Quarterly Updates on Diablo IV in 2020

Recommended Posts

Diablo IV is very early in development and the developers have no information to share at this time. At BlizzCon, Blizzard said they were aiming for quarterly updates on the state of the game, and Community Manager Nevalistis thinks we'll see another update in the middle to second third of the Q1.

We also compiled a list of everything we know about Diablo IV so far, so check that out if you're interested to learn the latest news about the game.

At Blizzcon Blizzard announced quarterly updates starting in 2020. Well... we’re waiting!

I mean, we're 7 days into 2020. For some, the first day back at work from holiday vacation was yesterday. I understand how excited everyone is, but let's set expectations and cover a few points (some reiterated, some that might be obvious but should be said).

  • Diablo IV very, very early in development. Part of the reason we're aiming for quarterly updates is because there's not a lot right now that's ready to share. If it was ready to show, you saw it at BlizzCon.
  • Diablo IV isn't the only project we're working on, though it might be the one you're most excited about (and it's fine if you are). As a reminder, we have patches actively being developed for Diablo III as well as the ongoing work on Diablo Immortal. For both bandwidth reasons on our end as well as avoiding flooding our (currently shared) communication channels, there's strategy needed in pacing out the distribution of information.
  • Q1 means sometime between now and the end of March. April would mark the beginning of Q2. I don't have a time estimate for you, but my personal goal is to aim for somewhere in the middle to second third of the quarter. I'm not sure where exactly it's going to land; we've never approached communication in quite this manner before, and sometimes there's changes and schedule adjustments that need to be made. I suspect there will be many learnings for myself and the team with the first update as a result. ?
  • We want to put a lot of time, effort, and polish into these updates because they are so few and we care a lot about our work. However, ultimately, the content will be decided by (1) what's ready to show and (2) what conversations we're ready to have with the community. For example, I wouldn't expect the first update to be about the intricacies of end-game activities. It's still too early (some areas of the game are still in concepting, while others are being actively implemented) - but we do want to make sure we're checking in with you on systems of interest as they come together, concept art, and possibly in-progress models. It's really going to vary. Actually making the game will always be the priority.
  • Blogs take a really long time to produce, especially when they are of this caliber and content level. If video is required, even more so (as it adds an entire new team and process for review/approvals). What content we end up showing will drive the production needs, which is part of why it's so hard for me to give you an estimate on arrival.

Making games is complicated. So is supporting and communicating around them. Almost none of it can be done fast if we're going to do it well. We want to make sure the information we're giving is as clear and accurate as possible and, while we want to maintain transparency, we also don't want to risk over-promising and under delivering. This happens all too often by showing features too early.

So we are going to take our time. I understand it's hard to be patient; I literally live day to day in a building full of cool stuff I can't share and sometimes it's maddening. You can bet your hard earned gold we'll be sharing what we can as soon as possible, and it's okay to take a break from the waiting if it's eating at you. We'll just be here, hard at work. ?

It was a joke. I don’t really expect anything new in January.

I honestly expected this to get deleted pretty much immediately. But hey instead I got an actual reply. I see this as an absolute win!

Quite frankly, I expected this post to happen on January 1st and expect it to continue happening up until the update actually gets made, so rather than later being accused of "ignoring everyone" and "never updating," I'd rather get that bullet out of the way and let other folks quote this when people decide they want to be obnoxious. ?

Only a matter of time, really.

Not much info then, but then it's better if they are able deliver than overpromise. Hopefully we will learn about other classes in one of those updates, I would like to see someone from D3 return, although they will probably go full D2-like.

Here's another quick loot luck post, as some players just have it and then some. We've seen double Uniques from a single Treasure Goblin already, but this is even more extreme. Millertiimme took down Ashava and managed to get a triple Ancestral Unique drop! While we don't know exactly what the boots, ring and gloves were, they were definitely welcome!
What has been some of your best loot luck so far?

