Warlocks are the masters of the dark arts, who draw power from curses, Shadow magic and summoned demons. They can wear enemies down with powerful DoTs, command demons with unique offensive and defensive abilities, and bring some of the strongest utility.
Comprehensive Guide to Warlock in World of Warcraft: Forever
Warlocks have always been one of the most unique classes in World of Warcraft, and
that's not changing in World of Warcraft: Forever. Instead of relying on traditional
magic, they draw power from demons, curses, shadow magic, and even their own health.
Abilities like
Fear,
Life Tap,
Curse of Recklessness,
and Drain Hope are a big part of what makes the class feel different from
other casters, while their summoned demons give Warlocks extra tools for dealing damage,
controlling enemies, surviving dangerous situations, and even granting them powerful
buffs.
Warlocks also bring some of the most recognizable and helpful utility in the game.
You can resurrect a fallen Raid or Party member with
Create Soulstone, summon any party or raid member
with
Ritual of Summoning, and give players an extra emergency heal with
Create Healthstone. Warlocks bring two powerful debuffs with
Curse of Recklessness and
Curse of the Elements. Thanks to the new
changes, Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom are no longer Curses. This
means Warlocks can finally cast those powerful DoTs while keeping up their designated Curse.
WoW Forever keeps that Classic Warlock foundation intact, while making substantial
changes to all three talent trees, resulting in a much stronger version of the Classic
Warlock we've grown accustomed to. Affliction has a much stronger focus on
damage-over-time (DoT) and Drain spells with its new Drain Hope capstone talent.
Demonology puts significantly more emphasis on buffing and fighting alongside your demons
with its new
Demonic Pact capstone talent, and Destruction leans towards
setting everything on fire with its hard-hitting
Conflagrate and the addition
of
Incinerate.
Several formerly talent-gated spells have also moved into the baseline Warlock toolkit,
while new talents and abilities give each specialization a much clearer identity than it
had in the original WoW Classic. The best part is that there is no longer any need to endlessly
spam
Shadow Bolt.
I spent roughly 12 hours playtesting Warlock at BlizzCon 2026 on the level 38 demo build, testing all three talent trees, the available demons, new pet controls, and as many spell and talent interactions as possible. I also checked the Warlock trainer all the way through level 60 to see which spells and ranks are currently planned for later levels. Everything on this page reflects that hands-on build and the information available at BlizzCon, so numbers, talents, spell ranks, and even entire mechanics can still change before release.
This guide will be updated constantly throughout beta and after World of Warcraft: Forever launches. If you are planning to play Warlock, make sure to check back often as Blizzard continues tuning the class and the full level 60 game becomes available.
Warlock Specializations
Warlock has three specializations in WoW Forever: Affliction, Demonology, and Destruction. All three are damage dealers, but the new talent trees push them much further into their own identities. Affliction is built around damage-over-time effects and Drain spells while Demonology heavily rewards fighting alongside an active demon, significantly buffing both the Warlock and their pet and Destruction mixes hard-hitting Fire and Shadow spells with new critical-strike and cleave tools.
- Affliction — Affliction has changed the most from the original Classic Warlock.
Damage-over-time effects can now critically strike, Bane of Agony and
Bane of Doom are now Banes and no longer compete with your normal Curse slot.
New talents heavily buff
Drain Soul during the execute phase and make the new
Drain Hope Affliction's filler spell. Affliction is much less about
simply applying a Curse before spamming
Shadow Bolt and much more about
maintaining your DoTs and balancing your drains. - Demonology — Demonology puts far more emphasis on sacrificing a demon and
keeping a separate demon active thanks to the new
Demonic Pact talent. Your demon
is now a very important part of your damage and survivability. Another big change is that
Demons now scale with your gear. New talents improve pet Health, Mana, threat, utility, and
damage while also rewarding the Warlock for fighting alongside the demon of your choice. - Destruction — Destruction remains the most direct damage specialization,
but its new tree has much stronger interaction between Fire and Shadow spells.
Conflagrate,
Shadowburn,
Incinerate,
Immolate,
Searing Pain, and
Shadow Bolt all have new talent support, while Bane of Havoc gives Destruction
a completely new cleave tool.
