we try to make the most out of our time. We run optional heroic/normal/alt/previous tier raids during off days in which raiders are welcome to come to. Our members also play other games outside raid times together where anyone is welcome to join(LoL, PUBG, HotS, Overwatch etc.).
Our loot system for Mythic is RC Loot Council.
      What we expect from you:
      - We are a raiding guild with only a 9 hour per week schedule so you are expected to attend and be ON TIME! However we understand things can come up sometimes but please let us know.
      - Be able to speak and understand the English language and not be afraid to communicate with other members during raids.
      - Actively doing dungeons/world quests to improve your gear and artifact weapon.
      - Have a strong understanding of the current raid tier and be able to play your class to it's potential.
      - Always come to raids prepared(i.e. bringing food and potions, etc).
      - Come fully gemmed and enchanted with the correct stats for your class and spec.
      - Access to Discord and a working microphone.
      - Have a computer that can handle 20 man raiding and a good, stable internet connection.
      - Exorsus Raid Tools, Weakauras2 and RC Loot Council addons installed. We may ask you to install others.
If you have any further questions please contact us at battletags:
      Stjern#2802 or Azkey#21565

      Hello everyone
My guild and I raided EN last sunday and cleared normal mode easy enough and because we still had time, we started a heroic run aswell. For HC, I started a log that includes the boss kills Nythendra, Il'gynoth and Dragons of Nightmare.
I am able to extract quite a bit of information for healers and DDs, but it seems that I don't really know what to look for, when trying to determine MY performance as a Blood DK (Yovana). I'm sure the information is there, but when it comes to Tanks in general, I'm struggling a little bit.
In general, I think I'm doing ok because I don't get complaints from the healers and I don't really die, but if someone could point out obvious mistakes or inefficiencies, that would be very helpful.
What catches my eye is the rather high amount of overheal of DS with 40%. I know that this is not really good, but then again, if I'm not taking any substantial amount of dmg, I'm not gonna sit on my runes and instead deal dmg with DS. So that explains the overheal a bit.
Note that we had to top off our group with random players (1 random healer and several random DDs).
      Log: https://www.warcraftlogs.com/reports/K6pPWQz2jGCrX9aM#boss=-2&difficulty=0&type=summary
Thank you all for any help in this matter and have a nice day

      hello friends, first post here
quick question regarding Grotesque Statuette for blood dk, just got it out of my il'gynoth class hall cache at 870. I understand that mastery is pretty terrible for blood and that the trinket just got nerfed/hotfixed as far as I'm aware, so I'm wondering if it's even worth using. seems like in my testing so far it only stacks to 3-4 at max on bosses and seemed very low for trash pulls.
was using a memento of angerboda (855) before, so tanking wise its definitely the better trinket, but I'm not even sure if losing 1.3k strength is worth it.

I have now, 4 trinkets that I am conflicted on using as they all seem to have decent stats and usages/passives. I am mainly tanking mythic dungeons, although our guild does normal EN but I have no problem there.

What do you think would be the best 2 to use in general?

      Hi,
I boosted a Blood DK and gathered this gear together in about a week and a half.  Now I'm helping my guild progress through HFC N. I don't think I need any gear from N, apart from a few things that might be better if they are WF. I am getting questions as to why I don't want any of the gear and I answer with, "Wrong stats." At which point should I start accepting the fact that not everything has M/M and equip gear with less than nominal stats in order to increase my ilvl?  Is there a Multistrike number I should reach and be "ok" with leaving it there when I do put on other stats.  Mr. Robot's advice on BiS had me losing tons of Multistrike and lots of Mastery.  Do I simply have the wrong idea about all of it?   Thank you for any help given.
