This page covers all known information about PvP in World of Warcraft: Forever. While PvP players will usually play on PvP Realms, PvE players can also partake in instanced PvP by playing Battlegrounds.
PvP Ruleset Information in WoW: Forever
In WoW: Forever, many players will want to PvP, either for the pure love of this aspect of the game or for its many rewards. PvP stands for Player versus Player and encompasses any activity that pits you against other players with the intent of slaying one another. There are two main ways you'll encounter PvP in Forever: either when traveling across the world, which is called World PvP, or in Battlegrounds.
PvP in Forever offers a PvP Ranking system, where you get recognized for your efforts against the opposing faction. This is a seasonal system, which unlocks more prestigious rewards the higher you climb, with exclusive titles and armor appearances along the way.
FAQDo I Need the PvP Ruleset to PvP?
No. While you'll encounter World PvP way more often when picking this ruleset, you're still able to participate in all forms of PvP in other rulesets. In order to attack other players (or to be attacked by other players), you must have PvP enabled. The PvP ruleset enables that for you automatically whenever you enter a Contested or Enemy zone in the world.
When playing with a group of friends, you should always decide as a group where you'll play. All the rulesets are heavily populated as they are region-wide, so population won't be a problem. The main choice here is how open to PvP you and your group are. Open world PvP can be fun at times, but the constant nature of it can be jarring for some players.
What Changed from Classic
If you played World of Warcraft in 2004 or during the 2019 Classic release, you'll notice many changes to the PvP system in Forever. First, the PvP Rank grind, in which you were compared against every other player in your realm, is gone.
In its place, there is a season-specific grind for Rank Points that take its place. If you've played Season of Discovery, it is a very similar concept, but without requiring third-party addons to check your progress. This system also has no decay; you'll never lose progress during a season. Bar only goes up. Learn more about it in our dedicated guide below.
PvP Realms
Unlike Classic, PvP is no longer a realm type; it is a ruleset. You can think of rulesets as being mega realms. In Forever, you don't select what realm you play, but what type of world rules you want to follow, leading you to play with like-minded players. Note that once you create a character in a ruleset, you can't swap that character's ruleset easily, nor can you send mail, trade, or interact with characters in other rulesets.
New Battleground
On top of the original three battlegrounds from Classic, Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, and Alterac Valley, Forever adds a new battleground: Darkspear Islands, a new 15v15 battleground.
Battlegrounds in WoW Forever
Below is a list of all battlegrounds available in WoW: Forever.
| Battleground | Level Range | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Warsong Gulch | 10-60 | 10v10 |
| Arathi Basin | 20-60 | 15v15 |
| Darkspear Islands | 30-60 | 15v15 |
| Alterac Valley | 51-60 | 40v40 |
FAQCan you queue for battlegrounds with friends on other rulesets?
You can meet friends from other rulesets by change on Battlegrounds, but you cannot group with players from other rulesets and queue together.
Darkspear Islands
The battleground consists of four bases that teams need to control and a flag in the middle that you must take to a controlled base to capture.
Holding bases slowly increases your points over time; capturing the flag increases your points based on the number of bases held at that moment. If you've played different versions of WoW, it is very similar to the Eye of the Storm battleground.
Darkspear Islands is available to players Level 30 or higher, with four brackets: 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60.
Queues
Battleground queues in Forever work cross-rulesets. This means that, when queuing for a battleground, you'll find players from Normal, PvP, and RP rulesets. This is the only moment in WoW Forever that you'll find players from other rulesets.
To queue for battlegrounds, head to your capital city, Stormwind or Orgrimmar, and find the Battleground Battlemasters. In Stormwind, they are located at the Stormwind Keep, and in Orgrimmar, at the Valley of Honor.
Level Brackets
In general, all battlegrounds follow the same bracket ranges, with the exception of Alterac Valley, which has a single bracket.
- Warsong Gulch: 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60.
- Arathi Basin: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60.
- Darkspear Islands: 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60.
- Alteract Valley: 51-60.
World PvP
While playing with PvP flagging enabled, you'll often attack or be attacked by members of the opposing faction while traveling the world. This is what we call World PvP.
In Normal, Roleplaying, and Hardcore rulesets, you need to manually flag yourself for PvP to participate in World PvP. In the PvP ruleset, you'll be automatically flagged when traveling to a contested or enemy zone.
You can flag yourself by typing /pvp in chat or by right-clicking on your character portrait and enabling PvP combat.
In general, any zone above Level 15 is considered a Contested Zone. This means that, in the PvP ruleset, you'll be flagged for PvP constantly above this level range.
FAQIs there Arena in Forever?
No. Arena is a feature added in The Burning Crusade and not present in WoW Forever.
PvP Gear
PvP has a unique set of items that you can purchase by using currencies unique to PvP. When participating in PvP activities, you'll earn a currency called Honor. Honor can then be used to purchase a variety of PvP items, from potions to powerful weapons. The best PvP items will also require you to spend Battleground Marks, earned by winning or losing BGs.
FAQIs PvP gear good for PvE?
PvP gear is competitive with dungeon and raid gear, but has stats and bonuses better tailored for PvP. This means you'll be at a slight disadvantage when doing PvE content in full PvP gear, but not by a lot.
Based on datamining, progressing through PvP Ranks unlocks Elite versions of PvP armor. Based on different flavors of WoW, this version will only provide enhanced visuals, but will have the same stats as baseline pieces. A cosmetic upgrade.
How to Start PvPing
You can start queuing for battlegrounds at Level 10, with Warsong Gulch being your only option. Warsong Gulch is a capture-the-flag battleground. You must capture the enemy's flag while protecting yours.
FAQWhat level can I start PvPing?
You can fight players from other factions as soon as you encounter them. As for battlegrounds, the first battleground you can queue for, Warsong Gulch, requires at least Level 10.
Note that you'll likely die a lot when you start; that's normal. PvP is a very different game mode from questing or doing dungeons. Practice, play as a group, and focus on objectives. At the end of the day, what matters is scoring or capturing the flag, not killing the most enemies.
FAQHow do PvP ranks work?
As you earn Rank Points through Battlegrounds and other PvP objectives, you'll increase your PvP Rank. You can learn more in our PvP Rank guide.
Seasons
Unlike other Classic versions of WoW, Forever features the concept of Seasons. Instead of a long, ever-encompassing PvP journey, your PvP Ranking progress will be reset every few months. While we don't officially have the full details on seasons, we've learned a lot already about them.
- Seasons last at least 10 weeks, likely around 20.
- Your PvP Ranking progress resets between seasons.
- Each season will offer a new set of rewards.
Note that these are subject to change as content changes and evolves over time, plus datamined-based information isn't officially confirmed by Blizzard.
You can check Blizzard's official timeline about when PvP Seasons' refresh should happen in Forever's Roadmap:
