Tavern Brawl: Hall of Champions

This week's Brawl honours the 3 previous Hearthstone World Champions!

The 2018 World Championship is about to begin and Team 5 is celebrating by giving us a very special Tavern Brawl. In this Brawl, you get to play with decks that the previous world champions from 2014, 2015 and 2016 used on their way to the top. Your player name will even change to the respective Champion: Firebat, Ostkaka or Pavel!

Here are the deck archetypes you can get:

  • Firebat's Undertaker Hunter
  • Firebat's Ramp Druid
  • Firebat's Miracle Rogue
  • Firebat's Zoolock
  • Ostkaka's Patron Warrior
  • Ostkaka's Oil Rogue
  • Ostkaka's Freeze Mage
  • Pavel's Tempo Mage
  • Pavel's Malygos Miracle Rogue
  • Pavel's Midrange Shaman
  • Pavel's C'Thun Warrior
  • Pavel's Malygos OTK Druid

You might think: "why would I want to play a deck from 2014 with cards that have been nerfed"? Well, all cards are on their pre-nerfed versions, therefore they are basically in the same state as when originally used by each World Champion. So, say hello to pre-nerf Undertaker, Leper Gnome, Hex and many others.

Amnesiac can never catch a break.

A slight inconsistency is that cards that generate other cards or tokens, like Piloted Shredder or Babbling Book, can generate cards/tokens from later expansions. For example, my opponent's dead Shredder created Friendly Bartender, a card that neither Champion had encountered at their time.

Enjoy the Brawl and tune in to the World Championship this weekend!

This is an incredible idea for a Brawl. No idea how it will shake out in practice, but I'm excited to try.

Getting to play with pre-nerf cards is going to be super sweet. It's a shame we don't get pre-nerf patron warrior though, it would have been... interesting... to try and pilot that deck again.

I got contribution to win games as warlock after playing rogue in the brawl. Nothing bad with that but still strange.

Was it about 30 minutes after the brawl opened on EU? Becayse my Shredder did exactly that, and I was playing Oil Rogue against Ramp Druid.

Nah, I did it much later and I was playing Firebat's Undertaker Hunter against Ostkaka's Warrior.

Fun fact: Firebat isn't exactly my favourite player in the world and I was ready to rage-concede out of principle, but then I noticed that Undertaker was at its pre-nerfed version so I stayed where I was... winning > principles

The latest Hearthstone community contribution allows you to train the skills needed to master Combo Priest: quick thinking, fast mouse movements, strategic decisions and on-the-spot calculations. What's more to ask?!
Combo or OTK or APM Priest is a reiteration of Combo and Vivid Nightmare Priest that was born with The Boomsday Project thanks to two cards: Topsy Turvy and Test Subject. Dog is credited as the creator and true master of the deck:
Many have subsequently tried and failed to pilot the deck, which can require almost 100 moves during the 75 seconds of a single turn. Pro players like Trump and Thijs have hilariously failed, while others like Disguised Toast and Kolento kept trying until they got the hang of it.
Right now, you might be dreading that you don't have the IQ to play this deck. Fear no more: everything can be practiced and Patashu has made the tool for it! Combo Priest Simulator allows you to practice the OTK combo on your browser, while also timing you. You can change the parameters of the starting gamestate, too.
In all seriousness, the deck's winrate is below average and it's honestly too much trouble for too little gain. Then again, slamming your opponent's face for 100+ damage is quite satisfactory. It would be awesome if someone was brave enough to bring this deck at a tournament: it would be the casters' nightmare!
Apart from Combo Priest Simulator, we have a guide for Topsy Turvy OTK Priest here on Icy Veins; the guide breaks down the necessary steps of the combo in a useful priority list. Alternatively, you can listen to Aleco trying to explain how the deck works to Patrick (and actually succeeding) in the latest Icy Veins Podcast!
