Tavern Brawl: Battle of the Bans

Recommended Posts

HztWeNs.png

This is a brand new Constructed Tavern Brawl.

In Battle of the Bans, you pick a class and you initially make a deck of four cards. Your opponent bans one of them and then your deck is filled with copies of the remaining three cards.

The "ban phase" happens after the mulligan but before turn one, and will show 3 of your opponent's cards plus a mystery card. If you pick the mystery card to ban, it will be revealed to you. If you have copies of the card your opponent chose to ban in your hand, they will be replaced randomly by your 3 other cards.

To keep things balanced, the following cards have been banned from Battle of Bans: Jade Idol, Ice Block, Time Out!, Patches the Pirate and Whizbang the Wonderful.

The concept of this Tavern Brawl is very interesting. Not only do you need to pick the proper cards that work well together, you also have to keep into account that one of them will get banned. In turn, you also need to be smart with your ban choice.

This Brawl is very similar to Top 3: one of the decks that is really consistent in both of these Brawls is Mech Hunter with Metaltooth Leaper. Jade Shaman seems to be doing well as you get to summon even larger men every consecutive turn. Discardlock is reportedly performing very solidly, as well. A really strong counter-deck includes Holy Wrath and Shirvallah, the Tiger.

As far as bans are concerned, since this Brawl seems to favour aggro decks in general, make sure to ban any taunts your opponent has. Alternatively, you can try a spell-based Mage or Priest deck.

Feel free to share the decks that worked for you in the comments!

Yeah, Pogo-Hopper was the first card to come to my mind too, but indeed you then have to be lucky to not have it in your first hand so that your opponent can't ban it.

Best is to come up with a combination of 4 cards which stay powerful no matter which 3 remain. Typically, 2 cards which generate an effect, and 2 which benefit from it.

That brawl is funny and very open, I like it. Games are fast, I won 6 games (out of 9 tries) in just 1 hour with a Shaman elemental deck. But I have other ideas to experiment with later. Warlock definitely has potential.

Very interesting brawl.

I haven't a good deck yet.

Murloc could be strong too.

I forgot about the ban and created a deck around Pogo-Hopper - yeah well, then he was banned and my deck was useless *g*

MechwarperGalvanizerMetaltooth Leaper, and another low cost mech (I picked Piloted Shredder, but Zilliax is a great option as well). Haven't lost a game, haven't had a game which went past Turn 5. People ban either one of the first two, but the third card is the real threat. Nobody so far seemed to understand it. So, if you see this deck, and you will, ban Metaltooth Leaper.

All in all a diverting but not very interesting brawl. Too often the card to ban is oh-so-obvious! (/kiss Wedge)

Arcane MissilesFrostboltMirror ImageMana Wyrm got me a 7 wins streak. For some reason people always excluded the bolt letting me grow a huge board and overwhelm them easy-peasie... Got stopped by a Warlock using Kobold LibrarianEarthen Ring FarseerVoodoo Doctor and Happy Ghoul. Close match, but he managed to outdraw me and exhaust me at the very end of his deck after healing himself for over 20 hp. Might be worth checking that one out too.

I have to correct myself... The selection of the card to ban has nothing to do with the first hand.

Hello all, I have noticed that sometimes the new tavern brawl, I am only seeing 2 of the 3 cards that are supposed to fill my deck. In one recent game I got at least 10 copies of one card all in a row (I started counting a little bit into that game when that was the only card that I had drawn for a while.)

So I am wondering: Is the deck fill supposed to be equal amounts of the 3 cards? Is it random amounts? Is this just a weird thing that happened to me?

I am somewhat new to hearthstone so I am just trying to understand how it works a bit better. Thanks!

You get 10 copies of each card that isn't banned, and yes you can very well draw all 10 of one of them in a row. The probability is very low, but that's RNG for you.

Thinking about it, it's really weird that we get to mulligan before the opponent bans one of our cards. It really ought to be the other way around.

I've had great results with Counterfeit Coin / Edwin / Shadowstep / Pogohopper. No matter what they ban, you're still usually able to make a 6/6 or 8/8 on the first or second turn.

They should have banned Curious Glimmerroot as well. Having to "guess" which card came from a deck of which you know all cards before the game starts, is pretty silly.

The recently buffed cards are featured in preconstruced decks in this week's Tavern Brawl.
In "Rise of the Mech" you literally only have to click the Brawl button, since you get a random class with a premade deck. Decks are built around cards buffed in the last balance update.
Unlike most Brawls, this one seems to be in Standard format.
As always, you will get a Classic pack as a reward.

