Talent Explanations for Frost Mages

This tab will go over some of the more important talents and certain talents that are notable to avoid at all costs. For a full list of descriptions, please see the Spell List page:

2.6.

Rows 1-4

There is not a lot of choice here. You should probably route towards Temporal Realignment Icon Temporal Realignment as a sustainability heal initially, and then whichever of the rest you feel most comfortable with. Inspired Intellect Icon Inspired Intellect being your DPS trait, and Ice Block Icon Ice Block + Winter's Protection Icon Winter's Protection being the defensive option.

Mirror Image Icon Mirror Image has a niche survivability potential for open world to distract mobs for a few seconds.

2.7.

Rows 5-7

This section has a lot of leeway in what you can do and what you could potentially take. Of this section, you want Tome of Antonidas Icon Tome of Antonidas Tome of Rhonin Icon Tome of Rhonin, and Overflowing Energy Icon Overflowing Energy by extension. These are the only true throughput talents in the section. Quick Witted Icon Quick Witted is the most useful option to get there.

The rest of the points can honestly be assigned as you see fit. Incantation of Swiftness Icon Incantation of Swiftness turns Greater Invisibility Icon Greater Invisibility into a 40% sprint button. This is going to be heavily personal preference, so take whatever you think feels right.

Dragon's Breath Icon Dragon's Breath and Supernova Icon Supernova are both great AoE stops, although Dragon's Breath is more reliable, as knock-up effects have been known to not actually stop a cast occasionally. However, when they do work, the knock will last longer, as the mob has to actually land. Play around with both and see which feels right.

2.8.

Rows 8-10

The optimal play is getting all three capstones. Getting to them is up to you. The standard play is to take both the left and right sides for the DPS stat talents, and then Energized Barriers Icon Energized Barriers to give you access to the center capstone talent.

3.

Frost Talents

3.1.

Rows 1-4

Mandatory talents everywhere! Take everything, you do not have spare nodes.

3.2.

Rows 5-7

Your primary target is Brain Freeze Icon Brain Freeze, then Ray of Frost Icon Ray of Frost.

Beyond those, it depends on if you are angling towards single target or AoE. Big components that are shared between them are Frozen Touch Icon Frozen Touch, Improved Shatter Icon Improved Shatter, Permafrost Lances Icon Permafrost Lances, Winter's Blessing Icon Winter's Blessing, and the Ray improvement node. Everything else ends up being a sliding scale of value, depending on how heavily you wish to lean into single target or AoE. The builds on the other tabs will inform your choices in most cases, but occasionally you might wish to mix and match a bit, especially for open world. Splitting Ice Icon Splitting Ice especially can be very useful for questing.

3.3.

Rows 8-10

Glacial Assault Icon Glacial Assault and Improved Flurry Icon Improved Flurry are mandatory.

Thermal Void Icon Thermal Void sees use in most builds, as it functionally doubles the damage per cast of an Ice Lance Icon Ice Lance, even in builds that do not cast it very often, such as Frostfire AoE.

The Lonely Winter Icon Lonely Winter and Summon Water Elemental Icon Summon Water Elemental choice node is strong, but in most cases the Water Elemental falls off on any form of multi-target.

Glaciate Icon Glaciate and Comet Storm Icon Comet Storm are functionally the split between Spellslinger and Frostfire.

4.

Apex Talent for Frost Mage: Hand of Frost

Hand of Frost Icon Hand of Frost causes any Shatter event to have a 10% chance to fire an extra spell that hits fairly hard, and adds 1 stack of Freezing to the target.

Hand of Frost Icon Hand of Frost takes that, and increases the proc chance based on how many stacks were consumed. Each time the damage spell procs, gain a 1% damage buff for a few seconds. This can stack, and each stack is timed individually, so they will rise and fall gradually as you play.

Hand of Frost Icon Hand of Frost procs 4 of the damage spells over the duration of Ray of Frost Icon Ray of Frost, buffs Ray's damage, and adds a second charge to the spell.

For the most part this is an entirely passive talent, but it is fairly strong. The flexibility of having a second charge on Ray of Frost Icon Ray of Frost allows us to pool a charge for important things, such as trinket procs or vulnerability phases.

5.

Hero Talents

5.1.

Frostfire

Frostfire is slightly burstier, and all of its damage is fairly front loaded. Generally speaking it is better suited to outdoor content, or content that dies quickly.

On the AoE side, having access to Meteor Icon Meteor, with an increased damage to both it and Comet Storm Icon Comet Storm, and the exploding Glacial Spike Icon Glacial Spike, it excels at burst AoE.

5.2.

Spellslinger

Spellslinger in comparison is more about more rapid, smaller hits from Splinters.

Spellslinger remains the only way to reduce the cooldown of Frozen Orb Icon Frozen Orb through Spellfrost Teachings Icon Spellfrost Teachings, giving it a nice niche of more frequent Orb casts. It trades this for not really being able to spec for Comet Storm Icon Comet Storm, and losing the burst possible from that talent.

6.

Mythic+

More information about M+'s talent tree can be found on the M+ page.

7.

Frost Mage PvP Talents

If you opt into War Mode, you are given the ability to use the Honour Talents out in the world. Defensive talents will depend on how comfortable you are with your base kit and if you expect to get attacked by other players. Given that PvP is outside the scope of this guide, only the offensive talents will be listed here. The PvP guide itself can be found here:

  • Concentrated Coolness Icon Concentrated Coolness is pretty great with no downsides.
  • Frost Bomb Icon Frost Bomb is a great choice. A nice delayed burst AoE hit.
  • Snowdrift Icon Snowdrift works as a decent short-term stun, but the damage is underwhelming and requires targets to be extremely close to you. There are better options.

Ice Wall Icon Ice Wall is going to get a special mention. Having the ability to force line of sight or wall an enemy player, either in with you or away from you, is a pretty powerful utility. This feels like one of those things you should have with you just in case you are in War Mode. It is deceptively strong for the area denial utility.

There are some interesting Honour Talents, but since they are restricted to the open-world and unusable in instances, they generally are not simulated. Thus, the above are simply the thoughts and feelings of the author.
