Legacy Loot Mode in Battle for Azeroth

Recommended Posts

Transmog collectors and the community are not particularly happy with personal loot rules used in leveling dungeons since Patch 7.3.5 launch. Blizzard will be reverting the change back in Battle for Azeroth by activating something called "legacy loot mode".

How Will Legacy Loot Mode Work?

  • The loot mode will activate automatically upon entering a dungeon or raid that's trivial for you (your character is 10+ levels higher than the dungeon or raid's intended level).
  • The number of items dropped by bosses will be the same as it would have been if you were in a full party or raid.
  • All items on the loot table will have a chance to drop, regardless of your set Loot Specialization.
  • Loot will be tradable and split among members of your party or raid.

You can learn more about transmog in our section!

Since the Patch 7.3.5 change to use personal loot rules in leveling dungeons, we’ve heard a lot of feedback from Transmog hunters concerned about how this has affected the ability to collect appearances from older content. We hear you, and agree it’s a problem, so we’ve been working on a more robust solution for Battle for Azeroth.

Once these updates are implemented, entering a dungeon or raid that is trivial for you (i.e.: your character is 10 or more levels higher than the dungeon or raid’s intended level) will activate a “legacy loot mode.” That loot mode will work like this:

  • The number of items dropped by bosses will be the same as it would have been if you were in a full party. So if you’re in a 5-player dungeon, you’ll get 5 players’ worth of loot.
  • For raids with a flexible raid size (such as Raid Finder), this will act as though there were 20 players in the raid.
  • All items on the loot table will have a chance to drop, not just the ones that are designated for your spec.
  • If you have multiple players in the group, the loot will be split among those players, but be tradeable. For example, if you’re clearing with one other player and kill a boss that should drop 4 items, you’ll each be able to pick up two items and trade them between each other if you like.

While the personal loot change was a key part of what allowed us to expand leveling dungeons to encompass a wider range of levels, and we’re happy with it in that environment, we recognize that it’s not a great experience for those who enjoy clearing older content for transmog, and hope that these changes will make that more enjoyable once they’re complete.

Thanks again for all of the feedback!

The thing I'm the most impressed and happy for here is Blizzard's recent initiative to take responsibility and make every attempt to set things right. That's really one of the best qualities any gaming company (and heck, any company in general) could possibly have, and many lack it. A true reason why Legion was so successful certainly comes down to this, and how Blizzard has changed to meet the needs of the playerbase.

I have been suggesting this since the xmog system launched. But once again, they botched it up.

Rings, trinkets, and other similar items still hamper the player's ability to collect the items effectively.
Items need to be unlockable to all characters regardless of which toon gets the item.
Dungeons and Raids should be dropping the max amount of items possible. I think Blackwing Descent drops like 10 to 12 items?. Whereas KZ still drops a mediocre 2-3 items. (Took me about 1 friggin years to get the Warrior's t4 glove token).
And no repeats!.

I think/hope Blizzard will address this too. Will be a hidden feature as it's hard to promise that rng will be gone and yet keep looting still exciting.

Actually it would be fairly simple.  Blizzard would just need to set the loot tables during Legacy Loot Mode to drop max items and to remove non-transmog items from those loot tables.

I see some complaints about rings, necklaces, and trinkets still dropping. I would argue that those items are not entirely worthless; they can still be disenchanted and the yield can be sold on the auction house. You may not be able to Tmog them, however they still hold some value. There’s probably some other things blizzard could do to make those items worth keeping.

War Within Alpha should be just around the corner! When do we expect the latest expansion testing to start?
If you've been keeping an eye on the World of Warcraft 2024 roadmap, you're likely excited about what's coming up! According to the roadmap, the War Within Alpha is expected to kick off sometime after Patch 10.2.6, which was released two weeks ago, and before the beginning of Season 4.

Typically, a season lasts 22 weeks. Right now, we're in the 20th week of Season 3, with just about two weeks left. Let's break down the hypothetical timeline:
Season 3 Week 20: Week of March 26 Season 3 Week 21: Week of April 2 Season 3 Week 22: Week of April 9 Season 4 Week 1: Week of April 15 This schedule suggests that the War Within Alpha could potentially launch as early as next week or during the week of April 9.
The most recent news from the War Within camp came on March 27, when Blizzard rolled out a fresh encrypted internal build on the WoW Dev CDN. The internal builds are becoming more and more frequent which indicates Blizzard's ramping up to start testing in the very near future.
Placeholder for tweet 1772901807448052151 In the meantime, we encourage you to check out everything coming in the War Within pre-patch that will release 1 month before the actual expansion.

Executive Producer Holly Longdale teased some upcoming experimental PvE-focused content that Blizzard will soon reveal to the community.
It appears that Plunderstorm isn't the only new mode Blizzard plans to add to WoW this year.
Holly Longdale today teased an upcoming PvE-oriented event that will soon be revealed to us. Holly might be talking about the "Timerunning Pandamonium," expected in Patch 10.2.7.

      Greetings Citizens of Azeroth,
It’s been great seeing so many players taking the plunge into Plunderstorm and we’ve loved seeing all of the stories and feedback as this experimental event evolves. It will be exciting to see some of the community content creators going head-to-head as duos during the Plunderstorm Creator Royale on March 30!  This isn’t the end of the things we want to try in World of Warcraft, however, and we have more in store we can’t wait to show you.
Dragonflight Season 4 is in route as testing begins on the PTR and we’ll have more news to share soon™ on the next experiment we have up our sleeves. We hope those of you who are looking for PvE focused content will enjoy what we’re planning, all while we continue to press forward on development of our next expansion for World of Warcraft— The War Within.
We can’t wait to share with you all the many things the team has been hard at work on.
With gratitude and excitement for what we’ll do together next,
      Holly Longdale
