About Our Reviewer

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Xirips, one of the best Balance Druids in the world, who raids in Method. You can follow him on Twitter and you can watch his stream on Twitch.

1. Best in Slot List

Due to the nature of Warforged and Titanforged gear, Mythic+ dungeon loot with Haste can be better than Mythic Emerald Nightmare loot that does not contain Haste. However, for the purposes of this list, the baselines of said loot are weighted against each other. In almost all situations, an 880 item level item (excluding trinkets and jewelry) will be superior to an 865 item with more favorable secondary stats.

2. Tier 19 Set Bonuses

The 4-piece Tier 19 Set Bonus is very strong for Balance Druids, and you should try to obtain it as quickly as possible. Its value is increased further if you have the The Emerald Dreamcatcher Icon The Emerald Dreamcatcher legendary item.

3. Legendary Items

Legendary items have a high item level of 910, which makes them extremely strong. They are so strong, in fact, that a legendary item is always going to be worth equipping over any other item you might have in that slot.

However, there is a limitation on the number of legendary items you can have equipped at any one time (by default 1, but by now most players should be able to equip 2). Since some legendary items are better than others, if you have more items than the limit, you will have to choose which ones to equip.

Below, we will do our best to guide you through this process, as well as provide any other relevant information.

Of the legendaries available to Balance Druids, there are 3 in particular we should be looking out for. We list all legendaries below in order of standalone power.

  1. The Emerald Dreamcatcher Icon The Emerald Dreamcatcher: this is ranked first for a number of reasons. In a pure single target situation, it is the highest DPS increase by a significant margin, although it requires a slight shift in playstyle to accommodate (more on that on the rotation page). The enhanced single target damage gives Balance some of the most powerful priority target burst in the game; this significantly increases your usefulness in a progression raid. The nature of such a significant reduction in Starsurge Icon Starsurge's Astral Power cost will mean at some points of the fight, especially during Incarnation: Chosen of Elune Icon Incarnation: Chosen of Elune, you will overflow on either empowerment stacks or Astral Power. In these situations, you should choose to dump your Astral Power on Starsurge and "waste" empowerment charges, as Starsurge is by far your hardest-hitting ability. It is worth noting that this legendary also has the highest skill cap of the 3 good Balance Druid legendaries, and it makes the rotation feel slightly more rigid and unforgiving.
  2. Oneth's Intuition Icon Oneth's Intuition: this is another straightforward legendary. With such a large part of your damage budget being dedicated to DoTs, getting a free Starfall Icon Starfall while single-targeting is always welcome. Likewise, getting a free Starsurge Icon Starsurge after you have dumped a considerable amount of Astral Power to use Starfall is great to help focus down the important targets in the AoE. Each free spell can proc another free spell, so regardless of the situation this will always be a nice DPS increase when it happens. Stellar Flare Icon Stellar Flare becomes your preferred level 75 talent choice against 1-3 targets when you have this legendary item.
  3. Impeccable Fel Essence Icon Impeccable Fel Essence: this legendary is as straightforward as it sounds. With it, you will be able to use your powerful Celestial Alignment Icon Celestial Alignment/Incarnation: Chosen of Elune Icon Incarnation: Chosen of Elune roughly twice as often.
  4. Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish Icon Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish: this trinket is decent, helping with burst AoE DPS (which Balance Druids otherwise lack), but it is not an outstanding item.
  5. Cinidaria, the Symbiote Icon Cinidaria, the Symbiote: this is a strong option on fights with lots of adds, but an obviously lackluster option otherwise. It is a small DPS increase at best.
  6. Lady and the Child Icon Lady and the Child: like the above-mentioned legendary, this is an unimpressive item that only provides a small DPS increase.
  7. Sephuz's Secret Icon Sephuz's Secret: this is the weakest option for DPS, as the effect will quite often be unusable in most encounters.

While it is better to have one of the many offensive legendaries, we will eventually be able to use legendaries in multiple slots, so these items are worth mentioning. Their strengths are much more closely balanced than the offensive-based legendaries.

  1. Ekowraith, Creator of Worlds Icon Ekowraith, Creator of Worlds: this gives us an additional 5% flat damage reduction from Guardian Affinity Icon Guardian Affinity, which is nothing to scoff at.
  2. Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus Icon Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus: this is a strong self-shield, provided you have not taken damage in the last 5 seconds.
  3. Promise of Elune, the Moon Goddess Icon Promise of Elune, the Moon Goddess: this is the "weakest" defensive option, as it is more reactive than proactive.

4. Loot Competition

Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:

Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens Death Knights, Feral/Guardian/Restoration Druids, Mages, and Rogues
Leather Armor Demon Hunters, Feral/Guardian/Restoration Druids, Monks, and Rogues
  • Amulets
  • Cloaks
  • Rings
Trinkets Mages, Discipline and Shadow Priests, Elemental Shamans, and Warlocks
