When Is the Shadowlands Pre-patch Release Date?

Recommended Posts

Update: some new factors have come up related to the below discussion, as the reputation buff might affect the dates, as you can read here.

Now that we know the exact time that Shadowlands will become available to all the ravenous players waiting for it, and also found out the Season 1 raid, M+ and PvP release timings, there's only one question remaining concerning the new expansion and time. When exactly will we see the pre-patch drop? We even already know everything that's coming in the pre-patch, including the level squish, class changes, new character customization, leveling experience, etc.

Blizzard have already talked about the Shadowlands pre-patch coming "a few weeks" before the expansion in one of the many interviews after the most recent stream event, but that's a little too vague for our liking. As we now know that Shadowlands will arrive on October 26th/27th, we can use that in addition to some other information we have available such as:

  • The pre-expansion event on the PTR has multiple weeks' worth of content, with 2 having been tested so far, but it's very likely there's more.
  • The BfA legendary cloak corruption resistance cap arrives on September 8th. As it would be somewhat crazy to get the maximum resistance on the cloak and then not be able to use it for any significant amount of time (since Corruptions are going away with the pre-patch), we can assume that we'll most likely get 2 weeks or more with the maximum resistance.
  • The Shadowlands Afterlives shorts end on September 17th with the Revendreth one.
  • Previous expansions have fluctuated in terms of pre-patch to expansion release, as we've had ones that last around 2 weeks or even less, but the majority and all of the more recent ones have been around the one month mark.

All of this combined puts the pre-patch at one of two dates:

  • September 22nd or September 29th (for the US, and a day after those two for the EU)

Both dates seem likely, with the 22nd coming out 35 days ahead of Shadowlands, and the 29th then taking us down to to 28 days. For comparison, Battle for Azeroth took 28 days to go from pre-patch to expansion launch, Legion took quite a bit longer at 42 and Warlords of Draenor came in at exactly 30 days.

Both dates seem likely, but if we had to pick one it'd be the earlier, September 22nd date. This would come directly after the final Afterlives short with the maximum amount of hype and excitement ready to flow into the pre-patch and then carry over into Shadowlands. This would also give Blizzard more time with the leveling and class changes in particular on a grander scale than the beta and PTR, so they might iron out a few more issues before launch. We should know more this Tuesday, as we generally get a 2 week warning for events like this, and if the pre-pach comes early, on the 15th as some think, we should find out about it next week.

Hopefully both the pre-patch and Shadowlands release dates don't end up being too early, and the opening experience of WoW's latest expansion will be a great one for everyone!

Your numbers are off here. The 22nd would be 35 days before, and the 29th would be 28 days before, October 27.

Yep, edited. Not sure where I went wrong, but fixed now. Doesn't really impact the the overall assessment though, but thanks for pointing it out!

Tama's Dragonflight Helper is a Weakaura that displays a weekly to-do list in the game and it's been updated for Dragonflight Season 4!
The WeakAura is very useful for keeping track of everything in the game at max level. It shows you a to-do list with the weekly tasks, provides you with the locations of rares, super rares, information about your current Renown standing, and more.

You will find Tama's Dragonflight Helper at wago.io. Please note that you must first download and install WeakAuras 2 to import the string.

Cataclysm's Grim Batol has been added to the Mythic+ Dungeon rotation in The War Within Season 1, and one boss received a brand new model recently on the Alpha.
General Umbriss, the first boss of the dungeon, got a shiny new model, which is quite different from his previous one. Below is a screenshot of the old a new model.

Blizzard have clarified why players are able to get a full Spark of Awakening through the two available Splinters in the first week of Dragonflight Season 4, and it seems it's only for this week and only due to catch-up rules being enabled!
      Splintered Spark (Source)
Just want to confirm this with some details.
Everyone essentially started Season 4 in catch-up mode. Players were able to get 1 Splintered Spark of Awakening from the weekly quest, whether that’s the weekly “Last Hurrah” quest or the PvP weeklies offered by Malicia.
And then you’re able to get another splinter / half-spark from any valid catch-up sources, such as Mythic+, Awakened Raids, and PvP wins.
Next week and thereafter, only one Splintered Spark is obtainable every week. And like Seasons 2 and 3, with the increasing cap on Splintered Sparks per week, and if you ever fall behind you will be able to get Splintered Sparks from any catch-up source.

It seems there may be an easier way to obtain the Tusks of Mannoroth appearance during the Mists of Pandaria Remix event!
The tusks are one of the rarest transmogs in the game currently, even with the recently added Siege of Orgrimmar skip, as their drop rates are VERY low (0.1-0.3%, reportedly). As spotted by MrGM, the new Tusks of Mannoroth are a cosmetic appearance item added in the new limited time event. Now, some have suggested they may just be purchasable from the Bronze vendor (the currency that will drop off of pretty much anything in the event), making them pretty easy to get, but it seems there might be a different way to get them.
It's unclear whether the cosmetic will actually be purchasable or if it will drop somewhere else, but another interesting Mannoroth-related item was added as well, the Bones of Mannoroth, which may be related to the cosmetic.

As you can see the bones are a stackable resource you gain from killing Garrosh, and it's looking like they're a way to guarantee the Tusk appearance with enough kills! Just how many drop is unclear, but assuming you need all 20 for the appearance and that Normal drops 1, Heroic 2 and Mythic 3 bones, it may take at least 7 weeks to get them. Now the number required might be/is likely to be lower than the 20  stack maximum, and we may get more bones per kill.
But even at 7 weeks it's much, much easier to get than the current "hope for 0.3%" in retail, so it's still a pretty good deal! This may or may not upset players that farmed for the tusks for a long time the regular way, but there's a whole lot players that will be thrilled!
The Remix: Mists of Pandaria event starts on May 16th and should last until August 19th.
