WotLK Classic Alchemy Profession and Leveling 1-450 Guide
Players with Alchemy can create many important consumables in WotLK. Further, Alchemists can transmute items. Without these transmutes, many other professions could not craft their best items. This guide explains to you how Alchemy works in WotLK Classic, shows you all Alchemy recipes, and where to get them.
Introduction
Alchemy is a very useful profession to have in WotLK Classic, as with it you may craft powerful Potions, Elixirs, Flasks, and perform Transmutes to create reagents for other professions. The power gap between Alchemy and other professions during TBC Classic has been closed in Wrath of the Lich King, as all professions now give roughly the same bonuses. However, depending on your class, other professions might still be slightly better for you. The consumables created by Alchemy are considered to be very important for any kind of competitive PvE or PvP content. In addition, a new perk added in WotLK Alchemy are the new Alchemist stones, Indestructible Alchemist's Stone, Mercurial Alchemist Stone, and Mighty Alchemist's Stone, which can make a good pre-raid trinket or can even be used out of combat between pulls to gain more Mana/healing from Mana and healing potions. These trinkets also serve as a Philosopher's Stone.
Potions
Potions, such as Runic Mana Potion or Potion of Speed instantly grant you a variety of benefits, and may have their effects linger for a short time. Using a potion triggers a 1-minute cooldown, however, and can only be used once per combat. Potions also usually require the least amount of materials to create. There are also Protection potions, such as the Mighty Shadow Protection Potion, which can be produced with two Crystallized elements and one Imbued Vial. In comparison to TBC, the cauldrons are gone. A new feature of WotLK are the Endless Healing Potions and Endless Mana Potions, which are not consumed but have a lower effect. This can be useful for leveling and dungeons. Potions are not affected by Mixology.
Elixirs
Elixirs, such as Elixir of Accuracy or Elixir of Mighty Fortitude typically grant you a useful 1-hour buff to increase stats beneficial to your class. Elixirs usually require a small or moderate amount of materials to create in comparison to flasks, but their usefulness depends completely on your class. In WotLK Classic elixirs are still categorized under the Battle and Guardian types. You can be under the effect of only one elixir of each type at a time. Compared to flasks, effects of elixirs are removed upon death. The new Mixology passive of Alchemy grants you a higher effect and duration from the elixirs you can make yourself.
Flasks
Flasks, such as Flask of the Frost Wyrm provide you a 1 hour buff that is improved through Mixology as well. Further, two flasks are now produced instead of one in order to compensate for the duration being lowered compared to previous expansions. Please note that Flask of the North, the endless potion equivalent for flasks, is unaffected by Mixology.
Transmutes
Transmutes, such as Skyflare Diamond and Transmute: Titanium are very sought after by players other professions. In later phases of Wrath of the Lich King, Alchemists can even transmute Epic gems, such as King's Amber, Majestic Zircon, or Cardinal Ruby from Rare gems and eternals. All WotLK Alchemy transmutes share a 20-hour cooldown, while transmutes from Vanilla have no cooldown.
Materials needed
Most of the Alchemy crafts in WotLK Classic require herbs. Some, for example Transmute: Earthsiege Diamond, require Gems and/or Eternals to be created. Combining Alchemy with Herbalism to gather your own herbs, Mining to gather gems from ore deposits, or Jewelcrafting to receive gems from prospecting ores can be beneficial.
Specializations
An addition to Alchemy, introduced back in TBC Classic, are three specializations:
- Elixir Master — has a chance to produce additional Elixirs or Flasks.
- Potion Master — has a chance to produce additional Potions.
- Transmutation Master — has a chance to produce additional Transmutes.
Each specialization grants roughly 20% extra potions/elixirs/flasks/transmutes. How exactly these specializations work and how they can be learned will be covered in the specialization section of this guide.
Alchemy Training and Trainers
Skill levels 1-300 (Apprentice to Artisan) are taught by trainers in the capital cities of each faction. Talking to any city guard will open a dialogue window which can lead you to the profession trainers by showing a red flag on the map and an arrow on the minimap.
Skill levels 300-375 (Master) can be learned exclusively in Outland. Alliance players learn the Master Alchemy skill from Alchemist Gribble in the tower of Honor Hold, Hellfire Peninsula. Horde players learn it from Apothecary Antonivich, who is also in a tower, but in Thrallmar, Hellfire Peninsula. Both factions can also learn the Master Alchemy skill from Lorokeem in Lower City, Shattrath.
Skill levels 375-450 (Grand Master) are learned in Northrend.
- Alliance players may learn it through one of two sources
- Falorn Nightwhisper in Valiance Keep, Borean Tundra
- Lanolis Dewdrop in Valgarde, Howling Fjord
- Horde players need to seek out one of two other trainers
- Arthur Henslowe in Warsong Hold, Borean Tundra
- Wilhelmina Renel in Vengeance Landing, Howling Fjord
- As in TBC, there are also neutral trainers.
