Compendium of Marksmanship Hunter Information for the World of Warcraft: Forever Beta
Hunter is your classic ranger archetype, setting traps and dealing damage from afar while relying on your powerful animal companion to deal unrelenting damage and keep your enemy's focus. Marksmanship is the specialization that heavily invests into your own ranged damage, enabling you to deal devastating hits from further away than anyone else. While you still have a pet, traps, and other tools to rely on, ultimately your strongest asset is going to be the massive hits that bombard your enemies.
Marksmanship Hunters have a very similar play style in World of Warcraft Forever compared
to what Hunters had in Classic, but with some exciting new upgrades that double down on your
identity as a marksman. Marksmanship has a new pinnacle talent,
Sniper Shot,
which is an extremely powerful shot on a 4-second cooldown that will enable you to deal
more burst damage than ever before, but only when you have the time and space to see it through.
Leveling Information
While Marksmanship does not have access to most of its later talents and abilities
at Level 20, Hunter still has at least 80% of its core power just from access to a pet, basic
attack, and then
Aimed Shot and
Multi-Shot.
For the first few levels until you tame your first pet at level 10 try to focus on maximizing
the number of
Auto Shots that you can get off before a target gets in range,
then switching over to melee and using
Raptor Strike. The more ranged
attacks you get in, the faster and safer your kills will be.
Once you can access your pet at Level 10, your leveling strategy should turn towards maximizing
your up-time, always killing something in the direction of your next quest. Allow your pet to
attack first to generate threat before starting your own auto shots from range. If you ever find yourself
pulling threat away from your pet, force yourself to wait a bit more before attacking since swapping
over to melee will only reduce your kill speed early on; you want to be permanently ranging
as much as possible. Otherwise, use your mana pool on things like
Serpent Sting
and
Aimed Shot as you can. For multiple enemies, you can use
Multi-Shot
instead.
Finally, maximize your use of
Aspect of the Cheetah. While you never want
to get hit with this active, it should be up 99% of the time while you exist in the world especially
when we will not have access to mounts before level 40. In combat you will always want
Aspect of the Hawk to be up due to
Deadly Aspects, as this
is your strongest combat buff.
Best Races For Marksmanship Hunter
Put simply, there are no weak choices for races after the reworked racials in World of Warcraft Forever. However, for Alliance, Humans will take the slight edge due to the power of their on-use ability to break stuns in PvP and the consistent 2% crit chance you can get through their sword specialization. For Horde, Tauren is the strongest option in due to the combination of an AoE stun, extra health, passive hit chance, and most importantly the Plainsrunner buff. Taurens can gain up to 30% movement speed by continuously running, which Hunters can abuse to kite enemies at range. Tauren are exceptionally powerful for leveling and overall for Hunter in general; this is the best race overall.
Leveling Professions
Ultimately, your professions are going to be defined by what you want to value most, whether it's Engineering for valuable PvP items, Alchemy to craft consumables for raiding, or even something like Mining just to gather materials to sell for gold. Every profession has value in some way.
That being said, one of the strongest and most natural combinations early on for Hunter will be Skinning and Leatherworking. Hunters can utilize Skinning perfectly while leveling due to how easily you can kill enemies sequentially with no down-time. Moreover, you can command your pet to start to attack the next enemy while you skin the previous target, giving you something to do while your pet builds threat. You can gather plenty of materials while leveling, which can then be used with Leatherworking to craft armour both while leveling and in the end-game, including some of the strongest entry end-game pieces. We also know that there are hundreds of new recipes to learn, which means there will inevitably be valuable new gear to find and craft with Leatherworking.
Level 20 Talent Build
At level 20 you only get 11 talent points
total, which limits your options for going deep into
any one tree. This also means that you have more
freedom with taking points in any specialization.
For Hunters, the single best starting talent is
Deadly Aspects. However, this build
above instead focuses in on going 11 points deep
into Marksmanship to get
Lone Wolf.
This build is not a good general play build. If you
want a far better general build for just existing
in the world, you should use the Beast Mastery
build at this level instead to take Deadly
Aspects and
Pathfinding. If you
want to go deep into Marksmanship,
the best use-case for it is for Dungeons,
specifically to maximize your AoE damage.
At low level, you should never take
Lone Wolf unless your goal is
to maximize your cleave and AoE damage in dungeons. If all you care about is dungeon performance,
then an extra 20% damage is excellent to buff your
Multi-Shot.
Marksmanship Hunter Spells and Rotation
The Hunter rotation is incredibly simple early on, almost entirely relying on the strength of
Auto Shot to kill enemies. First and foremost, always have
Aspect of the Hawk
active before engaging with something unless you are actively kiting it away and need the speed bonus
of
Aspect of the Cheetah. Before level 10, you should also focus on moving backwards
between Auto Shots since you want to maximize the number of times you attack a target from range
before it reaches your dead-zone and gets into melee.
- Put
Hunter's Mark up on your target before combat. - Command your pet to attack your target first, with its abilities on auto-cast.
- Once your pet damages and attacks your target, start with
Serpent Sting.
Aimed Shot on cooldown.- Continue to
Auto Shot your target. - If you ever pull aggro away from your pet, use
Disengage. - If you have extra mana, use
Arcane Shot. Otherwise stick to
Auto Shot.
As a final reminder, the majority of a Hunter's power comes from both you and your pet's basic attacks.
Even if you are out of mana, it will always be more efficient to just attack the next target and
regenerate your mana slowly while using basic attacks. Prioritize using
Mend Pet
to heal your pet along with
Serpent Sting to efficiently utilize your mana.
Level 20 Gear, Stat Priority, and Consumables
At Level 20, you likely will not have much choice in terms of what gear to go for. Instead of focusing on specific pieces, generally you should go for the highest level items that follow the stat priority listed below. World of Warcraft Forever also has completely revamped the stats offered on gear across the game, so we do not have complete information yet on what gear is available.
Stat Priority
The stat priority boils down to two things: get the highest damage weapon possible and get as much Agility as possible. Beyond that, look for Spirit, Intelligence, and Stamina wherever you can but without sacrificing Agility. Hit and Crit chance are valuable, but are also extremely rare or impossible to find on any low level pieces of gear.
Consumables
While leveling, the most important consumable are going to be the highest level food you can eat for health regeneration, water for mana regeneration, and health potions as an emergency defensive button. While you can look into elixirs and other buff foods, we do not know what all is available at this time. Your best bet will be browsing elixirs on the auction house to see what is available, or to wait for the guide to be updated once we have more information.
