Welcome to our Frost Mage Ranged DPS guide for WoW Forever, tailored for PvE content. Here, you will learn how all you need to know to play the Mage class as Frost Ranged DPS. Click the links #below to navigate the guide or read this page for a short introduction.
Compendium of Spec Class Information for the World of Warcraft: Forever Beta
Frost Mages are the iconic spellcaster built around cold and ice. In a world where Arcane Mages control the flow of mana and Fire Mages carelessly destroy everything in sight, Frost Mages aim to control the battlefield. By using their Frost abilities, they slow and freeze their targets. And if someone finally does get too close, the enemy will find their blades scratching harmlessly against against the Mage's frozen defenses.
If you decide to follow the path of the Frost Mage, your gameplay style will be exactly as described as above. You will be slowing and freezing enemies from afar, taking them down before they even get a chance to strike. You'll have more opportunity to remain mobile compared to your Arcane and Fire counterparts. On top of all that, you will have powerful defensive utility to protect yourself and your allies in a pinch.
In World of Warcraft: Forever, you will find that Frost Mage has been expanded beyond its Classic
counterpart. With the addition of
Ice Lance and
Frostfire Bolt, Frost Mages have new tools
in their kit to deal damage. On top of that, while some other classes' Area of Effect abilities were changed to deal
less damage to larger groups in Forever, our
Blizzard has been untouched. This means Frost Mages will
remain as powerhouses taking down groups of enemies.
Join me on this page, as we dive deep into the spec that this very website's foundations were built on. We'll explore Frost Mage's strengths and weaknesses, as well as advice for leveling, gear priorities, talent builds, and more.
Frost Mage won't top the damage meters, but few specs are as safe or as consistent. We slow, freeze, and outlast everything in our way, making Frost a reliable pick from your first quest to your last dungeon.
Leveling Information
While most of the information provided here is applicible to full release, this guide has been tailored for the WoW: Forever beta's level cap of 20.
Best Race For Frost Mages
For Alliance, the best race for Frost Mage is Gnome.
Escape Artist gives a sorely needed
second escape on top of
Blink. Eureka is a powerful new active racial ability which will
boost your damage of
Ice Lance on a frozen enemy, and help with your mana management.
Expansive Mind
now gives 5% extra mana.
Later on, Gnome's new
Engineering Specialization makes Engingineering devices "more reliable"; but we don't
have the full context of this ability just yet. Historically though, Engineering has been very powerful in Classic.
On the Horde side, Forever has allowed Orcs to can now become Mages. They're built for it too:
Blood Fury
boosts spell power and Shatter Curse and
Hardiness are great additional defensives, particularly for PvP.
Undead's new
Cannibalize change regenerates mana.
Will of the Forsaken also gives an additional CC removal.
But, their new passive Touch of the Grave will give them extra damage procs and lifesteal on cast. Both of these races are
solid picks.
General Leveling Tips
Quests are the primary way to earn experience. Prioritize nearby quests, and take note of when they cluster together, since this is by design. It's a good idea to kill some mobs as you travel to your next quest destination if you've got full mana.
Once you've picked up a good number of quests for a dungeon, it's worth running. In Forever, dungeon experience is intentionally tuned the quest rewards rather than repeated runs. Repeated runs give less experience, but the gear they drop can still speed up your questing.
When logging off for a long period, or switching to another character, it's highly recommended to log out in an inn or a capital city. Whether you're offline or AFK, your character will earn Rested XP that increases the experience gained from killing enemies.
The new campfires in Forever give bonus Rested XP and attribute buffs with an hour cooldown, too. Be sure to visit one as often as you can.
Level 20 Talent Build
Here's our buld for the beta's max Level of 20. We will be spending all 11 points in the Frost tree to unlock
Ice Lance.
On the way, we get
Frostbite for some freeze chance. This will give more opportunities to deal bonus damage with
Ice Lance.
While leveling to 20, keep in mind
Wand Specialization in Arcane got buffed to only two points. Depending on your gear,
it might be worth grabbing this as wands are very powerful in Classic — and Forever should be no different.
Frost Mage Spells and Rotation
For Level 20, we will have limited access to our kit, but still have some options. Spam
Frostbolt until the enemy gets frozen
from the
Frostbite talent, then hit them with
Ice Lance for the bonus damage. Use bonus damage trinkets and abilities
like Eureka to get extra value. Make sure to start at a range so you can get as many
Frostbolts in as possible.
Frost Nova is generally used defensively, but in party situations where everything is safe, can be used to guarantee a freeze
on a target for
Ice Lance too.
In AoE, at Level 20 we unlock
Blizzard, but we don't have enough talent points to invest in
Improved Blizzard just yet.
Still, at 3+ targets we should be able to deal some good damage.
Remember to keep your buffs maintained like
Arcane Intellect and
Frost Armor, but in Forever they have extended durations
so they should be a bit easier to maintain.
Level 20 Gear, Stat Priority, and Consumables
Please note we have little information about how itemization works in Forever, and everything has been changed. The following info is based on what Blizzard have given us until we get our hands on the beta.
Your best gear will almost certainly be the new guaranteed Rare or higher gear availble in the three leveling dungeons: Ragefire Chasm, and the new Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordraeron. Quests have been revamped too to give better rewards, so keep an eye out for strong pieces from them, too.
Food and drink will be important in Forever, with proper cooked food even giving an experience buff. Mages can make food and drink, but with the changes to professions, expect the best food and drink to be available from the Cook profession.
Lastly, don't sleep on chance-to-hit and resource management stats. We don't have the talent points to allocate to resoure management or accuracy talents, and by the looks of things these will be important in Forever. Keep an eye out for gear that fills these gaps.
Stats Explained
Crit chance will be our best stat. AT low level, we won't be able to get a lot of it, but the
Ice Shards talent increases crit damage from our
ice spells. If
Ice Lance crits on a frozen target, that's some of the highest damage we'll see at Level 20.
Haste will be our secondary DPS stat, letting us cast more often and get more freeze procs.
Finally, pick up as much spirit as you can to assist with mana regeneration. Forever's gameplay is slower — by design — so we're going to need to get as much boost to our mana resource as possible.
Consumables
Please note we have little information about how itemization works in Forever, and everything has been changed. The following info is based on what Blizzard have given us until we get our hands on the beta.
Health potions can be used in a pinch if things get dicey. We don't have a lot of our defensive kit yet at level 20, so don't forget to use them if you get into danger.
Mana potions can help with our DPS, and that missing mana regen that we don't have at Level 20.