Warlock Changes in WoW Forever
Changes to Warlock Race Choices
Warlocks have five playable races in WoW Forever. Human and Gnome remain available on the Alliance, while Orc and Undead return on the Horde alongside the newly added Troll Warlock. Every race also received major racial changes, including several new active abilities that can directly affect Warlock gameplay. The racial decision is much closer than it's ever been in Classic.
It is too early to tell which race is the clear winner based on our BlizzCon testing.
The racial changes give Humans 2% spell critical strike chance while using a sword, but
you must keep a sword equipped for the racial to provide any benefit. The Gnome racial
Expansive Mind now grants 5% Mana instead of Intellect, making the two races much
closer than before. Gnomes also bring the new Eureka! racial.
Horde is also up in the air, with Undead, Orc, and Troll all bringing very strong racials.
Blood Fury remains a very strong choice for damage, and the new racial
Shatter Curse brings some curse and magic protection. Undead get the very powerful
racial Touch of the Grave, making all your spells have a 5% chance to drain up to 5%
of your maximum Health from the target. If this can proc from all of your DoT ticks and
has no ICD, then it would be incredibly strong. Troll brings the infamous
Berserking,
which is very strong however, DoTs, drains, and channeled spells are not affected by the cast
speed. It would still be great for Destruction.
When speaking to the developers, they mentioned that their goal with racials is to have them be close to each other so players are free to choose their favorite race. That's exactly what we suggest as well, at least until we can get some more testing in beta and get sims up. For now, try all races in the beta and see which one you feel is better. These rankings are still preliminary and could change significantly throughout beta as racials and class balance are tuned and as we see how the specializations perform at a higher level.
- Troll — Troll is an entirely new Warlock race in WoW Forever.
Berserking increases spellcasting speed by 10% for 10 seconds, making
it a potentially strong offensive cooldown for Destruction builds, whereas it's not as
strong for the other two builds and is particularly weak for Affliction, since it relies on
drains, channels, and DoTs.
Rapid Regeneration is a channeled racial that
restores 50% of maximum Health over 6 seconds, although moving, taking another action,
or receiving damage cancels it. Trolls also gain
Beast Slaying, increasing
damage against Beasts by 5%, and
Regeneration, allowing 10% of normal
Health regeneration to continue during combat. - Orc —
Blood Fury now increases your Spell Power by
10% for 15 seconds, finally giving Warlocks a massive buff from the racial.
Shatter Curse is also a powerful new defensive, removing all Curses and
Banes, granting immunity to them, and reducing all Magical damage taken by 15% for 8
seconds.
Axe Specialization grants 1% critical strike chance with all
spells and abilities while wielding an axe. The problem is that Warlocks cannot use axes
of any kind.
Hardiness now reduces the duration of Stun effects by 20%
instead of providing the massive Stun resist chance seen in the original Classic, which is a
significant reduction to its PvP strength. - Undead — Undead retains much of its familiar PvP identity, although
several racials have changed.
Will of the Forsaken still removes Charm,
Fear, and Sleep effects, but no longer provides immunity afterward.
Cannibalize
now regenerates 7% of total Health and 7% of total Mana every 2 seconds for 10 seconds
while consuming a nearby Humanoid or Undead corpse.
Underwater Breathing
allows you to remain underwater 300% longer, while the new Touch of the Grave
gives spells and attacks a 5% chance to drain Health from the target, up to 5% of your
maximum Health. - Human — Human receives some substantial racial changes in WoW Forever.
The new Will to Survive racial instantly removes all Stun effects on a 3-minute
cooldown, while
Perception retains its familiar ability to dramatically
increase stealth detection for 20 seconds.
Sword Specialization is
particularly interesting for Warlocks, granting 2% spell critical strike chance while
using a sword.
The Human Spirit continues to increase Spirit by 5%. Human
is considerably more competitive for Warlock than it was in the original Classic, especially
if the Best in Slot weapon is a sword. - Gnome — Gnomes still have their life-saving
Escape Artist,
which removes all movement-impairing effects and now also grants immunity to them for 3
seconds. The biggest addition is Eureka!, a new 2-minute cooldown that
causes your next three damaging abilities to cost 50% less Mana and deal 10% increased
damage.
