World of Warcraft: Forever introduces Legacy, a new account wide progression system that is built around completing challenges, gaining achievements, earning Legacy Points, and unlocking character specific perks and rewards. This guide covers how Legacy works, how points are earned and spent, and the rewards available through the system.
World of Warcraft Forever Legacy System Guide
Legacy is one of the biggest new progression systems coming to World of Warcraft: Forever. It combines achievement-like challenges, account-wide progression, character-specific perk trees, and a separate reward track into one system designed to keep the entire Level 1-60 journey relevant.
Instead of only rewarding players for reaching Level 60 and focusing on endgame, Legacy rewards you for experiencing different parts of Azeroth. Leveling classes, raising professions, exploring the world, playing PvP, completing dungeons, and clearing raids can all contribute to your Legacy progression.
The most important thing to understand is that Legacy Points are unlocked account-wide, but every character spends those points independently. This means your main, your leveling alts, your profession characters, and other characters can all build their Legacy Trees differently using the same points your account has earned.
This guide covers everything currently known about Legacy from Blizzard's announcements and the BlizzCon 2026 build. Exact perks, values, requirements, and point limits may still change throughout the WoW Forever Beta.

How the Legacy System Works
The basic Legacy progression loop is simple:
- Complete a Legacy Challenge.
- Earn Legacy Points.
- Unlock those points across your account.
- Spend up to the current point cap independently on each character.
- Continue earning additional points to progress the Legacy Reward Track.
Legacy is designed around activities players would already naturally complete while playing WoW Forever rather than forcing everyone into a single type of content.
| Legacy Feature | Current WoW Forever Details |
|---|---|
| Legacy Points Initially Earnable | Up to 65 |
| Points Spendable Per Character at Launch | 16 |
| Legacy Trees at Launch | Adventure, Professions, Resourcefulness |
| Legacy Challenge Categories Shown | Classes, Tradeskills, Player vs. Player, Adventure, Dungeons, Raids |
| Point Allocation | Account-wide unlock, independently spent by each character |
| Additional Points | Continue progressing the Legacy Reward Track |
Legacy Challenges
Legacy Challenges are achievement-like objectives spread throughout WoW Forever. Completing a challenge awards Legacy Points instead of simply increasing an achievement score.
The BlizzCon build showed six primary Legacy Challenge categories:
- Classes
- Tradeskills
- Player vs. Player
- Adventure
- Dungeons
- Raids
This allows players with very different interests to contribute toward the same overall Legacy progression. A player who loves leveling alts can progress through class challenges, while profession-focused, PvP, dungeon, and raid players can earn points through the content they already enjoy.
Class Legacy Challenges
Leveling different classes is one of the major ways to earn Legacy Points. The BlizzCon build showed Druid and Warrior class milestones at Levels 25, 45, and 60, with each displayed milestone awarding 1 Legacy Point.
| Example Challenge | Requirement | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Novice Druid | Reach Level 25 for the first time on a Druid | 1 Legacy Point |
| Experienced Druid | Reach Level 45 for the first time on a Druid | 1 Legacy Point |
| Master Druid | Reach Level 60 for the first time on a Druid | 1 Legacy Point |
This gives players a permanent account-wide reason to level additional classes rather than viewing every new alt as completely separate progression.
Tradeskill Legacy Challenges
Professions also contribute to Legacy. Engineering and Blacksmithing were shown with milestones at 150, 225, and 300 skill, with the displayed challenges awarding 1 Legacy Point each.
This means players can build Legacy progression through crafting and gathering rather than being required to level every class or focus exclusively on combat content.
Adventure Legacy Challenges
Adventure Challenges cover broader accomplishments throughout Azeroth, including exploration, questlines, reputation progression, and major world objectives.
One example shown at BlizzCon was Lord Valthalak Laid to Rest, which required completing the quest chain beginning with An Earnest Proposition through Saving the Best for Last and being awarded 1 Legacy Point.
Dungeon Legacy Challenges
Dungeon Challenges were shown with milestones such as Novice Spelunker, Experienced Spelunker, and Master Spelunker.
These appear to reward completing groups of dungeon objectives rather than repeatedly farming the same dungeon for Legacy Points. The complete dungeon requirements were not visible in the BlizzCon build and will need to be confirmed during Beta.
