Diablo 4 Hiring Monetization Director, Fenris Updated and More

Recommended Posts

We have a couple of news bits from the Diablo 4 universe to share, which may indicate that the game is coming along nicely and we maybe won't have to wait 3-500 years to see it. First off Blizzard are hiring a director of Business Performance, but the focus in the recruitment post is on creating the overall business model for the game and especially post-launch monetization. Now, we've known D4 would have microtransactions ever since they announced it, with cosmetics for the mounts and probably more, so it makes perfect sense that they'd need someone in charge of the business side of that. Despite many players being afraid that Blizzard will (eventually) offer MTXes for power itself, they've firmly stated that's never going to be the case.

Here are the relevant highlights from the job listing:

Blizzard LogoMonetization Director (source)

We are on a quest to find a legendary Director/Senior Director, Business Performance who is a master of their craft to support the Diablo franchise. The ideal candidate will partner with the design leadership to define and execute the Diablo IV business model and post-launch live service approach and support other franchise topics. Importantly, they will have a deep understanding of and empathy for our players because they are a player themselves.

The Director/Senior Director, Business Performance functions as a team lead, manages the end-to-end lifecycle of a game spanning multiple feature areas and collaborates with the game team on roadmap planning.

Objectives

  • Manage the post-launch business service for Diablo IV to drive acquisition, retention, and monetization while maintaining a healthy community
  • Define, coordinate, and execute in and out of game activities and events (e.g., pricing and promotions); propose compelling features to improve engagement, retention, and monetization; and report out on performance
  • Identify discreet player segments and develop or propose initiatives to address them
  • Create, maintain, and optimize ethical monetization models that maximize long-term franchise revenue
  • Track player life cycle and acquisition funnel and execute initiatives to grow the player base

Competencies

  • Deep knowledge in the key performance metrics that drive game performance
  • 8+ years of experience including product management, live ops performance, or monetization design

The second piece of news is that project Fenris (which is almost certainly Diablo 4) has been updated, with the encrypted vendor version moving up to 0.0.1.24218. Redditor RandomMan00 (from Spanish fansite DiabloNext) has actually dug around the configuration file of this version and found a few minor changes, namely that language compatibility for non-English have been added, and the .exe itself as been renamed to Fenris_ra.exe (from just Fenris.exe). RandomMan00 also noticed that the Fenris builds are linear with time, so he extrapolated when development began: February 1st, 2015. Obviously all of this is speculation, but it's still pretty interesting that additional languages are already being configured. If you're interested in the full details of the digging, here's the reddit thread.

We've already had someone poke through Fenris details before, which led to the conclusion that D4 may not be as far away as we think, and you can check out that speculation here.

And finally we have a fun little thing, as new franchise director Rod Fergusson recently tweeted a Diablo 4 clothes patch that he's upset he doesn't get to show off enough due to the pandemic:

So, while there's isn't a whole lot going on with Diablo 4, we alt least get some snippets of progress every now and then. The biggest discussions in the community are, as you'd expect, when exactly the game is coming out, with predictions ranging from 2021 to 2024.

"CRZ will never be active in current content"

Blizzard has been toying with P2Win since MoP but thankfully only on the chinese and korean versions of games, I think D3 has some sort of microtransactions on the chinese version too

The backlash would be way too strong over here. I seriously struggle to see them do it. They can mess up (WC3:re), they can change their minds for reasons, but making a game P2W here would be complete madness.

To be honest, despite complaints of 'greed' every time they add something to the store, their pricing has always struck me as treading astonishingly on the side of avoiding devaluing gameplay.

Hammond would work way better as a cat.

Here's another quick loot luck post, as some players just have it and then some. We've seen double Uniques from a single Treasure Goblin already, but this is even more extreme. Millertiimme took down Ashava and managed to get a triple Ancestral Unique drop! While we don't know exactly what the boots, ring and gloves were, they were definitely welcome!
What has been some of your best loot luck so far?

