Blizzard Accepting Applications for Game Balance Position

Blizzard are advertising a new job vacancy, the title is Game Designer, Balance.

As always with card games, balance is a big discussion point. Everyone has their own opinion, and many think they can do it better than the current design team. If you're one of those people, then this is your big chance. The position for an employee to work directly on balance issues is now open, and if you are interested you should fill in the official application form online.

The breakdown of role and requirements from the page linked above is as follows:

Blizzard LogoResponsibilities

Design awesome Hearthstone cards following the Hearthstone design principles.

Identify, iterate, and balance new and current cards that may have messy, confusing, overpowered, unclear, or un-fun designs.

Help develop card names, concepts, and flavor speech lines alongside a team of designers that encapsulate the lore and charm of the Warcraft universe.

Implement and adjust cards using simple scripting languages and welcoming the challenge of learning new skillsets to build upon existing designs.

Don your adventure cap and help design, build, and iterate on missions.

Note the laid back nature of the presentation of the information. Blizzard are big on community, and the informal nature of this, in my opinion, is a hint as to the kind of applicant they are looking for.

Blizzard LogoRequirements

Legendary status in Hearthstone

A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a game design role for video games or table-top games

Absolute passion for playing and making video games, especially with Blizzard Entertainment products and the Warcraft universe

A positive and self-driven attitude with the ability to be collaborative in a team environment

Must be detail oriented and analytical in a demanding technical environment

Excellent written and verbal communications skills

A passion for card games with experience designing cards for existing collectible card games

PLUSES

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Knowledge of the Warcraft lore

If anyone from Icy Veins applies, we wish you all the best of luck, and please, be as good as you think you are!

I should also make a witty comment, something like this would be fitting :

"Isn't it a little bit late to hire game designers? Like, 3 years late?"

Maybe we will get a 4 mana 7/7 for one of the best classes in the game, though I don't think Blizzard would do something this stupid. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I don't think they have a job like that at Blizzard sadly

IDK, I think you only need to ask. You could farm gold for them while locked in an office.

They want you to have a Bachelor Degree..... in what?!?! Oh yes, I have a Bachelor of Science in card game design..... smells like some BS to me.

Granted whoever gets the job, we need a Death Knight hero card class and I suppose monk and demon hunter too, but if you follow release progression, DK should be next!!!! So, if you get the job, make it happen.

Sadly, I think they stated this is never happening :(

There could be one set with a ton of cards for the new class (so all the classes have the same amount), and less neutral cards and cards for other classes. There should be enough cards for that, but I don't think it will be a reality.

Q. It seems that 9 is a very important number in Hearthstone, there are 9 Heroes, 9 deck slots. It makes sense for the Heroes, because it gives a 3x3 square for presenting them, but would it be conceivable to add another Hero at some point?

A. I think some members of the community have come up with designs for new Heroes, and we think that they are really cool ideas and they excite us. But the fact of the matter is that we already have 9 classes, and we feel there already is a ton of diversity and we frankly think that it has enough complexity right now for most people to sink their teeth into. So currently, we have no plans to add additional classes.

Looks like the dream is dead for real.

Dave Kosak introduces us to the Monster Hunt, which will be available in a week.
The Lead Mission Designer was joined by two of his associates to discuss the newest PvE mode, which will come along with The Witchwood. Paul Nguyen talked about the four heroes. Tess Greymane has a Hero Power that lets her Discover any class card that has been played in a game (by both players) and add it to your hand.
Darius Crowley has an indestructible cannon minion that can be activated via Darius' Hero Power and fire at the minions across it. Positioning will matter, as you can kill two enemy minions at once and the Hero Power will refresh each time you kill a minion with your cannon. There weren't any details on Houndmaster Shaw or Toki, Time-Tinker, but it was hinted that the former hero will have something to do with Rush (just like its card counterpart).
Giovanni Scarpati discussed bosses and treasures. The Monster Hunt will feature over 45 unique boss encounters. As Ben Brode had revealed in an earlier interview, each hero will have its own final boss, called "nemesis fight". For Crowley it's Lord Godfrey, for Shaw it's Glinda Crowskin and for Toki it's her own future self! When you clear the Monster Hunt with all four heroes (and win four packs), you get to face Hagatha as the last boss. Ultimately, as far as the treasures are concerned, there are a few returning ones from the Dungeon Run, but most are new. There are also hero exclusive treasures, as well as unique treasures "dropping" from rare boss encounters.
You should definitely watch the video to get a glimpse of all the new stuff coming with the Monster Hunt. And don't forget: it's release date is April 26 at 10:00 am PDT!

Start stocking up on vials of holy water and cannonballs, because The Witchwood’s free, single-player missions, the Monster Hunt, goes live on April 26 at 10:00 a.m. PDT!
Join Lead Mission Designer Dave Kosak, along with Mission Designers Paul Nguyen and Giovanni Scarpati, for a Hearthside Chat that will equip you with everything you need to know for a successful Monster Hunt!
      Ready for Action
If you played the Dungeon Run in Kobolds & Catacombs, the Monster Hunt will be eerily familiar—but much is different! Rather than choosing one of Hearthstone’s nine classes, you’ll take on the role of one of four veteran monster hunters, each with a special ability that you’ll need to make the most of if you hope to survive the hunt.
Your hunter will venture deep into the Witchwood on Hagatha’s trail, defeating a series of monstrous bosses who dare to cross your path. With each victory, you’ll build a stronger and stronger deck with the items you find. You may encounter some trusty old equipment out in the forest, but much of what you’ll find will be entirely new, including treasures unique to certain foes. Each monster hunter has their own favorite tricks—a special hero power or ability that you’ll need to master if you hope to survive the hunt. Each hunter also carries a grudge against a heinous nemesis in the woods: a unique boss that only they can track down to fight.

You’ll want to go on a Monster Hunt with every hunter, because each offers a quest that will earn you a Witchwood card pack. And if you’ve got the mettle to complete the Monster Hunt with all four hunters, you’ll finally have a chance to face off with the real witch in the woods: Hagatha! If you can free the wood from Hagatha’s curse, you’ll earn the gratitude of Gilneas and the Monster Hunter card back!

We hope you enjoyed learning more of what lurks ahead in Monster Hunt! We’re eager to hear your tales of The Witchwood on social media using the #Witchwood hashtag. Learn more about The Witchwood at TheWitchwood.com!
We’ll see you on the hunt!
