An upgraded version of the Whimsical Spectacle Set. master illusionists bent on "deceiving the very stars" once wore these formal costumes onto the most exalted stages, with gravitas and grace as much a part of the act as anything else.
After the phantom thieves' show-stopping performance, the astronomer's children, moved to the core, sought the two out and became their students. In just two years, they had surpassed their teachers, becoming a new generation of master illusionists.
"If illusions can bring down fanatics, it can surely be used to hide cities too... provided the budget's there, and everyone plays their part."
On the eve of Octavia's departure, the two master illusionists gained one last smidge of aid from their otherworldly visitor. Thus, they mounted the second grand illusion show, unprecedented then and never quite matched since. Their command of the art was all but flawless. They wrapped the busiest city in the world in the illusion of a mountain, and from a hot-air balloon in the clouds, you couldn't spot the seams. If this technique could be applied stably across every city, they might really be able to fool the dangerous eyes above the sky...
Even years later, Octavia would still, from time to time, take out her photo with the two master illusionists, remember the details of that night's performance, and gaze through her telescope at the planet "that seemed to have no civilization," silently wishing that they might hold on, quietly and patiently building up the strength they'd need...