The Adventure concludes and there are many rewards to reap for completing it, while you can also unlock Anomaly Mode.
The Dalaran Heist concludes with its fifth and final chapter. Apart from getting the two remaining Heroes, you can also unlock Anomaly Mode once you are done with all chapters.
You can purchase this new chapter as part of the $19.99 complete Dalaran Heist bundle. You can also grab The Underbelly, or other individual chapters, for $6.99 or 700 Gold by purchasing them in the in-game shop.
This final week is special, since there are numerous rewards to get and you can also unlock Anomaly mode.
      Chapter 5 Details

As if the Dalaran Heist hasn't proven long and repetitive enough, Chapter 5 will last even more. The twist for the Kirin Tor Citadel is that it has four extra bosses, therefore each run will have 12 encounters.
      The Heroes
The last two remaining Heroes to be added are Warlock and Paladin.
Tekahn is the Warlock Hero, having the following Hero Powers and starting decks available:

      Hero Powers
Life Tap (2 mana) – Draw a card and take 2 damage. Pain Split (2 mana) – Take 2 damage. Deal 2 damage. The Pact (2 mana) – Take 2 damage. Summon a 2/2 Imp. Starting Decks
Sacrificial – Self-damage + Deathrattles Seeker – Card generation Imp-ressive – Demons Karl/George is the Paladin Hero. He seems to be suffering from insomnia! Here are his Hero Powers and starting decks:

      Hero Powers
Reinforce (2 mana) – Summon a 1/1 Silver Hand Recruit. Backup (2 mana) – Add three 1/1 Silver Hand Recruits to your hand. Boon of Light (2 mana) – Give a friendly minion Divine Shield. Starting Decks
Old Hero – Divine Shield cards Adventure – Buffs! Holy Flames – Secrets + Dragons. Rewards
There are many more rewards this time, since these are the final rewards you will get from the Dalaran Heist. By beating five bosses in Chapter 5 you will receive three Rise of Shadows card packs.
If you've completed all Chapters at least once, you will also get a Golden Classic pack and Golden Zayle, Shadow Cloak (if you didn't prepurchase or haven't crafted him already). We've covered this new Legendary card, which works like Whizbang the Wonderful, in this article.
Finishing all five chapters on Normal gives you the Prize of Shadows card back.

Finishing all five chapters on Heroic gives you the Got Away with It! card back.

      Anomaly Mode
We aren't done, though! After unlocking all five chapters, Anomaly mode becomes available. Anomaly mode adds another random effect that persists through the run to a chapter you've begun.
There are 18 modifiers and we know 16 of them:
Modifier Description Arcane All spells cost 2 less Crying All Battlecries Trigger Twice Dragon Soul When a player casts 3 spells in a turn, that player summons a 5/5 dragon Fishy Murlocs occasionally join the battle Glittering Gain a Treasure after playing high-cost cards Growing Minions gain +1/+1 at the end of their owner's turn Gorged Both players start with two extra cards and Mana Crystals Hallucinating Both players start with 10 Hallucinations in their deck Infused Summoning minions will give them Taunt, Divine Shield, Rush, or Windfury at random Nesting When a minion is played, it gains "Battlecry: Summon a 1/1 copy of this minion" Ogreish All minions have a 50% chance to attack the wrong enemy Rattling All Deathrattles trigger twice Reductive At the end of each player's turn, reduce the cost of cards in their hand by 1 Refreshing At the end of each player's turn, the player draw until they have 5 cards in hand. A Q&A took place in the Russian official forums and some interesting tidbits of information were revealed, like Vanish being a candidate for the Hall of Fame.
u/mawilek has kindly translated and summarised the most important points from this Q&A. In short, Trolden (who is also a Community Manager for Russia) requested some questions from the community and he posted the answers the day before yesterday.
Here is what you need to know:
Vanish is a HoF candidate. That's still not final, but they are even thinking to move Vanish to the Hall of Fame before the rotation in April.
There are no plans to move Toki, Time-Tinker or Whizbang the Wonderful back to standard after rotation. But they will continue experimenting with this kind of things.
Zayle, Shadow Cloak's decks are to be reviewed only once after rotation and maybe in case of significant nerfs (you can find our extensive article on Zayle here)
26 epics in RoS was an error. They are planning to continue printing 27 epics per set in future
Adventures: It takes about 2 weeks to create and balance Heroic mode after Normal mode is ready
Still no information on future PVE formats, but they have huge plans for those and looking for any kind of feedback for The Dalaran Heist.
They are probably going to keep the Dalaran Heist monetization model for future single player content. Of course, it will still be available to buy with Gold.
For those of you who know Russian, you can find the entire Q&A (which probably contains more answers) here.
