Free Characters in Neverness to Everness

Neverness to Everness offers a pretty good selection of free characters to help new and free-to-play players build a solid team early on. Most of these characters can be unlocked through story progression within the first ~two hours of play or by completing milestones in different aspects of the game.

As of right now you can obtain the following characters for free, either by progressing through the story or from simply logging in regularly. The main four that you will be unlocking as you start your journey into NTE pair quite well together, all belonging to the same Esper Cycle.

List of Permanently Obtainable Free Characters

Zero
Zero

Zero, also called "Esper Zero", or simply "Appraiser", is the protagonist that you play as in NTE and an S-Rank character. You can pick your gender at the start of the game, and can swap it freely through the options in the menu, with a 24-hour cooldown.

They are a decent all-rounder unit, with a high-damaging Ultimate and Skill that cover a decently sized area. Investing in Zero will depend heavily on whether or not you plan on pulling much during the release of the game, or if you are waiting for a future banner character instead, at which point you may want to invest in the MC.

  • Element: Cosmos
  • Arc Type: Solid
  • How to Obtain: Automatically gained as you start the game.
  • Should you Invest? -Yes, Zero is a great sub DPS option with most teams especially if you are running teams they can trigger Esper Cycle reactions with.
Mint
Mint

Mint is an A-Rank DPS unit that joins you right after the Prologue. She is a bit of a goofball, but a very endearing one at that, and she can pack a real punch with a dupe or two. She naturally matches well with the Appraiser, as they both form an Esper Cycle duo with her being Anima to the protagonists Cosmos.

She does great damage in a large area with both her Ultimate and Skill, and will contribute a great deal of DPS when invested into.

  • Element: Anima
  • Arc Type: Liquid
  • How to Obtain: Automatically joins after the Prologue.
  • Should you Invest? - Maybe, she is a pretty good choice early on for a main DPS. However, she is easily overshadowed by S rank DPS options if you get them.
Adler
Adler

Adler is an A-Rank single-target DPS, who can put out incredible nukes with his Ultimate if set up properly. As a Incantation Esper user, Mint and Adler can duo together to apply the Hexed effect which deals extra damage based on the damage taken in the last 12 seconds. His ultimate deals more damage when fighting a single-target, and combining these parts of his kit together, he can out-DPS quite a few S-Rank characters on bosses. in addition he has a strong shield helping incredibly well with team survivability.

  • Element: Incantation
  • Arc Type: Condensate
  • How to Obtain: Automatically joins when you reach the Eibon Antique Shop as part of the main story (~30min of gameplay) .
  • Should you Invest? - If you lack single-target boss damage, he is an easily accessible option.
Haniel
Haniel

Haniel is an A-Rank Support character, who you gain access to once you unlock the Gacha, as she is a guaranteed pull. She can buff the team's ATK power, scaling off of her own, but unfortunately she doesn't have any Esper Cycle's with the rest of the team, as she is a Psyche character, who can only combo with Lakshana or Chaos partners.

Still, she is a solid support unit early on, and you want to at least get her ATK up a bit to improve the DPS of the rest of the team.

  • Element: Psyche
  • Arc Type: Solid
  • How to Obtain: Automatically acquired once you unlock the Gacha and do a tutorial pull. Another copy is earned from finishing stop 10 of Fracture Circle in beyond the rails.
  • Should you Invest? - It is worth getting her ATK up a bit as long as you use her in your team, so she can buff the rest of your squad.
Chiz
Chiz

Chiz is another S-Rank character you can get for free, although acquiring her will take you quite a bit of time. Not only will you get her for free, but you will also be able to acquire all six Awakening shards and 5 copies of her signature weapon, granting you a fully maxed out S-Rank character!

Chiz is a Cosmos DPS with a very reactive gameplay, as her damage output will fluctuate due to her kit being built around an ever-changing Grain Market mechanic, essentially a stock market. You will want to release your damage when it is peaking, and build up resources when it is low.

  • Element: Cosmos
  • Arc Type: Gas
  • How to Obtain: City Tycoon Level Unlock.
  • Should you Invest? Yes, she is a strong DPS character even at A0 and with her free dupes you'll get even more out of her. Her kit is very unique and can be quite fun. You will likely be able to get great value out of playing her, provided you enjoy her gameplay and invest in her. Literally and figuratively!
Aurelia
Aurelia

Aurelia is another A-Rank character you can get for free, available through the log-in event on the game's launch. While we do not yet know whether this will be a permanent event for players once the game has been out a while, she is going to be available for free for anyone logging in at least three times during the game's launch period.

Aurelia is a DPS Esper that can help group enemies with her Ultimate, and can be played as both a main or sub DPS.

  • Element: Psyche
  • Arc Type: Plasma
  • How to Obtain: Global Launch Login Event
  • Should you Invest? Maybe, She is a solid dps option for a lot of team comps. However, as a Psyche Esper she does best with teams consisting of Chaos and Incantation Espers which is not the most FTP friendly team comp meaning it might be better to focus on other characters before her.
