Gearing your Assassination Rogue in The War Within
With the release of Season 3 of The War Within, the gear treadmill begins anew once more.
The War Within once again uses the Crest upgrade system that was introduced in Dragonflight. We recommend that you check out our dedicated page for more information on this gear upgrade system if you are not yet familiar with it:
BiS Gear for Assassination Rogue
BiS List for Assassination Rogue
This list contains the highest DPS setup from all sources for Assassination Rogue. Keep in mind that there are many other setups that perform within the margin of error, so this list is not the end-all-be-all list where any item that is not listed, is far behind this selection.
This list is by no means a replacement for simming yourself. Depending on your previous Great Vault choices and the gear you have available to yourself, your BiS gear might look different than this list in some spots.
In some non-Tier slots, a max ilvl Craft (720) will technically be optimal since you can customize the secondary stats to your liking. Your mileage here may vary.

Best Trinkets for Assassination Rogue in Season 3
There are a number of good trinkets available for Assassination Rogue in Season 3, from a variety of different sources. Some relevant ones to look for are:
Deathstalker:
Araz's Ritual Forge – The only viable high-ilvl on-use trinket from raid this season, this is a must play for any Assassination Rogue. No other trinket comes remotely close to this one.
Fatebound:
Lily of the Eternal Weave – This will be your on-use item if you end up playing
Fatebound, as your 90-second on-use trinket.
Fatebound:
Unyielding Netherprism – This On-Use trinket can be stronger than Lily, but you will only use it every 3 minutes alongside your Deathmark, instead of every 90 seconds. It also doesn't provide a big boost on pull, but for any pure single-target boss where you do not need the burst in P1, this trinket is very good. Whether or not this trinket outshines Lily, depends heavily on the fight duration, i.e. having a 4-minute or 7-minute fight, or if there are good damage amp phases that you can line up with its use every 3 minutes. In those cases this trinket is phenomenal.
Astral Antenna – Astral Antenna is a great passive trinket that you can grab from the Manaforge Omega as well. You have to pick up a small orb to receive its effect, and it slowly travels towards you as well.
Improvised Seaforium Pacemaker – A strong option to Astral Antenna, that does not suffer any of its shortcomings, and is usable in both Raid and Mythic+.
Ara-Kara Sacbrood – A solid alternative passive bonus trinket, that can be farmed in Mythic+.
Reshii Wraps
In Patch 11.2, you can acquire a new artifact cloak, the Reshii Wraps. This cloak is mostly used in the open-world, and you can find more information on how to acquire the cloak, as well as all the neat little secrets you can find with it on our Reshii Wraps section!
Tailoring can craft sockets for the cloak which will grant it a set
of secondary stats of your choosing. We will want to either grab a Pure Precise Fiber
for Critical Strike, or
Pure Energizing Fiber for Mastery. Which
gem is best for you generally depends on which stat you have less off at the moment,
and
Fatebound wants more Crit than
Deathstalker.
You can also acquire a set of boots inside Manaforge Omega which further
boosts the proc-effect of your cloak, the Interloper's Reinforced Sandals, which
drop from The Soul Hunters, an entirely optional boss inside the new raid.
These new boots are best in slot for us, even at lower itemlevels, but the exact
threshold will heavily depend on your alternative options. Make sure to sim yourself
to find out whether a Normal or Heroic version of the boots outperforms your current
boots!
Dimensius The All Devouring can drop a ring, the Band of the Shattered Soul, which
causes the proc of your cloak to also reduce Cosmic damage taken by 50%, up to a certain
amount of damage absorbed. This effect has no DPS benefits whatsoever, and while it is a nice
bonus to have, our class kit makes us so tanky already that we would rather play a ring
that offers higher DPS instead, leaving the ring for some of the squishier classes.
The Importance of "Simming Yourself" as a Assassination Rogue
With all the different layers of gearing currently available to players, it is impossible to cover all edge cases and individual recommendations in a guide. We therefore highly recommend simming your own character by using Raidbots. This website allows for precise and individualized recommendations that consider your exact talents, gear, trinket, and all the other layers of gearing that the game has to offer. Learning to use this tool is essential to maximizing your potential, as it is the only reliable way to get information on which piece of gear, enchant, gem, or trinket is the best for your character.