- Linzy Blackbolt can be found in Dalaran
- Crystal Brightspark is located at the Argent Tournament in Icecrown, though they are not available until a later phase.
Leveling Alchemy
In order to level Alchemy efficiently, you will want to craft items that appear Orange or Yellow in your Alchemy crafting window. Orange items guarantee a skill-up while Yellow have a high chance of granting a skill-up. Crafting Green items for leveling Alchemy should be only considered when you can sell the crafted items on the auction house for profits. Gray items never give skill-ups.
The tricky part about leveling Alchemy is that there is no 'right' way of doing it, as material, potion, elixir, and flask prices differ from server to server and from day to day. You can end up buying very cheap herbs from the auction house in the morning, and paying 5 times the price in the evening or during the weekend.
Alchemy Specializations
The three available Alchemy specializations for Elixirs and Flasks, Potions, and Transmutations are a feature in WotLK Classic that is returning from TBC. Each specialization will give each craft of either Elixirs and Flasks, Potions, or Transmutations a small chance to create an additional item, and the same bonus can apply to subsequent crafts. Observations have shown that on average a specialization will produce around 20% more crafted items than one would have without the specialization. You can choose to learn only one out of the three specializations.
Learning the Specializations
In Hellfire Peninsula, the faction-specific Alchemy trainers offer three quests when you are at least Level 68 and have an Alchemy skill of 325 or higher.
Elixir Master
Accept Master of Elixirs. This quest will send you to Lorokeem, the neutral Alchemy trainer in Shattrath. Once you have handed the quest in, Lorokeem offers you the quest Master of Elixirs with the same name, but a different objective. Lorokeem asks you to bring him:
- 10 Essence of Infinity — Obtained from Rift Keepers and Rift Lords in The Black Morass;
- 5 Elixir of Major Defense — Created with 15 Ancient Lichen, 5 Terocone, and 5 Imbued Vial;
- 5 Elixir of Mastery — Created with 15 Terocone, 5 Felweed, and 5 Imbued Vial;
- 5 Elixir of Major Agility — Created with 5 Terocone, 10 Felweed, and 5 Imbued Vial.
This is an easy Alchemy specialization quest and upon completion, you will become an Elixir Master.
Potion Master
Accept Master of Potions and travel to Lauranna Thar'well in the Cenarion Refuge in Zangarmarsh. After handing the quest in, accept part 2 of Master of Potions. Before granting you the specialization, Lauranna needs:
- Botanist's Field Guide — Obtained from High Botanist Freywinn in The Botanica;
- 5 Super Healing Potion — Created with 10 Netherbloom, 5 Felweed, and 5 Imbued Vial;
- 5 Super Mana Potion — Created with 10 Dreaming Glory, 5 Felweed, and 5 Imbued Vial;
- 5 Major Dreamless Sleep Potion Created with 5 Dreaming Glory, 5 Nightmare Vine, and 5 Imbued Vial.
Lauranna will reward you with Potion Master. This specialization is the cheapest and easiest of all three Alchemy specializations to acquire.
Transmutation Master
Accept Master of Transmutation and seek out Zarevhi in the Stormspire, Netherstorm. After handing in part 1, Zarevhi offers Master of Transmutation part 2. You need to bring Zarevhi:
- 4 Primal Might — transmuted by Alchemists of skill level 350 and above, requiring a total of 4 Primal Earth, 4 Primal Water, 4 Primal Air, 4 Primal Fire, and 4 Primal Mana.
After bringing the 4 Primal Mights to Zarevhi, he will share his knowledge of how to become a Transmutation Master with you. This is the most expensive of all three Alchemy specializations because the raw materials of Primal Might are more expensive than for the other specs.
Swapping Alchemy Specializations
If you want to become a Transmutation Master or any of the Alchemy specializations after your initial choice, there is a simple trick to speed up the process. By paying 150 gold to the NPC who gave you your current Alchemy specialization, you can de-specialize and learn another specialization from the three specialization trainers for free. This can be repeated and is the cheapest way of becoming a Transmutation Master, as Elixir Master is chosen as an Alchemist's first spec. Opting for Elixir Master and paying 150 gold is always cheaper than sacrificing 4 Primal Might, as the Primals used for Transmute: Primal Might remain expensive.
Recipes and Sought-After Crafts
In WotLK Classic, some Alchemy creations are learned from Alchemy Trainers, some exist as Recipe items out in the world, and some are learned through discovery. While Recipe items can come as drops or be bought from vendors, discoveries can only be made by crafting Alchemy items from Northrend. Each time you craft anything, there is a small chance to make a discovery and learn recipes not available otherwise. Further, Alchemists in WotLK with at least 400 Alchemy skill can also use Northrend Alchemy Research every 3 days to discover a random new craft. Below you will find a list of all trainable, buyable, and discoverable Alchemy crafts, along with their use or effect.
