Class Changes in Battle for Azeroth

Recommended Posts

The post covers changes to talent trees and new abilities in Battle for Azeroth.

It's time to look at Class changes in Battle for Azeroth!

Note: This is a very early preview of BfA talents and anything is subject to change at any time during testing.

Last update: June 20, 2018: Battle for Azeroth Beta Build 26812 Talent Changes

Table of Contents

Class Design Philosophy in Battle for Azeroth

In the latest Watercooler, Blizzard talked about the philosophy and approach to class design in Battle for Azeroth. The goal is to promote what makes each class unique, improve visuals, and greater stability across the board. The overall talent system will remain relatively unchanged, but some specializations are subject to big talent changes (Survival Hunter). Artifact weapons will be gone and getting rid of Artifact traits produces a complex set of decisions about how to adjust the base classes to play well in their absence. Some Artifact talents have been baked into talents. For example Fire Mage's Artifact trait Phoenix's FlamesPhoenix's Flames (Felo'melornFelo'melorn) is a level 60 talent (Phoenix FlamesPhoenix Flames) in Battle for Azeroth.

In the latest Q/A with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas we learned that many raid-wide spells and crowd control abilities are returning in Battle for Azeroth. The goal is to promote a wide diversity of class and spec representation and reduce homogenization. As seen below, Survival Hunters got a lot of new talents in the first build of BfA. One of the reasons for the overhaul was class fantasy. It's strange when a Survival Hunter suddently forgets how to use a bow at level 10.

Enhancement Shamans are getting their totems back! Totem MasteryTotem Mastery is a new talent available at level 15 and Windfury TotemWindfury Totem at 75. Arms Warriors got a new mastery (Mastery: Deep WoundsMastery: Deep Wounds) and more!

Below is an early preview of *new* abilities & talents added in Patch 8.0.1 Build 25902. Some specializations are still missing talents (N/A).

No changes for Holy Priest (my main) yet. If I was a bitter sort I would say that Blizz seems to think our weapon perks are not worth conserving / converting :-)

I'd agree with you about my Guardian Druid, especially considering it prevents a single instance of character movement impairment.  And the 25% damage and Leech with Damage reduction doesn't hurt either.  Maybe I am a bitter sort...

On the bright side: As it is still freaking early there is a lot of time for the devs to do stuff and make us all happy in the end :-)

Is the lone wolf playstyle of MM hunter dead then or am I blind? Will it be made baseline for the spec like it was originally intended for Legion?

LW is being made a MM passive....still

I like that they are doing this, but I'm not so happy about making them choices in a talent tree.
As an example, the final tier of the Ret tree forces a player to choose between Crusade and Wake of Ashes...  That's not really a choice, since the majority of people will still use Crusade (making the addition of Wake of Ashes meaningless).

Granted, I realize that this is the "very early preview", but this formula will require a great deal of tuning to make it feasible and competitive with existing talent choices.

I'll guess that a lot of artifact traits will become passives on the Heart of Azeroth, among other new effects.

Wake of Ashes will likely be an AoE choice.

Wake of Ashes will likely be an AoE choice.

It remains to be seen. If Crusade remains at 20 seconds and Wake of Ashes stays on the same row - it might really hit Retribution hard. Wake of Ashes, though useful in AoE, is mainly used for quickly building the Crusade stacks. Without it, the opening rotation feels clunky and you have a lot of downtime between your casts. Even more so when Divine Purpose is also on the same row.

This is why I think that putting Artifact Abilities as talent choices is not a good idea from a design perspective - Crusade will probably still contribute more damage out of the three, while the other two will just make for a more engaging rotation. So you'll be torn between what plays better and what deals more damage.

I am so confused? Are they turning Survival Hunters back into a ranged spec? Or will it be a Hybrid? Such as having both a melee and a Ranged weapon? To be honest i quite like the melee aspect of Survival Hunters in legion and it would be a shame for them to remove it

I... Don't find changes to Assassinisation big enough. Dispatch is just same as hemorrhage - it will be strong at start of addon but because it will not scale from mastery to mid-end it will be just useless. Also end tier is just too plain and simple - you pick either Crimson Tempest for aoe or disgusting, random, destinied to be deleted but for some reason blizzard decided to keep it Poison Bomb for single-target. Ugh...