There's persistence and then there's... persistence. MrFrodoBeggins certainly shows the latter as he not only completed 1270 cellars in 3 days, but also documented his loot, locations, experience gained, Treasure Goblins found, Obols acquired, Butchers encountered and more!

So let's take a look at this huge breakdown of a very large mount of cellar clears, separated into the game's zones. You should definitely read the whole thing below, but here are some highlights:

3 Butcher run-ins 21 Treasure Goblins (7 packs of 3, as that's how they spawn in Cellars) 6352 Obols 13 Uniques 200 Legendaries 82,693,064 XP (taking them from level 84 to 89) Around 80,000,000 gold
MrFrodoBeggins' conclusion is that Cellars are very much not worth it and actively slow you down. The main takeaway from this experience has been... that there isn't enough variety in loading screens. Which makes a lot of sense if you look through 2540+ of them in 3 days. Here are his (not too serious) suggestions:

The character has a terribly small collection radius, you need to walk the character directly on grass, ore, gold ....... to collect! Dropping some currency and things from mobs is terribly long, maybe if it's 1-2 things you can put up with, but when hundreds and thousands of times it's very annoying... I have seen sooo many loading screens, the drawings are very beautiful and interesting, maybe you will organize a competition among artists and make hundreds of different drawings on the theme of Diablo 4, and give them your 1.5 seconds of fame. I think that over time, all people will get tired of the same thing, even beautiful.
Obviously we can't confirm these number as it's an individual player's findings, but we see no reason they'd be fabricated.

And there we have it! All of the ultra-rare/chase items have been found and confirmed with images or video! The final piece was the Melted Heart of Selig necklace and it dropped earlier today.

Spotted by AnyComputer, a Necromancer player had the item drop in Blind Burrows, and AnyComputer even translated it for us!

Source: Melted Heart of Selig dropped today.

This one isn't one of the more wanted ultra-rares, which may also be the reason why we've seen it last. Many players may have just salvaged it without even knowing it was something special, as it's effect isn't that impressive.

As we already mentioned in previous posts, these almost certainly aren't the first ones dropped and there are many more than have been reported out there (just without image or video proof) so their rarity is a little over-represented. They are still very rare, however, and most of us probably won't be seeing them any time soon.

The final 5 arrived in the past week after Harlequin's Crest was found relatively soon after launch. You can find them here: Andariel's Visage; The Grandfather; Doombringer; Ring of Starless Skies. If you really really want to throw a lot of time into maybe, possibly, probably not getting these, here are the spots for "farm" them in.

Here they all are in all their glory:

We've seen them run as soon as you engage them, we've seen them drop two Uniques at the same time, but this, this is something new. I suppose it was only a matter of time before the treasure carrying ones took their sweet sweet revenge. A high level Hardcore player had a very rude awakening recently after dropping their guard around the little ones. The goblin didn't have any assistance, was the only thing in the room, and yet it still got the kill.
Killthuzad was running a tier 37 Nightmare Dungeon and really showcases just how easy it is to lose a character on Hardcore.

Death Pulse does say that the pulse a monster leaves after death is "deadly", but this is on a whole new level! The goblin was level 91, however, so perhaps this isn't that surprising, but it sure was unexpected. Killthuzad's reaction is very much on point as that is definitely the weirdest way I've seen of someone losing their character.
If you want to see the rest of the death reaction you can head over here.

Here's another report on one of the rarest Unique drops in the game! A player has received The Grandfather, the crit damage heaven two handed sword. Dropped from an event chest during a Helltide, it's sporting solid rolls, multiplying all the player's crit damage by 84%!
The player sharing the image is level 76, but the player being inspected is level 100, so they may have had it for quite a while already.
This isn't necessarily (or even likely) the first of these that has dropped, but we haven't spotted anyone posting about it before. Now all that's left for that player is to get ANOTHER one with a better roll! Here's the weapon's non-Chinese stats:

Blizzard recently shared some information on the 6 ultra-rare Uniques and how they can drop. We also saw a handy infographic going over where the best place is to farm for them over here.
