MrGM interviewed Frank Kowalkowski and Steve Danuser at BlizzCon and we learned more about the new Death Knight intro coming in Patch 9.0.

Interview Highlights

  • We're going to see Arthas in Shadowlands.
  • The new Death Knight experience unlocks in Patch 8.3. The old Death Knight experience will still exist for the original races, but because of that sliver of time, it didn't make sense to just unlock Death Knights for Allied Races without a new intro, since they weren't around in Wrath.
  • The devs ended up creating a new sliver of time and the new Death Knight experience takes place prior to Sylvanas destroying the helm.
  • It's treated more like an Allied Races intro, it's not going to be a full-fledged experience.
  • Bolvar calls upon the new generation of Death Knights because he feels the power of death is on the rise.
  • Shadowlands will have a linear narrative arc meaning you'll need to follow the exact zone order on your main and go from Bastion -> Maldraxxus -> Ardenweald -> Revendreth. Legion and BfA were cool in terms of flexibility but lacked the sense of a structured story.
  • On alts, you will pick a Covenant and pick whatever zone you prefer to level in.

We see that the individual islands that form Shadowlands are not connected with one another. Flying is going to work just like in past expansions, but moving between the zones is still to be determined, we're likely going to see loading screens and Argus-style teleport.

  • In each zone, you're going to work with the Covenant which oversees that zone.
  • Players will be able to try the Covenant abilities out before picking their Covenant.
  • Switching Covenants won't be trivial, it will come at a cost.
  • Alts will be able to pick their Covenant right away. Check out our alt improvements post for more details.
  • This isn't a story about faction conflict, but about coming together and saving Shadowlands; covenants don't care if you're Alliance or Horde, they need your help.
  • Heart of Azeroth Heart of Azeroth doesn't play a part in the new story, so it won't work in Shadowlands. You will still be able to use it for Timewalking.
  • Bolvar is a major character in Shadowlands. We'll learn more about his story and what the helm has done to him since he put it on back in Wrath.
  • Two dungeons are planned for each zone.
  • Tier Sets aren't coming back in Shadowlands.
  • Death Knights will start at level 10 based on the interview, not 1 as shown in the slide below.

  • Exile's Reach (the new starting zone) is an island near Stormheim.
  • Scourge invasions are coming in the 9.0 pre-patch.

      Rogues received the following class adjustments in TWW Beta Build 55522.
      Rogue
      Momentum of Despair - If you have critically struck with , Fan of Knives or Shuriken Storm, increase the critical strike chance of Fan of Knives, Shuriken Storm, and Black Powder by 15% for 12 sec. Cloaked in Shadows - Vanish grants you a shield for 6 sec, absorbing damage equal to 30% 18% of your maximum health. Follow the Blood - Fan of Knives, Shuriken Storm, Crimson Tempest, and Black Powder deal 20% 25% additional damage while 3 or more enemies are afflicted with Rupture. Deadly Precision - N/A Increases the critical strike chance of your attacks that generate combo points by 5%. Soothing Darkness - You are healed for 24% 15% of your maximum health over 6 sec after gaining Vanish or Shadow Dance.

      Blizzard have announced they will be restarting Na servers tomorrow in order to fix an issue with Season 4 gear not being able to be upgraded. The restarts will arrive at 8 AM PDT.

      Discipline Priest - Discipline Priest core passive - Decreases damage/healing by 30%: Entropic Rift and Shadow Word: Death Pain Transformation - Pain Suppression also heals your target for 25% 15% of their maximum health and applies Atonement. Power Word: Radiance - A burst of light heals the target and 4 injured allies within 30 yards for [ 409.5% 450.4% of Spell Power ], and applies Atonement for 60% of its normal duration. Void Blast - Entropic Rift upgrades Smite into Void Blast while it is active Void Blast : Sends a blast of cosmic void energy at the enemy, causing [ 125% 110% of Spell Power ] Shadow damage.

      Blizzard has posted a roadmap for The War Within launch starting with the pre-expansion update coming on July 23!
      The Worldsoul Saga begins on July 23 with the pre-expansion update! The patch includes Warbands, Skyriding, Cross-Realm Guilds, with the Radiant Echoes pre-patch event coming one week later on July 30.
      The War Within early access begins on August 22 at 3 PM PDT. The global launch is slated for August 26 at 3 PM PDT. Season 1 will start on September 10! Mythic difficulty of Nerub-ar Palace will open one week later on September 19.

      Aurora - After you cast Holy Prism or Barrier of Faith, gain Divine Purpose Divine Purpose Holy Power abilities have a 15% chance to make your Your next Holy Power ability is free and deal deals 15% increased damage and healing. Gleaming Rays - While a Dawnlight is active, your Holy Power spenders deal 10% 6% additional damage or healing. Sun's Avatar - During Avenging Wrath, you become linked to your Dawnlights, causing [ 18% of Spell Power ] Radiant damage to enemies or [ 30% 24% of Spell Power ] healing to allies that pass through the beams, reduced beyond 5 targets. Activating Avenging Wrath applies up to4 - to 4 Dawnlights onto nearby allies or enemies and increases Dawnlight's duration by 25%. Undisputed Ruling - Hammer of Light applies Judgment to its targets, and increases your Haste by 15% 12% for 6 sec. Vanguard of Justice - Divine Storm deals 10% Enemies hit by other Holy Power spending abilities take 30% increased damage and when it hits an enemy affected by your Expurgation, it spreads the effect to up to 4 targets hit.
