The riddle of the sfinx

Recommended Posts

Ok two variations of a similar question.

I suspect you will immediately know as soon as you see it as its an old one.

When is four half of five?

and

When is five half of four?

well, the first one is not so hard.

The roman numeral for 4 is IV.

IV is half of FIVE since FIVE has 4 letters and IV are two of them.

I am stuck on the second one though

Good Shine, as expected.

Your turn.

As a clue, some may argue five is two thirds of four but I will stick with half.

I'm still lost on that second part...

I'm going to post the next one anyhow.

This riddle is quite the thinker imo.

imagine a lamp.

with a switch

the lamp is on

the lamp is turned off

after half an hour, the lamp is turned on

after 15 minutes (1/4 hour) it is turned off again

after 7.5 minutes (1/8 hour) it is turned back on

this goes on and on and every switch occurs after exactly half the time the switch before it occurred.

After 1 hour, will the lamp be on or off?

hmm little stumped here.

Using a geometric series sum, this only converges to 1 hour of time once the number of times the light has been turned off and/or on tends to infinity.

So is infinity odd or even ... well its a concept so that makes this an inconclusive approach.

Is it something silly like you would break the switch turning it on and off before we reached one hour and thus the light would be off since the circuit would be broken?

the only answer i can think of using counting is the lamp would be on with 7.5 mintues to spare before it is turned off

lol, the easier answer is simply that noone will ever know if the light will be on or off after one minute. This is a very fun paradox which works in reality aswell as in theory.

Maybe people have heard of Achilles and the race with the tortoise.?

well, Xinto. I'll hand it to you ^^

well, this is obviously not right ^^

the lamp is on with 7,5 minutes to spare, but after 3.75 minutes it goes off again, then after 1.875 minutes it will go on, then after 0.9375 minutes it goes off again etc. etc.

the point of this riddle is to show that nearing something is not actually getting there.

Say we hold a race, and you give me a 10m head start.

when you have crossed that 10 meters, I will have progressed 5 meters, so now I'm 15 meters far into the race, and you are 10 meters into it.

now while you are crossing the 5 meters I am ahead of you, I will have gone 2.5 meters further. so now you're on 15 and I'm on 17.5

well I can tell you that in this theory, you cannot ever catch up to me, only get closer and closer and closer untill the difference is very much neglectable.

in theory you can only come closer and closer, in real life this is ofc not true (this is because we have to calculate multiple other factors aswell.

I guess this was a bit of a mean one, since there really is no answer to it.

Xinto, I'm very excited.

To answer the other half of my last one.

When is five half of four?    I will just write,, V and IV ... that should help. You will also see why some may argue five is two thirds of four.

What goes up the chimney down, but can't go down the chimney up?

In fear this is too simple.

When one does not know what it is, then it is something; but when one knows what it is, then it is nothing.

So first to answer either.

Oh now I get it, five is half of four sinc V is half of IV... I was thinking in the lines of the other one where you only transfer one number to roman numerals...

the chimney thing is an umbrella.

and the something/nothing thing is a secret (a lie is also a viable option.)

Yep ...

and a secret is close enough. A riddle was the answer though. Secret is viable.

"At first I was afraid, I was petrified.  Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side..."

Im gonna try something a little different.  Guess the song by the re-worded lyrics....

Maternal caregiver recently eradicated the life of an adult male. Situated a high velocity firearm juxtaposed the cranium of said male, manipulated the activation switch and forthwith the male ceases to exist.

The answer is undefined.  We'll drop the reality of the switch taking time to turn to the new position, and the lamp fillament taking time to heat/cool and create the light/dark or on/off.  The question begins in the world as we know it ... with time.

Time Exists and defines and action.

In the middle of your question, you reduce time to infinitely slow ... time ends and the action is no longer defined.

Then you ask for a definition of the action without time existing.

The Answer is neither off or on ... the answer is undefined by your fallacious method of reasoning.

Sophocles used this type of paradigm destruction to try and convince people they could not know ... his example used a track and finish line scenario (I believe). Hence the term "sophisitry".

It can howerver be used constructively as was done by Newton.  If your answer concerns the dimension being destroyed, you may calculate the limit of the destruction.  Hence the sum of rectangle areas as the rectangles' width "appoaches" zero ... the birth of calculus.

As I divide a "number" by smaller and smaller "values", the "results" get larger and larger.  How big will the "result" be when when the "value" gets all the way down to zero?

That's right Draewind, I may not have put it in the words that you have but it boils down to the same, there is no answer to that one. I guess it was not really a good one for forums ^^

Ok, I like the idea Demyndra had, so I'm gonna do the same thing with a different song.

Try to guess the song by the reworded lyrics:

Would you kindly escort me towards a heavenly populated area, whereas the vegetation will have colors that suit them aswell as the female population being quite fine to behold. I ask you desperately to take me towards my humble abode.

I hope the grammar and stuff is right ^^

Paradise City by Guns 'n Roses

Take me down to the paradise city, where the grass is green and the girls are pretty.  Oh won't you please take me home?

PS Your grammar was perfectly fine :)

Hmm... yeah I guess it's a little tricky...here's a hint to the artist:

It's a very popular female artist, however the song is not her most recent, but was widely popular.
