What is Currency Wars?
Currency Wars is a permanent game mode in Honkai: Star Rail that will feature teams of 8-10 characters where 4 characters at a time are placed in "combat mode" to defeat enemies. Characters inside of Currency Wars feature new abilities and passives called "bonds". To find out more about these changes and how the mechanics of Currency Wars work check out this page for more information!
Currency Wars takes turns in rounds where you encounter different enemies as well as bosses across 3 planes. As you partake in each plane, use this time to collect valuable resources to enhance your team before the final boss. During these rounds you will come across varied "Investment Environments" and "Investment Strategies" which provide strong buffs to the team. Selecting the correct Environment and Strategy will decide how easy it will be to clear.
A great advantage when taking part in Currency Wars is earning Ascension Points which increases your ascension level. As you increase your ascension level you will obtain various rewards such as Stellar Jades, Self-Modelling Resin, Variable Dice and other exciting rewards.
What Expansions are Available in Currency Wars?
The first major expansion for Currency Wars is Currency Wars: Zero-Sum Game. Three new characters The Dahlia, Yao Guang, and Sparxie join the game and a new Expert Advisor system is introduced, giving select characters special roles and unique playstyles.
The update raises the Ascension Level cap to 110, expands Expected Profit and Bond Links with additional rewards, and increases the maximum Rank difficulty to A8 Wealth Creator 30. Numerous Bonds and characters have also been rebalanced, with adjustments to costs, positioning, and abilities.
In addition, the expansion adds new Investment Environments, Investment Strategies and opponent factions, significantly broadening gameplay variety and strategic depth.
What are Bonds in Currency Wars?
There are a number of different types of bonds that each have unique abilities allowing strong effects to take place during combat. See below each of these Bonds and their effects:
See below the Faction Bonds:
- Xianzhou - "Lightning-Lord: Attacks all enemies when taking action. A "Xianzhou" member taking action increases its attack instances and advances its action."
- Wolf Hunt - "Borisin: After participating in battle, gains 4 experience. For each piece of basic equipment an ally squad member carries, the Borsin gains 1 bonus experience after battle. When Borisin gains enough EXP, it will level up, dealing more DMG and providing buffs. Advanced equipment and privileged equipment are considered as 2 pieces of basic equipment each."
- Night Demigod - "Crystal Ore can be opened to obtain Gold Coins, characters, equipments or other rare items"
- Day Demigod - "Obtain exclusive Day Equipment for Day Demigod team members. increases On-Field/ Off-Field Strength and SPD amplification."
- Belobog - "Engine of Creation: Charges after a Belobog team member takes action. When fully charged, consumes a portion of Energy to deal massive Fire DMG to all enemies, and the Belobog character who dealt the most DMG in combat immediately takes action."
- Express Cohort - "Summons Astral Express to smash enemies and leave Light Rail on the field, increasing ally squads On/Off-Field strength."
- Cosmic Scholar - "Cake Cat: Increases Cosmic Scholar squad members and at the start of the on-field ally turn, restore HP. Cake Cat stacks increase the healing multiplier. Increases on-field allies DMG mitigation."
- Galactic Voyager - "Boost specific stats for your squad, increasing with more galactic voyager characters on the field. Galactic Voyager team members receive double stat boost."
- The Planet of Festivities - "Select a Planet of Festivities character as the Giant Star to grant unique bonuses to the ally squad."
- Stellaron Hunters - "The Stellaron Hunter with the most equipment becomes the Star Hunter, and Stellaron Hunters will assist the Star Hunter in battle. Increases the DMG Amplification and HP Amplification of Stellaron Hunters."
- Galaxy Ranger - "Galaxy Rangers gain DMG Amplification and SPD Amplification. When Galaxy Rangers are placed Off-Field the star rating of the off-field Galaxy Rangers grants additional DMG and SPD to on-field Galaxy Rangers."
- IPC - "Increases the OFF field Strength and Shield Strength of IPC team members."
Each character has their own Bond and when a number of characters with the same type of Bond are in the same team, the effect will take place enabling buffs. More team members with the corresponding Bond will increase the Bond level, therefore making it's effect stronger.
Character use in Currency Wars
The great thing about the Currency Wars game mode is that it allows you to trial any characters including those that you do not own and see how they work in different teams and experience how different abilities work. For characters that you own the progress data will carry over but those that you do not own will not.
Recruit Staff is where you spent Gold Coins to recruit characters into your teams up to a maximum of 10 characters to take part in combat. Each character has their own positioning such as 'on field' and 'off field'. On field relates to those to take part directly in combat whereas off field refers to those that have passive abilities which occur during the combat stages. Placing each character on their related field will activate any relevant unqiue abilities such as enhancing existing skills or providing new combat abilities.
Characters can also equip different types of gear which will provide additional stats as well as additional effects when in combat. Selecting the correct gear for different characters will greatly increase their abilities when in combat!
Each character has their own rarity with it's unique system costing different amounts of coins in order to recruit them. These colours and costs are as follows: Grey (1 coin), Green (2 Coin), Blue (3 Coin), Purple (4 Coin) and Gold (5 Coin). In addition to these rarity colours there is a rarity mechanic. An example of this is as more of the same characters are recruited into your team the rarity of the future purchased characters improves as well as their base kit. An example is having a 2-star Green character with an increased base kit could be better than a Purple 3-star character.
Gold Rarity Characters (5-Cost)
Purple Rarity Characters (4-Cost)
Blue Rarity Characters (3-Cost)
Green Rarity Characters (2-Cost)
Grey Rarity Characters (1-Cost)
In terms of a starting base kit Grey characters have a weaker kit whereas Gold characters have the strongest base kit. On the flip side of this the Grey characters have a higher development potential and Gold characters have less potential for development. One thing to note is that Gold characters cannot be recruited straight away and a level increase is needed first before higher level characters can be unlocked.
What is the Expert Advisor Expansion?
The 4.0 update introduces a new Expert Advisor system. These characters cannot be recruited from the store at the start of a run but can be unlocked through certain Investment Environments, Investment Strategies or by using Expert Invitations.
Once unlocked, Expert Advisors function like regular crew members for that run. They can be purchased in the store, upgraded, equipped with gear and will keep their existing Bonds. Each one is tied to a unique Investment Environment or Strategy that adds special gameplay effects, creating new strategic possibilities.
Following Version 4.0, Gallagher, Tingyun, and Qingque will take on the Expert Advisor role. For example, the Prismatic Investment strategy "Jade Expert: Qingque" grants players an Expert Advisor Qingque with three random Emblems and makes her available in the store for that session.
What is the Strategy Compendium?
The Strategy Compendium allows you to open up a help page during a match to get recommendations about the characters you have on the field areas. Once you have chosen a strategy that suits you this will highlight any characters in the store that are recommended for you to use. In addition to highlighting recommended characters it can also help you to select equipment that’s best to help enhance your characters further increasing your chances in battle.
