On this page, you will find out the best talents for each tier for your Unholy Death Knight in World of Warcraft — The War Within (11.2). We also have default talent lists for various types of content, such as raiding or Mythic+. If you play with Warmode on, we have your PvP talents covered as well.

Note that these builds are generic recommendations for various content. For more specific recommendations for Mythic+, check out the dedicated page below.

3.

Best Raid San'Layn Talents for Unholy Death Knight

This build focuses on the San'layn Hero-Talents to optimise its Single Target DPS. It is generally slightly behind Rider of the Apocalypse. It does do really well in cleave as Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil synergises really well with the high Death Coil Icon Death Coil damage.

Your primary choice in the spec tree revolves around Superstrain Icon Superstrain and Commander of the Dead Icon Commander of the Dead. You can opt to pick up Superstrain Icon Superstrain for a 4% Single Target loss but a nice increase in DoT power. Furtermore, Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil is super good in cleave due to your high Death Coil Icon Death Coil damage. Replace Ghoulish Frenzy Icon Ghoulish Frenzy whenever you need to gain that cleave value. It is a 0.5% Single Target loss for a significant cleave gain.

For even more burst AoE, Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus is a great option. This costs you around 3% Single Target DPS but brings a lot of burst cleave and AoE with your Cooldowns. Furthermore, you can swap Raise Abomination Icon Raise Abomination for Legion of Souls Icon Legion of Souls. You lose 10% Single Target but gain a big amount of AoE burst.

Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!

3.

Best Rider Raid Talents for Unholy Death Knight

This build is your best Single Target build used for most encounters. It is ahead of San'layn by around 7% and is also more flexible with both Clawing Shadows Icon Clawing Shadows and Death Charge Icon Death Charge!

If you want to gain some cleave, swapping All Will Serve Icon All Will Serve for Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil gains you around 10% damage on 2-target cleave while you lose around 2% Single Target DPS. If you want even more cleave, Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus brings a lot of burst AoE and costs 3% Single Target DPS. Your second talent point to swap would be Death Rot Icon Death Rot which is another 2% DPS Single Target

3.

Mythic+ San'Layn Talents for Unholy Death Knight

San'Layn in Mythic+ provides great cleave with Death Coil Icon Death Coil as well as solid AoE with our quadratic scaling on Blood Beast Icon Blood Beast. It lacks some mobility but overall is a competitive build. It does lose quite a lot of Single Target compared to the best setup, 20% or so in 3 minute fight.

You can opt to run a more disease-focused build with Plague Mastery Icon Plague Mastery instead of Grave Mastery Icon Grave Mastery as well as the Superstrain Icon Superstrain path instead of Commander of the Dead Icon Commander of the Dead. You then get the freedom of allocating both Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus and Magus of the Dead Icon Magus of the Dead to other talents. Rotten Touch Icon Rotten Touch, Coil of Devastation Icon Coil of Devastation and Desecrate Icon Desecrate are all solid options.

Furthermore, if you want to focus on more big AoE, you can drop Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil for Ghoulish Frenzy Icon Ghoulish Frenzy. However, the loss of cleave is generally not worth it.

Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!

3.

Mythic+ Rider Talents for Unholy Death Knight

Rider of the Apocalypse in Mythic+ brings a minion-heavy damage profile that relies on Menacing Magus Icon Menacing Magus to deal high AoE damage (as well as Bursting Sores Icon Bursting Sores, Epidemic Icon Epidemic and Diseases...). It bursts quickly without much setup and does well on Single Target, only losing 8% damage compared to the BiS Single Target setup!

There are not many choices within the spec tree for this build. Desecrate Icon Desecrate is an option instead of Death Rot Icon Death Rot, proving nice utility when you tank moves out of your Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay, as well as a shorter Death and Decay Cooldown. It

3.

Mythic+ isease Rider Talents for Unholy Death Knight

The recommended Mythic+ build runs Commander of the Dead Icon Commander of the Dead. However, going down the Disease path to Superstrain Icon Superstrain is similar in terms of overall DPS. It does focus a bit more on AoE, losing about 5% in Single Target DPS over the Commander build.

Be sure to make use of the 'Copy Export String' button to import the best build directly into your game!

3.

Leveling Talents for Unholy Death Knight

When leveling, we prioritise slightly differently compared to our other builds. We want direct up-front damage without any setup, as well as good multi-dot capabilities. Furthermore, mobility matters a lot, which is why we want to pick up On a Paler Horse Icon On a Paler Horse!

3.