Expansive Mind has also been redesigned to increase your maximum
Mana by 5% rather than Intellect.
Engineering Specialization continues
to improve the reliability of all Engineering devices.
Remember that these racial abilities come from the BlizzCon 2026 demo build and are still subject to change during beta. Racial balance can have a major effect on both PvE and PvP performance, so we will continue updating this section as Blizzard adjusts their values and interactions before launch. Make sure to check back often as we go into beta.
Warlock Spell Changes in WoW Forever
The level 38 demo still contained many familiar Warlock staples, including
Corruption,
Fear,
Life Tap,
Shadow Bolt,
Immolate,
Searing Pain,
Drain Life,
Drain Soul,
Drain Mana,
Hellfire,
Rain of Fire,
and the traditional summoned demons. WoW Forever is not replacing the Classic Warlock spellbook
so much as expanding it, making the class more fun to play.
Warlocks retain most of their recognizable Classic spellbook in WoW Forever and still feel like that Classic Warlock we're used to. During roughly 12 hours of playtesting, I was able to test the level 38 Warlock spellbook and also visit a Warlock trainer to inspect the currently planned spell progression all the way through level 60.
The BlizzCon build retains the familiar Classic system where certain spells granted from
your talents receive additional ranks from the Warlock trainer as you level. The level 60
trainer gave us a very useful look at the later ranks available for spells such as
Siphon Life,
Shadowburn,
Conflagrate,
Incinerate and
more.
- Bane of Agony — This DoT still works the same and ramps up
however, it is no longer a Curse, meaning you can maintain Bane of Agony while
still using a separate
Curse of the Elements or
Curse of Recklessness
on the same target. - Bane of Doom — The level 60 trainer showed Bane of Doom as part of the Warlock's spellbook at later levels. It is also no longer a Curse and explodes for a large amount of damage after 60 seconds, with a chance to spawn a Doomguard when it ends.
Siphon Life — This still works the same way as it always has,
dealing damage and healing you for the damage dealt. The damage was really low in
comparison to the rest of the DoTs.- DoTs can critically strike — This is one of the largest overall Warlock mechanical changes. DoTs can now critically strike, creating entirely new interactions with Critical Strike and several of the redesigned Affliction talents.
Create Spellstone — This got a major rework and now grants
1% Haste and Spell Power. At level 38, it granted 14 Spell Power. This is also no
longer in the wand slot and is used as a weapon oil. This is a significant improvement.
Create Firestone — Much like its counterpart, this also got
a major rework and now grants 1% Critical Strike Chance and Critical Strike damage.
At level 38, it granted 14 Critical Strike damage. This is also no longer in the
wand slot and is used as a weapon oil.
Warlock demons now scale with the Warlock's stats, making them deal much more damage
and become much tankier. Demons generally seemed to deal more damage, with the
Summon Succubus dealing an incredible amount of damage and being by far the best pet for
DPS. At the tested level, the Imp ran out of Mana rather quickly. The
Summon Felhunter performed somewhere between the Imp and
Summon Succubus while
still bringing its infamous
Spell Lock. The
Summon Voidwalker generated
an extraordinary amount of threat. At times, it out-threatened the tank and forced the tank
to fight for the enemies' attention. All in all, the demons seem to be in a good spot so far
and only get better if you go down the Demonology
tree.
DoTs and Drain channels are not currently affected by Haste in this current build. Haste still affects normal spellcasting, but this considerably changes its current value for Affliction compared to systems where Haste affects periodic damage.
Warlock demons now have access to a Move To command, allowing the Warlock to manually send their demon to a chosen location. This has a 100-yard range, allowing you to place your demon pretty much anywhere you want. This is a major improvement over traditional Classic pet control and makes precise positioning significantly easier in PvE and especially in PvP.
Remember that all of these spell changes come from the BlizzCon 2026 demo and remain subject to change throughout beta. We will continue updating this section as spell ranks, coefficients, Mana costs, and mechanics are adjusted on the road to launch.