Raid Legacy Challenges
Raiding also contributes directly to Legacy progression. Several raid challenges were visible in the BlizzCon build:
| Challenge | Requirement | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Conqueror of the Lair | Defeat Onyxia | 1 Legacy Point |
| Conqueror of the Wilds | Complete the required encounters within Hyjal Summit | 1 Legacy Point |
| Conqueror of the Deeps | Complete the required encounters within Barrow Deeps | 1 Legacy Point |
PvP Legacy Challenges
Player vs. Player has its own Legacy Challenge category. Blizzard has referenced earning PvP ranks and completing PvP accomplishments as ways to progress Legacy, although the full list of PvP challenges has not yet been revealed.
How Legacy Points Work
Legacy Points are shared across your account, but they are not spent like a traditional currency.
For example, if your account has unlocked 16 Legacy Points, your Warlock could spend all 16 points in one combination of Legacy Trees while your Warrior spends those same 16 unlocked points in a completely different way.
Warlock does not consume those points for Warrior. Each character simply has access to the amount your account has unlocked, up to the current per-character spending cap.
The 16-Point Legacy Cap
At launch, each character can spend a maximum of 16 Legacy Points, although Blizzard has confirmed that players can initially earn as many as 65 Legacy Points.
The cap is intentional. Instead of making every available Legacy Challenge mandatory before a character can reach full power, Blizzard wants players to choose the perks that best fit what that individual character is being used for.
A leveling alt may heavily invest into Adventure, while a gathering character could focus on Professions. A main character may prefer Resourcefulness or a mixture of several trees.
Legacy Trees
WoW Forever launches with three known Legacy Trees:
- Adventure — Leveling, exploration, Rested Experience, and open-world benefits.
- Professions — Tradeskill progression, gathering, fishing, Cooking, and crafting.
- Resourcefulness — Reagents, durability, Reputation, Honor, camps, buffs, and other convenience bonuses.
Legacy Trees are completely separate from class talent trees. Spending Legacy Points does not replace or reduce your normal 51 class talent points.
Adventure Legacy Tree
The Adventure tree focuses heavily on making repeated journeys through Azeroth smoother and more rewarding.
| Perk | Ranks Shown | BlizzCon Demo Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Well Rested | 5 | Rank 1 increases the rate Rested Experience accumulates and its maximum cap by 4%. Rank 2 showed 8%. |
| Talented | 5 | Allows talent points to begin being earned at Level 9 instead of Level 10. This does not increase the maximum of 51 talent points. |
| High Alert | 2 | Increases detection of nearby Stealthed targets as though your level were increased by 1. Does not function inside Battlegrounds. |
| Thrill of Adventure | 5 | Rank 1 restores 1% maximum Health and Mana over 10 seconds after landing the killing blow on a non-trivial enemy. Does not function in Dungeons, Raids, or Battlegrounds. |
Professions Legacy Tree
The Professions tree rewards players who spend time crafting, gathering, fishing, and leveling Tradeskills.
| Perk | BlizzCon Demo Effect |
|---|---|
| Working Overtime | Rank 1 increases your chance to gain a skill increase from a Primary, Secondary, or class-based Tradeskill by 4%. |
| Bountiful Harvest | Rank 1 increases scarce materials gathered from Mining, Herbalism, and Skinning by 20%. Rank 2 showed 40%. |
| Performance Bonus | Rank 1 gives a 5% chance to receive 100% additional Merchant Favor when turning in a crate to the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics. |
| Luremaster | Rank 1 gives a 25% chance to catch an additional fish while fishing with a lure active. |
| Master Chef | Rank 1 gives Cooking recipes a 10% chance to create an additional result. |
| Dedicated Study | A 25-second cast with a 23-hour cooldown that increases your lowest Tradeskill by 1. If both Primary Professions and all three Secondary Tradeskills are already at 300, you instead receive 2-4 of a random Elemental Essence. |
Resourcefulness Legacy Tree
Resourcefulness is focused primarily on reducing some of the everyday friction traditionally associated with Classic WoW.
