Scaleworm Reveal: The Witchwood

Recommended Posts

Another Rush card has been revealed.

Scaleworm was unveiled by Korean streamer 109ace on Twitch.

Opinions on this card seem to be mixed. On the one hand, a lot of useful Dragon synergy cards are rotating out of Standard in the Year of the Raven, so new ones need to be printed. On the other hand, the Scaleworm doesn't look particularly interesting and there are better options in Twilight Drake and Duskbreaker in the 4-mana slot. It also remains to be seen how good Rush will actually be.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is one of the first times we see a cross-tribe, Dragon and Beast synergy. With the introduction of this card and Nightmare Amalgam, revealed in the first live stream, as well as the rotation of many Dragon cards, we might be moving away from the traditional "Dragon helps Dragon" synergy with other tribes potentially joining in the fun. I just hope that other classes, apart from Priest, can have viable Dragon decks.

So, which side are you on: is this a good or a bad card? Or somewhere in between? You can check out all of the revealed cards in our Witchwood hub.

Eh, a 5/4 for 4 that can only attack minions when its played isn't too much better than a 4/4. Like you said, duskbreaker does a decent job at clearing the board on its own. It's a better body but I don't know if its trade off of not impacting the whole board and at best one minion is worth it. I don't think its terrible but I don't think it'll be very note worthy.

Yeh, 4 drop is pretty crowded as is.  Doesn't seem that great.  Also I am tired of seeing rush.  It just isn't an interesting mechanic.

Yeah, it feels like they realized that charge is way too gamebreaking a mechanic (finally), but were too reluctant to get rid of the mechanic altogether.     Rush cards might have value if they pump the stats right anyway, but it feels like a half baked concept.

I guess the realistic best case scenario on curve is 4-mana deal 5dmg, summon a 4/1. In conjunction with twilight acolyte it’s deal 5, summon 4/2. I’d say that’s pretty decent tbh. But ‘if you’re holding a dragon’ cards tend to need to be better than pretty decent. The 3-mana 2/4 that becomes a 3/5 often didn’t make the cut. The 6-mana 3/6 kill a 2-attack minion often didn’t make the cut.

My guess is this doesn’t see play, but if there’s other cross-tribe synergy cards coming it could get pushed in (e.g. a drak op powerlevel dragon with ‘if you’re holding a beast’ text).

The Rush mechanic is clearly a replica of Shadowverse Rush mechanic (the name being identical doesn't seem a coincidence), is widely used in that game and isn't cancerous for the game like Charge (in Shadowverse Charge is called Storm and usually minions with storm have low atk and hp or very high mana cost like King Krush) there are plenty of things like 3/2 or 2/2 with rush there and those help a lot at countering aggro.  A common play is kill a 1/3 with a 3/2 Rush to leave the leftover 3/1 on the board