Warlock Specialization Changes and Additions
All three Warlock talent trees have been heavily reworked for WoW Forever. The following sections cover the most important changes from the current build. These trees are still subject to tuning and redesign throughout beta.
Affliction
Affliction received the most obvious identity shift in this current build. Instead
of functioning mainly as a curse bot for raid debuffs and spamming
Shadow Bolt,
the new tree is built around maintaining multiple DoTs and then amplifying them with
Drain spells. Below is a list of all the new or reworked Affliction talents.
Improved Corruption — Still reduces the cast time of
Corruption to make it instant, but now also buffs
Corruption damage by 10%.
Suppression — Now improves hit chance for all spells (1% per point) and also reduces threat (4% per point).- Improved Bane of Agony — Increases the damage of Bane of Agony by up to 10%.
- Malediction — Increases all periodic damage dealt by Warlock spells by up to 5% (1% per point).
- Malevolence — Increases the critical effect chance of Shadow spells by up to 5%.
Soul Harvesting — Allows your Mana to regenerate at 50% of its normal speed while casting spells and increases your Mana regeneration by an additional 50%.- Drain Hope — Deals Shadow damage every second for 6 seconds and increases the Warlock's other Shadow DoT effects on that target by 10% for 6 seconds.
- Improved Drains — Increases
Drain Life and
Drain Soul by 2% for each Affliction effect active on the target (capped at 6%). The
Drain Soul bonus is tripled against enemies below 20% Health, giving Affliction a much stronger execute phase.
Soul Siphon — Increases how quickly
Drain Life and
Drain Soul deal damage (17%/34%/51%), at the cost of reducing the healing received from
Drain Life.
Pandemic — Increases the critical-strike damage bonus of
Corruption, Bane of Agony, Bane of Doom,
Drain Soul,
Drain Life,
Siphon Life, and Drain Hope by up to 100%.
Demonology
Demonology is much more focused on the demon itself. Rather than simply taking defensive talents on the way to a few major bonuses, the WoW Forever tree repeatedly rewards you for keeping a pet active and directly improves both the demon's and the Warlock's damage. Below is a list of all the new or reworked Demonology talents.
- Fel Vitality — Increases the maximum Health and Mana of the
Summon Imp,
Summon Voidwalker,
Summon Succubus,
Summon Incubus, and
Summon Felhunter by up to 15%, while also increasing the Warlock's maximum Mana. - Demonic Energies — Heals your pet for a percentage of the spell damage you deal (8%/16%) and transfers up to 100% of the Mana gained from
Life Tap to your summoned demon. - Demonic Knowledge — Increases spell damage and healing while you have an active demon.
- Demonic Aegis — Increases the effectiveness of
Demon Skin and
Demon Armor. - Demonic Brand — Reduces the Warlock's threat from
Searing Pain (17%/34%/51%) and causes the pet's next two attacks against the target to generate high threat and deal additional Fire or Shadow damage. This gives the
Summon Voidwalker a much stronger way to hold enemies while out in the world questing.
Decimation — Reduces the cooldown of
Soul Fire by 45%/90%. In addition, when you cast
Shadow Bolt or
Searing Pain on any enemy below 35% Health, you deal 6% more damage;
Soul Fire's cast time is reduced by 40%; and it costs no
Soul Shard.
Demonic Sacrifice — This talent was slightly reworked so that sacrificing the
Summon Imp grants a 15% buff to all Shadow damage, while sacrificing the
Summon Succubus increases Fire damage by 15%. This allows you to sacrifice your Imp for the Shadow damage bonus and still use a
Summon Succubus for more Shadow damage from the
Master Demonologist talent.
Demonic Pact — Allows the
Demonic Sacrifice effect to remain when a different demon is summoned. Re-summoning the sacrificed demon still cancels the effect.
Destruction
Destruction keeps that hard-casting nuke feel of Classic Warlock, but the new tree does
much more to connect its Fire and Shadow spells. The result is a specialization that still
uses familiar abilities such as
Shadow Bolt and
Immolate and
Conflagrate, but has more reasons to rotate between different schools and react
to critical strikes and execute windows. Below is a list of all the new or reworked
Destruction talents.