Droptimizer
The Droptimizer feature from Raidbots lets you identify which dungeons and Raid Bosses offer the highest DPS upgrades to you. It simulates all of the potential upgrades in a raid or a dungeon and lists the bosses/dungeons by rank order of how much DPS you can expect to gain from each of the items it drops. We have a guide for it that you can access using the link below.
Valorstones and Crest Upgrade Recommendations
These are some of the items you should prioritize on upgrading as high as possible early into the season:
- Your Mainhand dagger.
- Powerful trinkets like
Araz's Ritual Forge or
Astral Antenna
- Items with a high stat budget, like your Chest, Helmet, or Legs.
- Embellished or other items with damaging procs.
These are not the only items worth upgrading, of course. They simply offer the highest DPS gain early into the tier when your upgrade currency is limited.
Professions and Crafted Gear
Professions are a great way to gear up with your optimal secondary stats, as generating specific secondary stat combinations is now possible when adding special items to the crafting process. With the heavily reworked crafting system in The War Within, exploring the new professions will help you gear up throughout the expansion, as you will be able to craft some Mythic Raid item-level pieces further down the line.
If you want to find out more about professions, make sure to check out our The War Within Profession guide!
As your ability to craft items will be time-gated in the initial stages of The War Within, we highly recommend getting a Main Hand weapon as soon as possible, unless you can reliably get one elsewhere. Once you have a good weapon, work on Embellished Items next, and then craft whichever pieces you do not have high-item-level versions of yet.
Embellished Items
Up to two of your crafted items can be Embellished. This is a similar concept as Unique-Equipped, as you can only wear two items that have the Embellished status. Some crafted items, many of which have powerful procs or beneficial effects by default, are considered Embellished. You can also add Embellishments from a variety of professions to any crafted item, adding the effect to this item either when creating it or at a later stage.
As there is a lot of competition for Embellishments, you will have to pick and choose the two strongest ones for your overall DPS output. Most of them provide very similar DPS benefits, even if the effects are entirely different. The two best choices for this are:
- For Raid:
Darkmoon Sigil: Ascension on a weapon and
Writhing Armor Banding
- For Mythic+: Two
Dawnthread Lining items.
It is recommended to sim yourself to find out what works best, and if you also play the other 2 Rogue specs, you might want to pick Embellishments that work well for all of them.
Adding Sockets to Gear
You can add sockets to your necklace and rings by using a
Magnificent Jeweler's Setting
on them. This will allow you to get up to six sockets on your gear.
You can also add sockets to Helmets, Belts, Bracers, Necks and Rings with
the S.A.D. consumable that you can get if you do not select any of the choices in
your Great Vault. Not picking a choice will grant you tokens, six of which can be
traded in for the
S.A.D. item that allows you to add a socket to any piece
of gear you acquired in Season 3.
Durable Information Securing Container
Since Patch 11.1.7 players are able to acquire the
Durable Information Securing Container belt from Delves. While this belt is not BiS for us once we acquire higher
item-level gear from Season 3 Mythic+ dungeons or the new Manaforge Omega
raid, it is worth using until you acquire a new belt of itemlevel ~710. Your
mileage here may vary, so make sure to sim yourself to figure out if the belt
you just looted can replace the DISC!
For more information on how to acquire the belt until you get a better one, make sure to check out our dedicated Delves section.
The belt has minor powers attached to it. Switching the bonuses and procs is very simple. Once unlocked, you can right-click the item to quickly swap to a different bonus. Depending on the type of content you will be doing, you will want to pick the following bonuses:
- For Raid/Single-Target:
Electric Current
- For Mythic+:
Electric Current
- For World Content/Delves:
Electric Current
Stat Priorities
Which gems and enchants to use heavily depends on your current stat priority. As previously mentioned, this priority can shift and change whenever you acquire new gear, so simming yourself to figure out the best use of your newly acquired socket is highly recommended. The general rule is to prioritize Critical Strike and Mastery on as many pieces of gear as possible, and prioritizing those stats for any consumables as well.
Season 3 Set - Manaforge Omega
If given a choice, try to prioritize the Helmet, Shoulder, Gloves, and Legs slots for this. However, getting the Chest to complete one of the bonuses is still better than any other gearing choice, and you will ultimately play all five pieces anyway.
