About Our Reviewer

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Magnuss, a top Unholy Death Knight who raids in Occasional Excellence.

1. Preface

On this page, we provide both the Mastery-oriented (most likely more viable) and the Critical Strike-oriented stat priority recommendations. Keep in mind that each of these two priorities requires different talent choices (as detailed on the talents page).

2. Mastery

2.1. Gems

You should use Saber's Eye of Strength Icon Saber's Eye of Strength in one socket, and Masterful Shadowruby Icon Masterful Shadowruby in all other sockets.

2.2. Enchants

Weapon Rune of the Fallen Crusader Icon Rune of the Fallen Crusader

3. Critical Strike

3.1. Gems

You should use Saber's Eye of Strength Icon Saber's Eye of Strength in one socket, and Deadly Eye of Prophecy Icon Deadly Eye of Prophecy in all other sockets.

3.2. Enchants

Slot Enchantment

Weapon Rune of the Fallen Crusader Icon Rune of the Fallen Crusader

4. Consumables

Flask of the Countless Armies Icon Flask of the Countless Armies should be used for raids along with Potion of the Old War Icon Potion of the Old War (single target) or Potion of Prolonged Power Icon Potion of Prolonged Power (2+ targets) as your potions of choice. You should eat Nightborne Delicacy Platter Icon Nightborne Delicacy Platter for the Mastery buff (or Barracuda Mrglgagh Icon Barracuda Mrglgagh, if you cannot afford the +375 food), or The Hungry Magister Icon The Hungry Magister for the Critical Strike buff (or Leybeque Ribs Icon Leybeque Ribs, if you cannot afford the +375 food). Ancient Healing Potion Icon Ancient Healing Potion can be used in place of Healthstones.

If you can afford it, you should also use the Legion augment rune: Defiled Augment Rune Icon Defiled Augment Rune. Note that it now works in Mythic+ dungeons (it did not used to).

5. ChangeLog

  • 17 Jan. 2017: Switched around the order in which we present the Mastery and Critical Strike recommendations to account for the fact that we consider the Mastery priority better.
  • 10 Jan. 2017: Added Mastery gearing path as well.
  • 12 Dec. 2016: Added a mention of gearing for Haste if you have 30% Critical Strike and are using the legendary wrists.
  • 16 Oct. 2016: Updated the enchants page, and removed the Clawing Shadows recommendations since Castigator is now clearly the favoured talent.
  • 29 Aug. 2016: Updated for Legion's launch.
  • 19 Jul. 2016: Removed the two separate recommendations for different talents, and instead left only one.
  • 18 Jul. 2016: Updated for the Legion pre-patch.