Incinerate — The new capstone talent and main Fire spell. This does decent damage and deals 25% additional damage to targets affected by
Immolate.
Aftermath — This now increases the initial damage of
Immolate and causes
Conflagrate to daze the target.
Ruin — Increases the critical-strike damage bonus of Destruction spells.- Agonizing Flames — Increases
Searing Pain's critical strike chance while also increasing the damage of all Destruction spells. - Fire and Brimstone — Increases the critical strike chance of
Conflagrate by up to 24%. - Bane of Havoc — After applying this to an enemy, 15% of the damage you deal to all other targets will also be dealt to that Baned target, giving Destruction a strong two-target cleave option.
- Shadow and Flame — Links the two damage schools together:
Conflagrate increases Shadow damage, while
Shadowburn increases Fire damage. At maximum rank,
Conflagrate no longer consumes
Immolate and
Shadowburn will automatically refund its
Soul Shard, making it essentially free. - Molten Skin — Reduces all damage taken by up to 10%, giving Destruction a substantial defensive talent option.
One of the more interesting things about the BlizzCon build is what was not there:
Chaos Bolt was not shown. Instead,
Incinerate is part of the new Fire toolkit,
while
Conflagrate and
Shadowburn have much deeper talent support.
That gives Destruction Warlocks their own Classic-style direction rather than simply
copying a later expansion's Warlock rotation.
Classic Warlock Talents Removed in WoW Forever
WoW Forever removed a considerable number of talents from the original Classic Warlock trees, eliminating several older passive bonuses and folding some of their functionality into new or redesigned talents. The following Classic talents no longer appear in the WoW Forever trees:
Improved Drain Soul
Fel Intellect
Devastation
Improved Healthstone
Grim Reach
Improved Firebolt
Dark Pact
Improved Curse of Weakness
Fel Stamina
Improved Immolate
Improved Searing Pain
Improved Drain Mana
Emberstorm
Improved Subjugate Demon
Improved Curse of Agony
Improved Spellstone
Improved Drain Life
Improved Lash of Pain
Improved Curse of Exhaustion
Improved Firestone
Many of these removals make a ton of sense alongside the broader redesign of the class, especially in Affliction and Demonology where several older talents have been replaced by stronger effects that interact directly with DoTs, Drain spells, and summoned demons.
What Could Still Change for Warlock in WoW Forever?
The most important thing to remember is that this is the first version of the class. I was able to spend roughly 12 hours playing Warlock at BlizzCon, but the demo stopped at level 38. The level 60 trainer gave us a useful look at later spells and ranks, but we still have not been able to play a complete level 60 build with finished gear, full talent points, raid encounters, or final class tuning. The developers said to expect changes, so check back often as we step into beta.
Pet balance is one of the clearest areas to watch during beta. The
Summon Succubus
was extremely strong in the demo, the
Summon Voidwalker generated huge amounts of
threat, and the
Summon Imp struggled badly with both damage and Mana. Demonology
is much more dependent on its active pet than it was in original Classic, so even small
pet-tuning changes could have a large impact on which builds end up being competitive.
A massive quality-of-life change that all Warlocks have at the top of their wish lists is a solution for Soul Shards. Warlocks are still stuck wasting a great deal of bag space carrying shards around. It would be amazing if they could stack.
Affliction also has several mechanics that will need real level 60 testing before we
can judge them properly. Critical striking DoTs,
Pandemic, Drain Hope,
Improved Drains, and the new
Drain Soul execute bonuses all scale together in
ways that cannot easily be evaluated from a level 38 build. Destruction is in a similar
position: Bane of Havoc, Shadow and Flame,
Incinerate,
Conflagrate, and
Shadowburn create a much deeper toolkit than
original Classic, but the final rotation will depend heavily on tuning and the encounters
available at level 60.
Blizzard can still change talents, spell coefficients, ranks, pet scaling, Mana costs, and even entire mechanics throughout beta. We will be updating this guide constantly as the beta develops and again when WoW Forever launches, so make sure to check back regularly for the newest Warlock information.
