Shadow Priest DPS Stat Priority — 12.1

Last Updated: Aug 10, 2026 - 7:20 PM (8d ago)

On this page, you will find out the optimal stat priority for your Shadow Priest. We first present the stat priority, before delving into more complex explanations on how the stats interact with your specialization and gameplay. Our content is updated for World of Warcraft Patch 12.1.

1.

Shadow Priest Stat Priority

As a Shadow Priest, your Hero Talent choice and the type of encounter you are playing both affect how strongly you should value your secondary stats. In general, Haste and Mastery are your most important secondary stats, with Critical Strike and Versatility taking a back seat. The exact balance between Haste and Mastery shifts depending on your Hero Talent and whether you are playing single-target or multi-target content.

Item Level
Haste
Mastery
Critical Strike
Versatility

The broad priority above is a simple summary. The sections below give the more specific guidance you should use when choosing gear for a particular playstyle.

If you want to optimize for multiple types of content, it is worth maintaining two gear sets: one for Voidweaver and one for Archon. Voidweaver generally favors Haste over Mastery, while Archon performs best when Haste and Mastery stay closer together.

1.1.

Single-Target Stat Priority

These are the practical stat targets for single-target encounters. The rating ranges are approximate goals rather than strict minimums or maximums. They represent stat distributions that have performed well in simulations while helping you avoid over-stacking a stat and falling into excessive diminishing returns.

1.1.1.

Archon

  1. Intellect
  2. Mastery (1200 - 1400 Rating)
  3. Critical Strike (800 - 1200 Rating)
  4. Haste (1400 - 1600 Rating)
  5. Versatility (400 Rating or Below)
1.1.2.

Voidweaver

  1. Intellect
  2. Mastery (1200 - 1400 Rating)
  3. Haste (1400 - 1800 Rating)
  4. Critical Strike (800 - 1200 Rating)
  5. Versatility (400 Rating or Below)
1.2.

Multi-Target Stat Priority

These are the practical stat targets for AoE and Mythic+ style content. The ranges below are rough goals for an un-buffed character in a Mythic+ environment, not hard caps, and they are meant to help you stay close to the recommended balance without over-investing in a single stat.

1.2.1.

Archon

  1. Intellect
  2. Mastery (1000 - 1200 Rating)
  3. Haste (1600 - 1800 Rating)
  4. Critical Strike (800 - 1200 Rating)
  5. Versatility (400 Rating or below)
1.2.2.

Voidweaver

  1. Intellect
  2. Haste (1600 - 1800 Rating)
  3. Mastery (1000 - 1200 Rating)
  4. Critical Strike (800 - 1200 Rating)
  5. Versatility (400 Rating or Below)

In-Depth Stat Breakdown

Intellect is your primary stat. You should look for this stat in all of your upgrades. It provides you with Spell Power, which increases the damage of your spells.

Critical Strike increases your chance to critically hit with all spells and abilities. Crits deal double damage by default, but several effects can increase your crit damage, and make crits even stronger.

Haste increases your spell-casting speed and the tick rate of your periodic effects.

FAQIs There a Haste Cap for Shadow Priest?
No, there is no hard Haste cap for Shadow Priest. You do not need to stop at a specific amount of Haste, Critical Strike, Mastery, or Versatility for the spec to function. That said, once you reach roughly 30% Haste, Critical Strike, or Versatility, those stats begin to lose value through diminishing returns. Mastery begins to do this around 19%.

Mastery (Mastery: Shadow Weaving Icon Mastery: Shadow Weaving) increases the damage of your spells for each damage over time effect you have active on that target. This only works with Shadow Word: Pain Icon Shadow Word: Pain, Vampiric Touch Icon Vampiric Touch, and Shadow Word: Madness Icon Shadow Word: Madness. While Voidform Icon Voidform is active, you get the benefit on every target as if they had all three dots active.

Versatility increases all your damage and healing done, and decreases all damage taken.

2.1.

Diminishing Returns on Stats

Every stat has a limit where they will begin to offer less increase per point gained, which are known as the points of diminishing return. Once you have reached these amounts, stats will become progressively less valuable and may fall behind other options. The current breakpoints are:

Stat 10% DR Rating 20% DR Rating 30% DR Rating
Mastery 1380 1840 2300
Critical Strike 1380 1840 2300
Haste 1320 1760 2200
Versatility 1620 2160 2700
