About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Diamond Flex player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. General Azmodan Gameplay

Azmodan's peculiar playstyle, centered around his Taste for Blood Icon Taste for Blood talent, means that, optimally, his team's composition should at least include one Hero that can rapidly destroy or otherwise whittle down Minion waves. Proper Hero choices include Arthas, Jaina, Johanna, Kael'thas, Leoric, Malfurion, Murky, Rehgar, Sonya, Sylvanas, Tassadar, Tychus, Valla, and Zagara.

Azmodan's backline role throughout all stages of the game is to use his scaling damage to push and poke from a safe position due to his relative clumsiness and immobility. Though his Basic Attack is not as strong as that of other Specialists or Assassins, his abilities are certainly impactful from a raw damage standpoint. This aspect makes him more reminiscent of caster-type Heroes, such as Jaina or Kael'thas. His damage is a tool that is useful beyond raw Hero killing power, too: Azmodan can waveclear like no other Hero can, and All Shall Burn Icon All Shall Burn decimates Structures, Mercenaries, and Map Objectives alike.

In general, make sure that there is always something friendly — allied Heroes, Structures or Minions — standing between you and your opponents' Heroes. This makes it much harder for them to use their dangerous crowd control abilities against you. This becomes especially important as the game progresses, and as stronger initiation abilities become available, even though Azmodan is seldom a focus target due to his large Health pool.

A common mistake made by Azmodan players is to blindly use Globe Of Annihilation Icon Globe Of Annihilation in the late game. Take your time; even one proper hit against a few Heroes can swing a team fight into your team's favor.

2. When Not Team Fighting

Azmodan has an extremely strong lane presence that requires a response from your opponents from the very start of the game. This is partly due to the fact that hindering Azmodan's Taste for Blood stacking is generally a good way of controlling his scalling, and that he can take down unattended Structures with great efficiency.

Whenever there is a lull in team combat or objective-related action, your priority is to last-hit lane Minions with your Taste for Blood Icon Taste for Blood-talented Globe Of Annihilation Icon Globe Of Annihilation. Not only does this effectively push whatever lane you are currently occupying, but it also permanently increase your damage output. Gathering Taste for Blood stacks can be difficult in the early stages of the game, while your Globe Of Annihilation does not deal much damage, and while you do not yet have access to Black Pool Icon Black Pool. Optimally, you would communicate with an allied player your need for assistance, so that they may use their abilities against Minions to damage them, allowing you to then finish them off easily. This is, however, not always possible, and you might have to rely on your own Basic Attacks and summons to perform this task.

Last-hitting with Globe Of Annihilation has a steep learning curve; newer players might get harassed as they try to attack Minions, whereas even veterans may underestimate their damage and miss their kills by a frustratingly small margin. Remember that you do not have to last-hit every Minion in a wave for Taste for Blood to be effective; you should generally aim to gather at least two stacks per wave so that you have about 40 by the time you reach Hero Level 10. Once Black Pool Icon Black Pool is acquired, Globe Of Annihilation usually deals enough damage to kill 3 or 4 Minions per wave, making stacking up much easier.

Azmodan is not a very good roamer; avoid traveling between lanes while unaccompanied. You are at your best near your Minions. There are times, however, where you must still leave the relative safety of your lane. Your sustained damage output can greatly help your allies to take down Mercenary Camps and enemy Structures. Certain map objectives will also require you to join your team for impending skirmishes and team fights. Good Azmodan players know just when to stop their stacking process to help out their teammates, and this knowledge comes with sheer experience.

3. Team Fighting

Team fighting as Azmodan is straightforward: use Black Pool Icon Black Pool to empower your Globe Of Annihilation Icon Globe Of Annihilation, and aim to hit as many enemies as possible. While Orb Of Annihilation is on cooldown, use a mix of Summon Demon Warrior Icon Summon Demon Warrior and All Shall Burn Icon All Shall Burn to focus down crowd-controlled foes. Repeat the cycle as Orb Of Annihilation and Black Pool come off cooldown. Try and remain behind your frontline; your abilities have plenty of range for you to play safely. In certain scenarios, however, you may want to use Azmodan's large collision to body block for allied Heroes.

4. Summary of Tips and Tricks

  • Ask for help to gather stacks of Taste for Blood; the more you gather, the easier it becomes to gather more.
  • Use General of Hell Icon General of Hell whenever it is available; prioritise empty lanes with plenty of Minions.
  • Alternatively, General of Hell can greatly empower your allies' summons.
  • Keep track of enemy crowd control so that All Shall Burn Icon All Shall Burn is not interrupted.
  • Always keep enough Mana (120) for one Black Pool + Orb Of Annihilation combo.
  • Summon Demon Warrior Icon Summon Demon Warrior is useful for scouting potentially dangerous areas.
