Wriothesley Guide and Best Builds for Genshin Impact
Wriothesley is a 5-star Cryo character in Genshin Impact who utilizes massive gauntlets of ice to face off against his opponents, despite being a Catalyst user. Best known for his ability to main DPS on Melt and Freeze teams. Wriothesley packs a solid punch, literally, and has a great toolkit to brawl on the battlefield.
Strengths and Weaknesses
- Powerful Brawler
- Solid Cryo Spreader
- Low Energy Recharge requirements
- Easy to have Elemental Burst every rotation
- Needs a healer typically even at C1
- Shielders are recommended
- Keeping his HP up can be problematic
Wriothesley Main DPS Build
Wriothesley focuses on Cryo damage, with all of his attacks utilizing that element. This means he can instantly spread Cryo on the battlefield and drive several reactions as well as deal out a substantial amount of damage. He has a unique mechanic of sacrificing his HP to amp up his damage during his Elemental Skill, which directly affects his normal attacks and grants him an interruption resistance. These benefits will keep him on the field to do continuous damage, staying in his opponents face the entire time without worry of knock backs. However, it is recommended to have a back up healer despite his first Ascension allowing him to regain Health from Charged Attacks once every 5 seconds.

Wriothesley's signature weapon, Cashflow Supervision, is his best in slot. This weapon grants him an Attack speed buff and a bonus to his Normal and Charged attacks based on his HP changes. This is perfect for him as he drains his own health with Normal attacks and can heal up with his Charged attack. The next alternative is the Tulaytullah's Remembrance, which is nearly on par with his signature weapon. Again, this weapon focuses on Attack Speed and increases his Normal attack damage up to a maximum value of 48%. Lastly, we include the 4-star option, Flowing Purity, which directly increases Wriothesley's Cryo damage and amplifies his maximum HP. Also, at the end of the effect he gains an additional elemental bonus for a limited time.
Wriothesley's Artifact choice is quite straight forward with the Marechaussee Hunter set fitting perfectly into his toolkit and character design. The second best choice is the Blizzard Strayer boosting his CRIT Rate and granting even more if enemies are frozen. Lastly, we need to mention the Shimenawa's Reminiscence set for the great normal and charged attack boost after casting an elemental skill.
A final note about Wriothesley's Energy Recharge requirements must be made. If you want to use his Elemental Burst every other rotation, set his Energy Recharge to around 125%, lowering this value by 10% per Cryo teammate he has. If you want Wriothesley to be able to use his Burst every time, you will need to double this Energy Recharge requirement. While this is possible, it is not recommended, as it takes away from his damage sub stats too much.
Combos and How to Play Wriothesley
As we have mentioned, Wriothesley is solely focused on Cryo damage and has some unique mechanics with his Elemental Skill, Icefang Rush. The skill boosts his Normal attack damage and adds to his interruption resistance while his Health is above 50%, however, his Health decays with each normal attack he does. He can be healed up through his charged attack, but this takes practice and time to master. What we want to aim for is set up an attack combination that can help balance his Health out creating a dire need for healing. To accomplish this there are two main combos we want to use.
- Normal Attack x 3 then a single Charged Attack — this maintains his health quite easily, but can be costly on Stamina and usually only used for a C0 Wriothesley.
- Normal Attack x 5 then a single Charged Attack — this combination works best when is has his C1 constellation, offering him an enhanced Charged Attack. This combination is also favored all the way up to C6.
His Elemental Burst, Darkgold Wolfbite, is fairly straightforward with 5 hits of Cryo damage followed up by an explosion at the end. This has a decent energy cost of 60 and cooldown of 15 seconds, setting up for some great rotational game play. However, this is not the biggest source of his DPS while on-field. Wriothesley’s Normal attack/Charged attack combinations are the biggest component of his damage. This makes leveling his Normal attack talent the most important and simply brawling with him while your teammates add elements or buffs he can interact with is the best way to play him.
Lastly, one of the most commonly asked questions about Wriothesley is whether or not to run a healer with him. The simple answer is running a healer with him makes him feel a lot smoother. His C1 constellation does somewhat eliminate the need for one if you play him properly. For most players, adding Kuki Shinobu or Baizhu will be a great addition for the Elemental Reactions and the added healing will just smooth out any potential missteps.
Wriothesley's Best Team Comps
Wriothesley has a very wide range of teams he can function quite well with, especially Freeze teams which he can play a main role in almost any team.
Wriothesley Freeze Team
Main DPS | Hydro Spreader | Buffer | Healer Support |
---|---|---|---|
Wriothesley | Furina | Kaedehara Kazuha | Charlotte |
Playing this Freeze team is fairly straightforward. Furina is an amazing Hydro spreader making it very easy for this Freeze comp to keep the enemies locked down. We have added Charlotte for her healing abilities and the added CRIT Rate bonus from Cryo Resonance. Kazuha is our buffer in this team and Wriothesley is on-field brawler. There is no set rotation, just keep in mind to have your Elemental abilities constantly spreading on the field to keep your freezes renewed.
Wriothesley Melt Team
Main DPS | Sub DPS | Buffer | Main DPS |
---|---|---|---|
Wriothesley | Kaedehara Kazuha | Bennett |
This Melt team focuses on maximizing Wriothesley’s damage output through Melt reactions. Kazuha is the buffer and will use the Viridescent Venerer set to shred resistances, while we spread Pyro with our Pyro flex slot and Bennett to some degree. All of this Pyro will be ready for Wriothesley to hit with his Cryo attacks to drive our Melt reactions for big damage.
Wriothesley Quicken Team
Main DPS | Dendro Spreader | Electro Spreader/Healer | Hydro Spreader |
---|---|---|---|
Wriothesley | Collei | Kuki Shinobu | Xingqiu |
This Quicken team starts its rotation by getting some solid Freeze reactions from Wriothesley and Xingqiu’s Hydro blades. Then we use Kuki Shinobu to trigger Electro against the frozen targets. Finally, Collei will come on to the field for her great ability to spread Dendro and trigger Quicken on the enemies. The hardest part of this rotation is maintaining your Freezes as you will fast swap through Kuki and Collei using all their elemental abilities on top of each other.
