On this page, you will find the best pre-raid gear for Arcane Mage in TBC Classic.

1.

Arcane Mage Pre-Raid Gear Set

The pre-raid gear lists on this page are considered the to be the best gear you can get outside of raids and follow this stat priority:

  1. Spell Hit rating to cap. That is 76 without Inspiring Presence IconInspiring Presence and Totem of Wrath IconTotem of Wrath, 64 with Inspiring Presence only, 39 with Totem of Wrath only and 26 with both;
  2. Intellect >= Spell Damage;
  3. Spell Haste (25% soft cap);
  4. Spell Crit;
  5. Spirit;
  6. Stamina;
  7. MP5;

Finding the absolute BiS gear each phase strongly depends on your raid dps, mana support and fight lenghts. Many of the options in this pre-raid BiS list are pretty close to each other, especially early on, and we recommend that you make yourself familiar with the Osthyvel Mage Simulation to know which items you really want to go for in slots with multiple options. Even though this step looks time-consuming at first, it can save you a lot of time when you find out that one blue pre-raid BiS item is simming very close to another epic item you would have to farm hours for. Later, in raids, simming helps you to prioritize items that will last you longest first and avoid minor upgrades. While you are simming, you also should see which gems are best for your particular raid situation. Below you find links to the Arcane Mage stats page, the Raid Best in Slot and the Osthyvel Mage TBC sim.

For AoE (=spamming Arcane Explosion IconArcane Explosions), items with Spell Haste are preferred, because reducing your global cooldown basically 'bypasses' the AoE cap, by simply casting more spells in the same time-frame. For bosses, the items from the BiS lists are generally the better choice. Mind Quickening Gem Icon Mind Quickening Gem from Vaelastrasz the Corrupt in Blackwing Lair will be a BiS AoE trinket during the whole expansion.

Arcane Mage Phase 5 / Sunwell Plateau Pre-Raid Best in Slot Table

This pre-raid BiS list will offer around 3 options per item slot, based on how hard/easy they are to come by. Of course there are many more options, but then the pre-BiS list below would be very long, making it harder for you to decide.

  1. (H) Higher difficulty — Expensive to get, or bigger time-investment, but considered best per slot, mostly expensive crafts, long reputation/honor/item farms.
  2. (M) Medium difficulty — Can be farmed with a bit of time investment, or can be luck dependant to get.
  3. (L) Very low difficulty — These items are usually very cheap to buy, from reputation grinds a dutiful Mage will do anyways (assuming Revered required for Heroic Dungeon keys, or Exalted for shoulder enchants), or quest rewards. Because Intellect is such a powerful stat, these items will not necessarily perform far behind the high/medium difficulty items, and you are easily Karazhan ready with them.

There is PvP gear like the Brutal Gladiator set. However, by the time you have the pieces, you will probably have raid pieces in those slots and generally armor pieces are not as contested as weapons. For this reason this pre-raid BiS list does not consider gladiator armor, only weapons (also only Season 2 weapons, because they are free of rating requirements). This list also excludes BoE World boss loot (which is generally very good), because it is usually extremely expensive.
