Vex Crow Reveal: The Witchwood

Recommended Posts

It's the Year of the Raven and we were bound to have a card with the bird itself. And no, there's no real difference between a crow and a raven!

Alliance Esports presented this card on a YouTube video, with Orange making a small appearance.

Screencap from the video

Everyone's first reaction is going to be "Doomsayer lol", but the chance to get it is actually pretty low. Vex Crow can be combined perfectly with cheap spells or spells with reduced mana cost and if you manage to trigger its effect once or twice, it can be pretty great.

However, the card is pretty slow; you'll probably want to play your cheap spells sooner than turn 4 or 5. The effect seems good, but Summoning Stone also worked similarly (and even better, since it benefited from big spells too) and it was a card that never really caught on. Lastly, statwise the Crow is pretty weak: Violet Teacher has a better body and can produce 1/1 tokens, without the RNG effect of maybe getting a Doomsayer or an Ancient Watcher. Aleco likes this card, so I guess I am wrong about it, though! :)

Perhaps we can see Vex Crow in Secret or Tempo Mage, where cheating out low-cost spells or free secrets is easier. What do you guys think? Pay a visit to our Witchwood hub to find out everything you need to know about Hearthstone's latest expansion.

This one's a bit tricky to evaluate! It obviously wants to go in an aggressive or potentially midrange deck, and needs to get at least 1 or 2 triggers to be worthwhile. I think most decks with Sorcerer's Apprentice will likely be okay with this card, but I also wouldn't be surprised if it never saw a lick of play. Tough to know!

My gut says too slow.    By turn 4 for an aggressive mage you should be dumping big threats and starting to ramp up the damage, not trying to combo stuff.    And non-aggressive mage decks don't need the rng 2-costs, which can totally backfire.

Turn 4 Crow, coin, 2/1 thing that makes secrets free, counterspell. Win game.

Seems awkward though, doubt secret mage wants it - they surely read it as 4-mana deal 0 dmg to enemy face...

Violet Teacher is without any doubt stronger and is played very rarely, this can summon Doomsayer, Lorewalk Cho, Ancient Watcher and any other possible detrimental minion, is around level power of Silvermoon Portal a card that never saw play for that reason

I feel this card is good enough to put in the old school style of tempo mage lists, but I don't think this card is near strong enough to push the archtype by itself.  In other words, it isn't a flamewaker.