So why shouldn`t we discuss it? :P

Never said you can't discuss it, I'm just pointing out it's a early preview and it can change at any time.

So, is Legsweep baseline for Monks now? Because that would be rad as hell.

It does look like that, yeah. As a Mistweaver main, I approve of Legsweep as a baseline ability

I've just seen shadow priest changes and I don't like them, spriest is one of the most challenging dps spec, so many spells, rotation that changes on different equip, bosses, fight situation etc etc and it is very hard to dress unless you do mythic raiding (which i don't do but it's ok). I know it's a pain in the neck to balance it but by far it's the best spec I've played in this game. I am a better and more engaged player because of it.

 Auspicious Spirits    Twist of Fate
 Lingering Insanity    Mindbender
Legacy of the Void   Void Torrent

Having those talents on the same tier means changing the core of the spriest spec, which is timing and do your best to extend void uptime, with all possible tricks, dispersion can be the best dps cd due to mindbender and lingering insanity, Legacy of the Void  is something that tells you not to fuck up your one minute rotation, and the timing of void torrent and bender is something that helps you in this almost impossible task in fights with a lot of movement or survival needs. Twist of Fate is something that affect all raid, you need to be alive in the end and all healers know it. Haste is by far our most important stat but at some point all stats prio change, also due to the Tset design and Auspicious Spirits  always making crit interesting.

It tooks a full exp to get the spriest right, but now that they get it, they want to make it a dummy spec? I cleared antorus hc with 4 t20 pieces ( we don't do mythic and I had 4 945  t21 pieces in bag) even with the haste buff at the time the 4 pieces t21 wasn't worth.
But I managed to be in the top 3 dps on 1st kill, and the week we killed it I started being in the weakest dps group, but optimizing my char and my play style I got to the top. I increased my dps by 50%. And that's what I love about this game and what makes wow better than the others, brain.

To maximize spriest damage during progress you have to think, know the fight, know every bit of your spec so you can adjust timing based on fight and raid dps. Now to me it looks like a pew pew spec and nothing more. I don't care most of casual gamers feel frustrated by it, this game is fun not because of farming and they made abundantly clear that we need to farm dps, not by challenging stuff but boring repetitive stupid tasks that keep us playing every day.

I understand wow community is big and various but I think now it's the time to put advices in char choosing, you just need to tell ppl some specs are challenging to master, so no complains you said it before. In this way every player can make its choice.

I've never had more fun playing wow, mastering this spec took me the entire expansion (I started playing legion in january), and yeah playing m+ before the void eruption buff and leg chest was pointless, same thing progressing raid without previous set, but whatever it's the useless boring stupid repetitive farming that makes me angry.

The core of wow users are ppl who have scientific background that plays with their mind, make addons that made blizzard fortune, pushing wow to esports with m+ because you need to think to go very high in m+, and be very fast and reactive, equip matters but it seems to me that they are going to make equip the only requirement and the most important part of the game. It's the challenge that keeps most of us attached to the game, it is the challenge/reward mechanics that keep us addicted.

If they want to widen their target they need toput skills in the formula also for pve, we are limited to 60-70 apm, why we had to be limited when there are games with ppl touching the 300 apm ?, I was a starcraft/bw player I know what I mean.

And last of all, I cannot fcking understand why with the billions they made with this game, even with a 1080 ti and an overclocked 7700k we can't play at 60 fps everywhere

Expecting a lot of changes to Hunter, except for BM. Lone Wolf has always polarised the player base, but tbh if they let MM have a pet it would honestly come down to whether BM or MM does the most damage rather than a choice of individual playstyle. BM seems fairly stable; they seem have figured out the niche and flavour they want for that.

Survival sounds equal parts messy and intriguing. The reduction in attack range will be the most jarring change for most I think, and Mongoose Bite as a talent (the main damage ability in Legion) is beyond weird. By the sounds of the talent tree, it seems to replace Raptor Strike, which is normally the Focus dump ability (or refreshes Serpent Sting talent) unless you have something like Throwing Axes, which now generates focus? Lots of ranged abilities / talents as well on top of an even clunkier melee rotation by the gist of it? Noticing a fair bit of Cleave / DoT being added; to make up for the loss of Caltrops?

