Welcome to our Enhancement Shaman Melee DPS guide for WoW Forever, tailored for PvE content. Here, you will learn how all you need to know to play the Shaman class as Enhancement Melee DPS. Click the links #below to navigate the guide or read this page for a short introduction.

1.

Compendium of Enhancement Shaman Information for the World of Warcraft: Forever Beta

Enhancement is the melee specialization for Shaman, specializing in extremely powerful group support. They exist as a battle-mage, mixing powerful melee strikes with potent spells, weaving the two together to deal with enemies. Forever also brings forward Maelstrom Weapon Icon Maelstrom Weapon, giving it a way to hybridize the two without interrupting your melee attacks. While it's one of the specs that needed design help going into Forever, a lot of the talents shown look to improve its Mana economy & ability cooldowns, so Windfury Weapon Icon Windfury Weapon can shine again alongside its Windfury Totem Icon Windfury Totem group buff counterpart.

As a quick disclaimer, the performance overview will be iterated on as more is seen from Forever's Beta cycle, since a lot is changing!

Tentatively average, relying on support tools Enhancement had some problems with initial design in Classic for its own gameplay, relying instead on standing out as a support spec. Much of what's been shown of the talent tree seems to target improvements to that very problem though, so as we see more from Beta, we'll get a picture of where it lands.
2.

Leveling Information

Since Forever is limited to level 20 at the start of the Beta, Enhancement's experience will likely be quite skinny without reaching deeper into the tree. The spec can still jump into combat quickly, having a lot of instant damage while being able to keep itself healthy with healing spells like Healing Wave Icon Healing Wave if things get dangerous. Since professions are likely seeing big changes, it's hard to say for sure what you should use, but Skinning & Leatherworking will give you the tools to craft your own gear and check out the new systems added.

A standout to know about is the change to Improved Ghost Wolf Icon Improved Ghost Wolf, allowing its use indoors. Since there's no access to mounts at level 20, this will make navigating the world much faster once unlocked.

When it comes to races, Orc is the go-to pick for Horde Shaman, bringing Blood Fury Icon Blood Fury, Axe Specialization Icon Axe Specialization, Hardiness Icon Hardiness and the new Shatter Curse. For Alliance on the other hand, the only option available is Dwarf, which has Stoneform Icon Stoneform, Find Treasure Icon Find Treasure, and two new passives - Mace Specialization Icon Mace Specialization & Big Game Hunter. An extra shout-out for the Beta is Tauren, which has Plainsrunning Icon Plainsrunning which may help with exploring early on before mounts are available.

3.

Level 20 Talent Build

With the Beta having a level limit of 20 currently, there's limited options available. Even still, Shamanistic Focus can be reached to lighten the pressure on your Mana pool when using shocks, so is the goal early.

  • Thundering Strikes Icon Thundering Strikes provides bulk Critical Strike early, which will help when pathing deeper into the tree in the full release. While Ancestral Knowledge Icon Ancestral Knowledge has a lot of benefits, availability of Intellect on gear early is likely quite low, and requires deeper points to round it out.
  • Improved Ghost Wolf Icon Improved Ghost Wolf significantly improves your ability to navigate the world early, especially now that it works indoors. While it has no throughput, its benefits are worth it.
  • Mental Dexterity Icon Mental Dexterity enables Intellect as a key stat, and is needed to path deeper into the tree. Improved Lightning Shield Icon Improved Lightning Shield is also an option here, but doesn't lead into key talents later.

Another thing to note is Earth's Grasp Icon Earth's Grasp, which improves Stoneclaw Totem Icon Stoneclaw Totem as an emergency survival tool. Since Thundering Strikes Icon Thundering Strikes doesn't require the full 5 point investment to get deeper, a couple points here may make things more comfortable.

Depending on the availability of Legacy Perk points in the Beta, Talented Icon Talented may also increase the limit all the way to 16 points with the Level 20 cap. This would make reaching Stormstrike Icon Stormstrike possible, which you should grab as soon as you can.

4.

Enhancement Shaman Spells and Rotation

While there's limited tools available with a level cap of 20, there's a few core concepts to keep in mind, plus some extra tools new to Forever. As Beta progresses and see when certain skills are available, we'll expand on this section further:

  • Weapon Imbue & Lightning Shield – Rockbiter Weapon Icon Rockbiter Weapon is your imbuement of choice, unlocked early for bonus Attack Power. Lightning Shield Icon Lightning Shield should also be applied before engaging, refreshing after using a Shock when it expires.
  • Totems – covered more broadly in the section below, but try to have Searing Totem Icon Searing Totem active (repositioning with Totemic Projection Icon Totemic Projection) to enable casts of Fire Nova Icon Fire Nova.
  • Cast Earth Shock Icon Earth Shock whenever available.
  • Cast Fire Nova Icon Fire Nova with an active Fire Totem.
  • Auto-attack until the enemy dies.

Lightning Bolt Icon Lightning Bolt should be used to pull enemies, especially if it's too dangerous to get close. Avoid it otherwise, as it resets your auto-attack swing timer and pauses Mana regen. Healing Wave Icon Healing Wave should also be used if you feel in danger, to recover between enemies to minimize downtime, allowing your natural Mana regen to keep you pulling.