There's persistence and then there's... persistence. MrFrodoBeggins certainly shows the latter as he not only completed 1270 cellars in 3 days, but also documented his loot, locations, experience gained, Treasure Goblins found, Obols acquired, Butchers encountered and more!

So let's take a look at this huge breakdown of a very large mount of cellar clears, separated into the game's zones. You should definitely read the whole thing below, but here are some highlights:

3 Butcher run-ins 21 Treasure Goblins (7 packs of 3, as that's how they spawn in Cellars) 6352 Obols 13 Uniques 200 Legendaries 82,693,064 XP (taking them from level 84 to 89) Around 80,000,000 gold
MrFrodoBeggins' conclusion is that Cellars are very much not worth it and actively slow you down. The main takeaway from this experience has been... that there isn't enough variety in loading screens. Which makes a lot of sense if you look through 2540+ of them in 3 days. Here are his (not too serious) suggestions:

The character has a terribly small collection radius, you need to walk the character directly on grass, ore, gold ....... to collect! Dropping some currency and things from mobs is terribly long, maybe if it's 1-2 things you can put up with, but when hundreds and thousands of times it's very annoying... I have seen sooo many loading screens, the drawings are very beautiful and interesting, maybe you will organize a competition among artists and make hundreds of different drawings on the theme of Diablo 4, and give them your 1.5 seconds of fame. I think that over time, all people will get tired of the same thing, even beautiful.
Obviously we can't confirm these number as it's an individual player's findings, but we see no reason they'd be fabricated.

And there we have it! All of the ultra-rare/chase items have been found and confirmed with images or video! The final piece was the Melted Heart of Selig necklace and it dropped earlier today.

Spotted by AnyComputer, a Necromancer player had the item drop in Blind Burrows, and AnyComputer even translated it for us!

Source: Melted Heart of Selig dropped today.

This one isn't one of the more wanted ultra-rares, which may also be the reason why we've seen it last. Many players may have just salvaged it without even knowing it was something special, as it's effect isn't that impressive.

As we already mentioned in previous posts, these almost certainly aren't the first ones dropped and there are many more than have been reported out there (just without image or video proof) so their rarity is a little over-represented. They are still very rare, however, and most of us probably won't be seeing them any time soon.

The final 5 arrived in the past week after Harlequin's Crest was found relatively soon after launch. You can find them here: Andariel's Visage; The Grandfather; Doombringer; Ring of Starless Skies. If you really really want to throw a lot of time into maybe, possibly, probably not getting these, here are the spots for "farm" them in.

Here they all are in all their glory:

We've seen them run as soon as you engage them, we've seen them drop two Uniques at the same time, but this, this is something new. I suppose it was only a matter of time before the treasure carrying ones took their sweet sweet revenge. A high level Hardcore player had a very rude awakening recently after dropping their guard around the little ones. The goblin didn't have any assistance, was the only thing in the room, and yet it still got the kill.
Killthuzad was running a tier 37 Nightmare Dungeon and really showcases just how easy it is to lose a character on Hardcore.

Death Pulse does say that the pulse a monster leaves after death is "deadly", but this is on a whole new level! The goblin was level 91, however, so perhaps this isn't that surprising, but it sure was unexpected. Killthuzad's reaction is very much on point as that is definitely the weirdest way I've seen of someone losing their character.
If you want to see the rest of the death reaction you can head over here.

Here's another report on one of the rarest Unique drops in the game! A player has received The Grandfather, the crit damage heaven two handed sword. Dropped from an event chest during a Helltide, it's sporting solid rolls, multiplying all the player's crit damage by 84%!
The player sharing the image is level 76, but the player being inspected is level 100, so they may have had it for quite a while already.
This isn't necessarily (or even likely) the first of these that has dropped, but we haven't spotted anyone posting about it before. Now all that's left for that player is to get ANOTHER one with a better roll! Here's the weapon's non-Chinese stats:

Blizzard recently shared some information on the 6 ultra-rare Uniques and how they can drop. We also saw a handy infographic going over where the best place is to farm for them over here.
