Esper Cycles in Neverness to Everness

Esper Cycles in Neverness to Everness

A Characters Element, called Esper, is an important aspect of the combat in Neverness to Everness, as characters can combo with one another in an Esper Cycle. These will cause a variety of different effects depending on the characters used, and it will greatly enhance your ability to take down even the toughest foes if you learn how to master the Esper Cycle of your characters.

Elements and Esper Cycle in Neverness to Everness

Neverness to Everness has an element system, with each character belonging to a certain type of element called Esper. On top of that, there is a system called Esper Cycle, which leads to powerful combo attacks when leveraged to its fullest extent

There are currently six elements/Esper in Neverness to Everness:

Beta Disclaimer The below information was collected from playing during the Co-Ex Beta test. Many of the bonuses of characters have changed between Beta cycles, so for the full release of the game, some of the below effects may change for the game's full launch once again.

Esper Meter

The Esper Meter is essentially a bar or circle that you fill, allowing you to trigger an Esper Attack when swapping to the character. This bar can be filled in one of multiple ways:

  • A character's skills, which use the Cycle Rate stat to recharge a certain amount of Esper Meter
  • Parrying an attack will fully charge the Esper Meter for the character
  • Being on field and basic attacking will gradually charge the meter

Esper Attacks

Once a character's meter is fully charged, their portrait in the party overview begins to glow. Switching to this character in combat, will allow them to trigger an Esper Attack. This attack will deal a high amount of damage by itself, but the most important thing about it, is that it can be chained into other characters and their respective Esper Attacks, which will then cause special and very powerful effects.

Esper Cycle

While you can just trigger Esper attacks whenever they are available, the biggest benefit comes from your ability to chain them for even more powerful combos. These are called the Esper Cycle, and there is 8 possible combinations. Looking at the element overview, you can quickly see which abilities work together, as neighboring elements can cause a duo effect, while the two triplets at the top and bottom can be triggered together for trio attacks as well!

In total, there are 8 possible Esper Cycle triggers:

  • Cosmos and Anima - Causes the Blossom effect, which will spawn a turret that can shoot at enemies, dealing damage in a small AoE.
  • Cosmos and Lakshana - Causes the Remora effect, marking enemies and slowing them down, including their attack animations.
  • Incantation and Anima - Causes the Hexed effect, which will cause a burst of damage based on the damage the target has taken in the last couple of seconds.
  • Incantation and Chaos - Causes the Scorch effect, dealing damage over time.
  • Psyche and Chaos - Causes the Nova effect, which will deal burst damage after a short period of time elapses.
  • Psyche and Lakshana - Causes the Stain effect, making the enemy vulnerable to Psyche and Lakshana damage.

On top of the above duo effects, there are also two trio-Esper Cycle combos:

  • Lakshana + Cosmos + Anima - Charge: When a target marked by Remora (Cosmos+Lakshana) gets hit by a Blossom (Cosmos+Anima), you will passively generate a large amount of ultimate Energy for the on-field character whenever one of the blossoms hits the enemy.
  • Incantation + Chaos + Psyche - Discord: If the enemy is affected by both Scorch (Incantation+Chaos) and Nova (Chaos+Psyche) at the same time, they will take a massive amount of Stagger damage.

Optimizing the Esper Cycle

In order to get the most out of the Esper Cycle system, you will want to set up trio-effects whenever possible. Some character naturally build up Esper Meter faster than others, i.e. Zero fully recharges their Esper Meter when using their Ultimate. Other characters may take a lot more time to do so, however.

This means you will want to identify which character in your team is the slowest in building up Esper Meter, and use that character to parry enemy attacks, as parrying will let them fill their meter much faster, while the others end up building their meter through their skills, Ultimates, or because they have the highest field uptime.

Once you have the trio setup ready to go, simply swap between the character, letting them do their Esper attacks, and then make use of the damage amplification or ult energy generation effects with characters that can nuke the enemy.

Esper Cycle Example
  • Your team is Mint, Zero, Hathor, and a supporting character.
  • You begin by building Esper Meter, with Zero being able to generate a full meter from their Ultimate.
  • You start your combo by playing as Zero or Mint, swapping to Hathor for her Esper attack.
  • You then swap to Zero, which will cause the Remora effect on enemies.
  • You then swap to Mint, spawning a Blossom, which will start attacking the enemy.
  • This will trigger the Charge effect. Whenever the boss gets hit by one of the Blossoms now, you will generate large amounts of Ultimate Energy for the on-field character of your choosing.

Character-Specific Esper Passives

While this system is already quite complex at this point, there is one more layer to it. Almost every character in the game has a passive effect (Support Skill) linked to them, that further boosts the effectiveness of an Esper Cycle skill or effect. These can range from duration to damage increases, or even increasing the total cap of any given effect.

These passive effects also stack with one another. I.e. you can use Jiuyuan, Nanally, and Mint together, each of them having their own passive effect buffing the Blossoms from the Anima+Cosmos Esper Cycle. Even if you only use one of them to trigger the Blossoms themselves, all three of their passives will apply if they are in your team, for a combined effect of:

  • Jiuyuan: Spawns one additional Blossom per cycle, and increases the cap to 6.
  • Nanally: Deals 10 additional small hits of damage for each Blossom spawned, and increases their attack rate.
  • Mint: Increases the AoE of all your Blossoms.

With all of these effects working together, even teams focusing on a single element can be quite powerful as a result, focusing more on individual effects being buffed by passives, instead of triggering as many trio-cycles as possible.