Delves Build for Unholy Death Knight

Delves generally does not have the same fight length as Mythic+ content. We, therefore, we recommend a build which requires less setup to start dealing damage! The Mythic+ Rider of the Apocalypse build is great for this.

2.1.

Hero Talents

2.1.1.

Rider of the Apocalypse

The Rider of the Apocalypse Hero Talents focus on minion damage, summoning Horsemen to deal heavy damage to your enemies. You have minor rotational updates with Trollbane's Chains of Ice, where you want to burst them ASAP and you want to stay in Mograine's Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay to get 5% damage boost. Otherwise, the main benefit comes from Death Charge Icon Death Charge which is an amazing mobility ability for Death Knights!

2.1.2.

San'Layn

The San'layn Hero Talents focus heavily on DoT and Death Coil Icon Death Coil damage. Furthermore, your rotation is completely different in Dark Transformation Icon Dark Transformation windows where you drop Festering Strike Icon Festering Strike and Soul Reaper Icon Soul Reaper entirely. Its strength lies in two-target cleave where the Death Coil Icon Death Coil damage boost from Frenzied Bloodthirst Icon Frenzied Bloodthirst in conjunction with Improved Death Coil Icon Improved Death Coil works really well.

2.2.

Rotation

Talents can and usually do change your rotation or add new abilities to your priority. For a more detailed breakdown of how your rotation will look with optimal talents, check out our rotation page, which is linked below.

3.

PvP Talents (War Mode)

In this section, we will rank the PvP talents that are best for leveling and doing open-world content.

  • PvP talents enabled in the outdoor world.
  • 10% increase in World Quest rewards at maximum level.
  • 10% more experience gained while leveling.
  • Earn Conquest Points, which can reward gear every week.

With the benefits of enabling War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is recommended enabling the feature to maximize your leveling and rewards at maximum level. However, you will make yourself available for open-world PvP, and the possibility of being "ganked" while leveling or doing World Quests exists.

3.1.

Unholy Death Knight War Mode Talents

  1. Doomburst Icon Doomburst causes your Death Coil Icon Death Coils that consume Sudden Doom Icon Sudden Doom to burst up to two Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds on the target, slowing them by 45% per wound burst for 3 seconds. Solid DPS gain in PvE.
  2. Bloodforged Armor Icon Bloodforged Armor provides 3 seconds of 20% physical damage reduction whenever you press Death Strike Icon Death Strike. Solid defensive gain!
  3. Spellwarden Icon Spellwarden lowers the cooldown of Anti-Magic Shell Icon Anti-Magic Shell by 10 seconds and allows you to use it on allies. It's just a nice defensive gain because it allows more AMS usage.
  4. Reanimation Icon Reanimation reanimates a nearby corpse, summoning a zombie with 5 health for 20 seconds, which slowly moves towards the target. If it reaches your target, it explodes, stunning all enemies within 6 yards for 3 seconds and dealing 10% of the enemy's health in Shadow damage. This ability costs 1 Rune. This can be a powerful talent for both open-world questing and leveling; however, it is difficult to use in World PvP.
  5. Dark Simulacrum Icon Dark Simulacrum places a debuff on your enemy, activating when they cast a spell that uses mana. It allows you to use that same spell for some time. Not useful in PvE content.
  6. Necromancer's Bargain Icon Necromancer's Bargain reduces the cooldown of your of your Apocalypse by 15 seconds; however, your Apocalypse does not summon ghouls but instead applies Crypt Fever to the target. Crypt fever deals up to 8% of the target's maximum health as Shadow damage over 4 seconds. Healing spells cast on the target refresh the duration of Crypt Fever. This is a strong choice for World PvP.
  7. Rot and Wither Icon Rot and Wither adds an absorption shield to any target hit by Death and Decay Icon Death and Decay for 100% of the damage amount. Useless pretty much.
  8. Necrotic Wounds Icon Necrotic Wounds your Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds now apply a healing absorption when they burst, absorbing a stacking 5% of healing for 15 seconds. Good for PvP but not usable in PvE content.
  9. Strangulate Icon Strangulate silences your target for 4 seconds. Inferior to just running Asphyxiate Icon Asphyxiate (it replaces the talent) and a pretty useless talent.

Doomburst Icon Doomburst is a solid choice due to its nice DPS gain, helping you to consume Festering Wound Icon Festering Wounds. No other talent does much for us in PvE, and are primarily PvP choices. For a second and third option, we don't have much to choose from. Bloodforged Armor Icon Bloodforged Armor is generally best due to providing a good defensive gain, and Spellwarden Icon Spellwarden is a small defensive gain!