Camouflage should be a baseline ability already, or at least not switched places in the tiers to compete with crowd control abilities, and the level 45 movement tier that doesn't seem to indicate that they apply to Disengage and will remain with Harpoon only makes me sad. I'd be happy if Harpoon worked like Grappling Hook and didn't root or apply a DoT, that's how useful precise movement ability is. Dumping everything onto Harpoon is useless so that you always require to run INTO melee / aggro range of an enemy instead of gaining the benefits from Disengage because you fucking NEED precise and safe manoeuvrability for raiding and pvp as melee.

Sweet battlecry, they absolutely crippled the Rend talent. Guess I'll be taking Trauma instead. A lot of changes to Arms... I wonder how it will play?

I'm also curious why they didn't bump level 100 talents to 105 and add a level 120 8th tier talent row that mimics current artifact abilities, Such as their gold traits.

A new book discovered by Ursoc on the 10.2 PTR tells a story of a dragon named "Erinethria" and her bold adventures "Beyond the Storming Sea", possibly hinting at Patch 11.0 and the next WoW expansion.
The book has 9 pages and here's the full transcript:
      Transcript
      1
In the days when the kingdom of dragons was young, brave Erinethria's emerald wings soared above the clouds.
The fastest flier of her day, she feared no enemy. Nor would she back down from any challenge.
Alas, her courage would be her undoing.
      2
Erinethria had flown to the far corners of Kalimdor and back. She had witnessed wondrous sights, and loved to share stories of them with her kin.
Yet there came a day when Erinethria felt she had seen all there was to see of the world. She grew bored. Restless.
      3
Erinethria sought the wisdom of Keeper Tyr.
"Great keeper, is there any mystery left for me to discover? Any riddle yet to be solved?"
"Everything you need is here, child. What more could you want to see? What else could you seek to know?"
      4
As the dragon's brow furrowed, a cool wind blew in from the west.
"The breeze, great keeper. I wish to see the place from whence the winds are born."
Tyr grew solemn. "Beyond the Storming Sea lies only ruin. Stay close to home. Stay close to kin."
      5
Tyr's warning hung like a shadow over Erinethria's heart. It clashed again and again with her deep yearning for answers.
One bright morning, the green dragons bid farewell to her clutchmates.
"Fear not," she told them, "for I can fly higher than any storm. Faster than any thunder. and when I know from whence the west winds come, I shall return home and tell you all!"
      6
And with that, Erinethria soared into the sky.
Moons passed. And still more. Yet brave Erinethria did not return.
Even Ysera woke from her dreaming to aid in the search. But there was no sign to be found.
      7
Most believed that Erinethria was lost to the Storming Sea. That her nightly wings grew tired and torn by the harsh winds, and that she tumbled into the roiling waters.
But some greens claimed that they saw her in their dreams. That she reached a land beyond, where she raised a brood of her own.
      8
Surely after all these ages, we must accept the truth of her loss. While we honor her courage, we must remember the wisdom she failed to heed.
Beyond the Storming Sea lies only ruin. Stay close to home. Stay close to kin.
      9
Beware, beware, the wind from the west. Its call holds only doom,
For if you take wings across storm and sea,
      You shall share Erinethria's tomb.
      Summary
The book tells a story of a green dragon named Erinethria, famed for her unparalleled flying skills and bravery. Having explored vast expanses of Kalimdor, she still yearned for more. Despite Keeper Tyr's warnings against venturing beyond the Storming Sea, her curiosity led her to seek the source of the west winds.
Sadly, she never returned after her departure. While most believed she perished in the Storming Seas, some dreamt of her in distant lands. The tale ends with a cautionary reminder of the perilous call of the western winds and the importance of listening to advice.
"Beware, beware, the winds from the west. Its call holds only doom."
So far, we know the Patch 11.0 Heroic Edition pre-order mount is called Algarian Stomrider and we expect Blizzard to reveal the next expansion at BlizzCon 2023.