| Perk | BlizzCon Demo Effect |
|---|---|
| The Quick and the Dead | Rank 1 increases movement speed while dead by 5%. After resurrection, helpful spells and abilities cost no resources for 1 minute or until entering combat. |
| Reinforce | Rank 1 reduces durability loss from death by 6%. |
| Diplomat | Rank 1 increases Reputation gains by 2%. |
| For Great Honor | Rank 1 increases Honor Points gained by 2%. |
| Permanence | Rank 1 causes long-duration class abilities granting stat or attribute benefits to your party or raid to last 50% longer. Camp benefits also last 50% longer. |
| Field Guide | Rank 1 reduces the cooldown for adding Camping features by 8%. |
| Reagent Economy | Class abilities no longer require reagents purchased from vendors, and Tier 1 Camping features cost no reagents to craft. |
Reagent Economy is especially important because WoW Forever is not simply removing class reagents from the game. Instead, players can choose to invest deeply enough into Resourcefulness to remove that inconvenience on a specific character.
Legacy Reward Track
The Legacy Reward Track is separate from the 16 points each character can spend on gameplay perks.
Instead, the Reward Track is based on the total number of Legacy Points your account has earned. This means there is still a reason to complete challenges after reaching the current character spending cap.
| Total Legacy Points | BlizzCon Demo Reward |
|---|---|
| 15 | Replica Ironforge Air Rifle |
| 25 | Spectral Bear Cub |
| 40 | Spectral Bear Tabard |
| 55 | Reins of the Spectral Bear |
The Reward Track is intended to contain cosmetic, collectible, and prestige rewards rather than competitive character power.
These thresholds and rewards were shown in the BlizzCon build and should still be considered subject to change during Beta.
Legacy and Hardcore
Hardcore has special rules for Legacy progression.
Progress earned outside Hardcore does not transfer into Hardcore. This prevents players from earning Legacy benefits in the normal ruleset and then beginning a fresh Hardcore character with those advantages already unlocked.
However, Legacy progress earned while playing Hardcore can flow outward to the broader WoW Forever account.
| Progression Direction | Allowed? |
|---|---|
| Normal Forever to Hardcore | No |
| Hardcore to Normal Forever | Yes |
Blizzard has also said Hardcore will receive its own Legacy Challenges because some standard challenges, particularly PvP objectives, would not make sense under Hardcore rules.
Why Blizzard Created Legacy
Legacy grew partly out of what Blizzard enjoyed about Hardcore WoW. Because death regularly sent players back to the beginning of the game, low-level zones remained active and populated instead of eventually becoming empty once most of the playerbase reached maximum level.
Forever is attempting to encourage that same cycle without requiring permanent death. Leveling another class, working on a different profession, exploring more of Azeroth, and completing new content all contribute toward permanent account progression.
This is particularly important for WoW Forever because the game is designed around a permanent Level 60 cap and long-term horizontal progression instead of repeatedly replacing the level cap with a new expansion.
Legacy Will Expand After Launch
The Legacy system is not intended to remain static. Blizzard has already discussed expanding it throughout WoW Forever with:
- New Legacy Challenges
- New Legacy perks
- Additional ways to spend Legacy Points
- Higher character spending caps
- Additional columns within existing Legacy Trees
- Potentially entirely new Legacy Trees
This means the initial 16-point spending limit should be viewed as the launch cap, rather than a permanent maximum for the entire lifespan of WoW Forever.
What We Still Do Not Know About Legacy
There are still several important details that will need to be confirmed throughout Beta:
- Whether WoW Forever also has a separate traditional Achievement system alongside Legacy Challenges
- The complete launch list of Legacy Challenges
- The final values and ranks of every Legacy perk
- Exact pathing and prerequisites within each Legacy Tree
- Whether Legacy Points can be respecced freely
- Whether respeccing has a cost
- Whether Legacy builds can be saved and swapped
- When the 16-point spending cap will first increase
- The complete Dungeon, Raid, and PvP Legacy Challenge requirements
- Future Legacy Reward Track rewards
WoW Forever Beta begins on September 17, 2026, giving us our first opportunity to fully test the Legacy system outside the limited BlizzCon build. We will continue updating this guide throughout Beta and after WoW Forever launches on November 4, 2026.
