General Information

This page is a gear reference for Retribution Paladins. It lists your best items and Legendaries, gives you gearing advice, and shows you how you will be competing for loot with other classes.

The other pages of our Retribution Paladin guide can be accessed from the table of contents on the right.

About Our Reviewers

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Fardion, a top Retribution Paladin. You can follow him on Twitter, and you can also reach him on the official Paladin Discord channel if you have any questions about the spec.

1. Best in Slot List

Given the shifting stat priorities for Retribution Paladins, it is not possible for us to provide a best in slot list. Instead, we highly recommend that you use Simcraft to get personalised stat weights for your character, and to help you find out what gear is best for you. This guide will help you get through the process.

For your trinket slots, none of the trinkets from The Emerald Nightmare (aside from Swarming Plaguehive Icon Swarming Plaguehive) are worth choosing over trinkets from (Mythic+) dungeons. The best trinkets for you are, in order:

  1. Faulty Countermeasure Icon Faulty Countermeasure
  2. Swarming Plaguehive Icon Swarming Plaguehive
  3. Eye of Command Icon Eye of Command
  4. Unstable Arcanocrystal Icon Unstable Arcanocrystal
  5. Darkmoon Deck: Dominion Icon Darkmoon Deck: Dominion
  6. Memento of Angerboda Icon Memento of Angerboda
  7. Chaos Talisman Icon Chaos Talisman
  8. Hunger of the Pack Icon Hunger of the Pack
  9. Aran's Relaxing Ruby Icon Aran's Relaxing Ruby

Other good trinkets are Infernal Alchemist Stone Icon Infernal Alchemist Stone, Terrorbound Nexus Icon Terrorbound Nexus, Horn of Valor Icon Horn of Valor, and Chrono Shard Icon Chrono Shard.

A notable mention as far as non-trinket slots are concerned is the Chestplate of Impenetrable Darkness Icon Chestplate of Impenetrable Darkness chest from Nightbane in Return to Karazhan. This chest buffs the effect of trinkets from Return to Karazhan by 30%, making it a considerably DPS boost should you be using such trinkets. If you have the chest, then the Eye of Command Icon Eye of Command is the best trinket to use with it.

These trinket recommendations were provided by Mserrano, a Retribution theorycrafter on the Retribution Paladin Discord.

2. Legendary Items

Legendary items have a high item level of 895, which makes them extremely strong. They are so strong, in fact, that a legendary item is always going to be worth equipping over any other item you might have in that slot.

However, there is a limitation on the number of legendary items you can have equipped at any one time (by default 1, but by now most players should be able to equip 2). Since some legendary items are better than others, if you have more items than the limit, you will have to choose which ones to equip.

Below, we will do our best to guide you through this process, as well as provide any other relevant information.

The top 4 best legendary items to use, in order, are:

  1. Whisper of the Nathrezim Icon Whisper of the Nathrezim (if using the Crusade Icon Crusade talent)
  2. Liadrin's Fury Unleashed Icon Liadrin's Fury Unleashed (if using the Crusade Icon Crusade talent)
  3. Aggramar's Stride Icon Aggramar's Stride
  4. Aegisjalmur, the Armguards of Awe Icon Aegisjalmur, the Armguards of Awe

The other considerably worse, and if you have to choose between one of them, simply choose based on personal preference.

3. Loot Competition

Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:

Item Type Competing Classes
Tier Tokens Demon Hunters, Holy/Protection Paladins, Priests, and Warlocks
Plate Armor Death Knights, Holy/Protection Paladins, and Warriors
  • Amulets
  • Cloaks
  • Rings
Trinkets Frost/Unholy Death Knights and Arms/Fury Warriors
