Brawler's Guild: Dark Summoner (Rank 7) (MoP 5.4)


Dark Summoner is your second Brawler's Guild Rank 7 opponent. The fight against him will require you to quickly dispose of the ghosts he spawns. Doing so makes the boss vulnerable to damag. Ranged classes have a distinct advantage, since the ghosts melee for a very high amount of damage. Before we delve further into the explanations, we advise you to first watch this very short video, which shows how the fight with Dark Summoner goes.

1. Abilities and Strategy↑top

Dark Summoner has only one ability, called Shadow Bolt Icon Shadowbolt, which deals about 80K Shadow damage to you, and can be interrupted. He also has a rather strong melee attack.

Dark Summoner is immune to all damage by default. Roughly every 12 seconds, the boss creates a ghost in a random location of the arena. Killing a ghost suppresses the boss' immunity for 18 seconds.

These ghosts have no abilities, but their melee attack will one-shot you. They are susceptible to stuns, and they move very slowly. There is a beam of light that shines in front of your character (much like a flashlight). Aiming this at a ghost will stun it for a few seconds, which should give you enough time to kill it before it has a chance to melee you.

Taking this into account, the strategy should be as follows.

  1. Whenever a ghost spawns, kill it quickly and then focus on burning the boss while he is vulnerable.
  2. Whenever possible, interrupt Shadowbolt, and also use any damage mitigation cooldowns that you may have.

  • Do not panic. It does not matter if you mess up your rotation, but you need to stick to the strategy.
  • If you are in for a long Brawler's Guild session, you may want to use a flask.
  • Prepot! Use a Potion of Brawler's Might Icon Potion of Brawler's Might, a Potion of Brawler's Cunning Icon Potion of Brawler's Cunning, or a Potion of Brawler's Deftness Icon Potion of Brawler's Deftness right before Dark Summoner appears, depending on what your main statistic is.
  • When the 60-second cooldown on your potion is over, you can use the same potion again or you can use a Brawler's Healing Potion Icon Brawler's Healing Potion if you need healing.
  • Group up with other players so that you benefit from each other's buffs.

4. Classes We Did The Fight With↑top

4.1. Death Knight

To deal with Dark Summoner, we advise you to make use of the following Death Knight-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • Use Lichborne Icon Lichborne as your tier 2 talent, since it is the only talent in this tier that will provide you some actual usage during the fight against Dark Summoner. Simply treat Lichborne as a self-healing cooldown, which can be used to extend your survival in the arena by a few seconds.
  • Use Death Pact Icon Death Pact as your tier 4 talent, because the fight against Dark Summoner is short enough that you can make full use of the heal; your ghoul will still be alive when you need the healing from Death Pact.
  • Use Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell creatively, to mitigate large amounts of magic damage.
  • Make sure to interrupt spell casts through Mind Freeze Icon Mind Freeze and Strangulate Icon Strangulate (or Asphyxiate Icon Asphyxiate, if you have taken that talent).
  • The fight against Dark Summoner is made considerably easier if you use the full combination of offensive cooldowns at the start.

As a Death Knight, this fight should not pose any particular challenges. If you play as Frost (which we recommend), using Howling Blast Icon Howling Blast allows you to finish off ghosts from range if you cannot stun them until they are dead.

You should interrupt as many spell casts as you can, and use Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell whenever available (make sure not to interrupt the spell casts while Anti-Magic Shell is up).

4.2. Hunter

To deal with Dark Summoner, we advise you to make use of the following Hunter-specific abilities/talents/glyphs.

  • As a tier 3 talent, we recommend Exhilaration Icon Exhilaration in this fight, since its burst and on-demand heal is excellent for the nature of the fight against Dark Summoner.
  • Tier 4, 5, and 6 talents should be the same as for any normal PvE raiding set-up.
  • Remember to make use of your extensive arsenal of offensive cooldowns during the fight. We detail these in the respective PvE guides (Beast Mastery / Marksmanship / Survival), and these guidelines hold true for the fight against Dark Summoner.
  • Your range of defensive cooldowns is extremely limited, with only Deterrence Icon Deterrence and Feign Death Icon Feign Death playing a relevant role. Note that if you Feign Death and your pet is not alive, the fight will stop and you will be teleported out of the arena.

To defeat Dark Summoner as a Hunter, simply DPS the ghosts from afar, and then DPS Dark Summoner when he is vulnerable.
