Skyborne Race Lore
Let's take a look into the lore of the Skyborne race.
Rebellion and Fleeing Eldre'Thalas
The Skyborne race's story starts with the Shen'dralar Highborne, whom made their home in Eldre'Thalas, the area that is now known as Dire Maul in WoW Forever. In the aftermath of the destruction of the Well of Eternity, the Shen'dralar found themselves suffering from withdrawals with the lack of energies that the Well previously emanated. The leader of the Shen'dralar, Prince Tortheldrin, concocted a plan to summon a demon and use its power to keep the Shen'dralar sated.
When Prince Tortheldrin started working on summoning the demon, known as Immol'thar, a faction of Highborne was staunchily opposing him, worrying that summoning a demon could give the Burning Legion another foothold into Azeroth. In response, Tortheldrin conducted the destruction of many noble families in a single night.
The leader of the forces opposing Tortheldrin was someone named "Shal'nan", or the Veiled One. Rebels following the Shal'nan managed to continuously disrupt Tortheldrin's efforts to summon Immol'thar. On the eve of the ritual to summon Immol'thar, the rebels who followed the Shal'nan led a raid into Tortheldrin's sanctum, which caused arcane magic to spiral out of control throughout Eldre'Thalas. Many lives were lost during the raid, with the Shal'nan being the sole survivor of the confrontation.
The ruckus in Tortheldrin's sanctum created enough of a distraction to allow the remaining rebels to flee Eldre'Thalas. Heading West and chased by Tortheldrin's forces, the rebels embarked to the sea.
The Discovery of Skywall and the Founding of Zephras Isle
Eventually, the journey West sent them to an area ruled by primordial elemental spirits. With Tortheldrin's forces following close behind them, the remaining Shal'nan rebels struck a bargain with the primordial elementals.
With the bargain struck, they lifted an enormous landmass into the sky, which allowed the rebels to escape Tortheldrin - and Azeroth - entirely. The elementals then anchored the floating isle into a corner of Skywall, the elemental plane of air. The landmass, named Zephras Isle, served as a haven for the Shal'nan rebels, who spent thousands of years building into a self-sufficient society.
Through the years, the Skyborne experienced changes in their biology, as they lived for thousands of years in Skywall. These changes include them becoming more slender than their Highborne counterparts, and in recent times, some Skyborne are born with blue skin. The blue Skyborne people are dubbed as "Sky-Touch Blessed", and the cause for the skin change is unknown to this day.
Reemergence into Azeroth
After a millennium of living alongside the wind spirits that brought them freedom, the elementals suddenly vanished, along with the Shal'nan, a few centuries ago. Left to fend for themselves for the first time since arriving in Skywall, the disappearance of the wind spirits caused Zephras Isle to start to falter. With no elemental magic keeping the isle together, parts of it have fallen back into Azeroth.
In this time of dissent, three factions are vying for the control of what remains of Zephras Isle:
- The High Order: This faction of Skyborne realizes that their dependence on their elemental patrons has left them vulnerable. Descending upon Azeroth to reclaim the arcane knowledge they have lost, the High Order wants to ensure the Shen'dorei can have enough self-reliance to survive on their own.
- The Windshapers: This faction of Skyborne is clinging to their contract with their elemental patrons, descending upon Azeroth to look for clues that might help them solve exactly what happened to them. They will stop at nothing to see the wind spirits return, and their way of life preserved.
- The Al'Aketh: This faction of Skyborne is a cult that worships Al'Akir, the Windlord. After hearing a little about the Windlord from the wind spirits that previously inhabited Zephras Isle, some Skyborne managed to catch a glimpse of Al'Akir. These Shen'dorei broke off from the rest of the Skyborne, using the crisis to rise to prominence, and are attempting to seize control of the isle.