4.1.

Totems

Unique to Shaman, Totems provide a wealth of benefits both offensively and defensively, allowing you to massively aid your group. Dropping a Totem is instant, and has a reduced global cooldown of 1 second instead of 1.5, making it easy to quickly deploy them. With a level cap of 20, three of the four elements are available – Earth, Fire & Water, unlocked through Class quests as you progress.

  • Earth a mix of offensive buffs & defensive utility. Strength of Earth Totem Icon Strength of Earth Totem is a staple, providing bonus Strength to you and your party, while Stoneclaw Totem Icon Stoneclaw Totem can taunt enemies off you if you're in danger. Earthbind Totem Icon Earthbind Totem provides an AoE slow around it if you need to make distance, and Tremor Totem Icon Tremor Totem periodically breaks fears.
  • Fire purely offensive in the Beta, having Searing Totem Icon Searing Totem that attacks your target. Fire Nova Icon Fire Nova has been changed in Forever as well, and instead when cast triggers a pulse around your currently active Fire Totem for AoE damage.
  • Water focus on restorative tools, but only unlock right on the cusp of the level cap. That means only Healing Stream Totem Icon Healing Stream Totem will be available, providing a small amount of healing for you and your party.
  • Air only unlocks at level 30, so won't be available initially. These provide extremely potent group buffs and unique utility, such as Windfury Totem Icon Windfury Totem & Grounding Totem Icon Grounding Totem.

In Forever, there's also two new tools for managing your Totems: Totemic Projection Icon Totemic Projection and Call of the Elements. The first allows you to relocate all of your currently active totems to a nearby location, meaning you don't have to drop fresh ones if you already have a set active. The second allows you to configure a bar of totems that can be dropped all at once, following a 3 second cast, letting you set up quickly.

4.2.

Utility & Unique Tools

On top of its Totem suite, Shaman is known for its vast array of tools to deal with different situations. While the whole toolkit isn't fleshed out at Level 20, it can already start picking up some of these abilities early on:

  • Healing Wave Icon Healing Wave & Lesser Healing Wave Icon Lesser Healing Wave are direct cast healing spells that allow you to keep yourself healthy, or help party members in danger.
  • Purge Icon Purge dispels up to two effects from target enemies.
  • Ancestral Spirit Icon Ancestral Spirit is Shaman's resurrect spell for fallen allies.
  • Ghost Wolf Icon Ghost Wolf shapeshifts you into a wolf with 40% increased movement speed, with a two second cast. This can be made instant (and allows its use indoors) using Improved Ghost Wolf Icon Improved Ghost Wolf.
  • Earth Shock Icon Earth Shock also doubles as an interrupt for enemy spellcasts.
  • Frost Shock Icon Frost Shock slows targets hit for 8 seconds, useful if you need to kite.

The toolkit only gets bigger as the level cap increases, so this section will be added to as we see more of what Forever has to offer beyond the current cap.

5.

Level 20 Gear, Stat Priority, and Consumables

Since Forever was announced to come with significant changes to gear and item philosophy, it's a lot harder to pin down what items are desirable without seeing the content first-hand. Changes to the Talent Tree imply there'll be a much more focused effort on which pieces are worth chasing, so this section will be expanded upon greatly as we see more from the Beta.

5.1.

Stats Explained

Due to some shake-ups in the Talent Tree, there's a bit of guesswork on exactly how valuable stats are. This section comes with a heavy disclaimer that it's speculative, until more is seen from the Beta as a whole. With the level cap of 20 as well, there's a few stats that don't have access to enabling talents, so an endgame priority will likely be quite different:

Item Level
Expertise
Hit
Critical Strike
Strength
Intellect
Agility
Mp5

Weapon DPS remains the biggest factor, so item level on your weapons is always the big thing to chase. Expertise replaces Weapon Skill in Forever, which will reduce your reliance on Hit to reach soft caps. Since the Beta won't have you facing raid bosses though, it's unlikely to be present on lower level gear.

Critical Strike eventually becomes very powerful due to Flurry Icon Flurry and Elemental Devastation Icon Elemental Devastation, but since both are inaccessible at level 20, it doesn't quite reach full potential.

Intellect sees the biggest change in Forever, with both Mental Dexterity Icon Mental Dexterity (available before level 20) & Mental Quickness Icon Mental Quickness later down the line. These together cause it to scale much more directly with abilities (on top of the additional Mana and Spell Crit), likely making it compete with the 2 AP per point of Strength.

Agility still provides extra Crit chance, but with the extra support for Intellect, I think it will likely fall in value. Mp5 can help support Mana needs, but improvements throughout the tree including Shamanistic Focus & Improved Stormstrike/Windfury Weapon Icon Improved Stormstrike likely mean it's a much weaker solution relative to simply getting more Intellect.

5.2.

Consumables

Much like gear, it's unknown how much professions will be altered going into Forever, and how that impacts what you should have on hand for each situation. Due to that, this section will be expanded as more is discovered about Forever.

With that said though, one thing that's always useful to have on hand are some Healing consumables, likely maxing out with Healing Potion Icon Healing Potions until the cap is expanded at a later stage. Keeping a good stockpile of Food & Drink to restore Health and Mana when you're running low also a good habit to have.
