Welcome to our Shadow Priest Leveling Guide for WoW Forever. This guide covers the basics you'll want to keep in mind while leveling, helping you spend less time figuring things out and more time exploring the world.
Shadow Priest Leveling Guide
Priest is not one of the easiest classes to level. Being very Mana-dependent and not
very tanky, leveling as a Priest is about finding your rhythm. You'll want to steadily fight
mobs while keeping a high uptime on your mana regen via
Spirit Tap, and wanding
enemies to regenerate more Mana. While not the tankiest, Priests have many survival tools
like
Power Word: Shield, and a plethora of healing spells.
Throughout this page, you will find level sliders. By moving them, the content of the page will adapt to the level selected. This will affect suggestions about talents, gear, and what areas we recommend you level in on your journey to max level. Much will change once you reach Level 60, but until then, there are a lot of options on how to approach your way there.
In WoW Forever, the game is about the journey. This page is meant to purely provide guidance and suggestions about where to go and how to more effectively level your Priest. However, this is not the only way to level; we suggest you try different styles, different builds, different routes, and tread your own path to Level 60. The game isn't about efficiency or just about the endgame; it is about the the fun and friends you make along the way. Azeroth is immense, and there is so much to discover at every corner. Take your time, and enjoy your time!
Low to no downtime when leveling.
Great utility through three group buffs and many utility spells.
Purple.
Difficult mana management before level 40.
No AoE abilities.
Low mobility.
Leveling Talent Build
The above build is specifically made for leveling. That said, you'll likely need to respec when you reach Level 60 for talents aimed at dungeons and raids.
Your first priority is to pick up
Wand Specialization, as most of your damage at
early levels will come from your wand.
After that, you will invest points in the Shadow tree, where there will be six main milestones:
Spirit Tap - Likely the most important leveling talent, allowing you to regen Mana faster
when you strike a killing blow on an enemy.
Mind Flay - When you obtain Mind Flay, you'll be able to drop Smite from your rotation in
favor of this new filler.
Vampiric Embrace - Allows you to heal yourself incredibly fast from damage you deal, and proc
Spirit Tap without landing a killing blow, making it incredibly useful in dungeons.
Devouring Contagion - Grants your
Devouring Plague the ability to jump to two new targets,
as well as reducing its mana cost. This too is amazing for dungeon content where Devouring Plague
can feel wasteful as targets can die too quickly for such a long and mana-expensive DoT. This talent
mostly fixes this issue.
Shadowform - The signature spell from the Shadow tree. Upon activating it, you'll
instantly feel the difference, as all Shadow spells now cost half their mana.
Meditation - Sadly only available very late into your leveling journey,
this talent improves our Mana economy significantly by allowing 50% of our regen to continue while casting.
Talent Options
There are many talent points that you can shuffle around based on preference, with the main one being
the choice between
Blackout and
Shadow Focus. While leveling, we prefer the random
stuns from Blackout over the hit chance increase from Shadow Focus. However, if you're doing many dungeons
while leveling or doing orange-difficulty quests often, you may find yourself missing a lot
of casts. In this case it might be preferable to have Shadow Focus instead.
You may also opt into getting
Twilight Focus earlier if you find yourself mostly leveling
solo, as the pushback protection it provides is very valuable. This can delay your
Shadowform
by three levels, which we don't recommend due to its Mana reduction being incredibly helpful,
but it is an option that is available to you if you lose a lot of damage to enemies closing in
on you and hitting you.
Respec at 40
Another option that's available is to level with a different tree, going for
Meditation
first, and then respec your talents at Level 40 or 42 to swap to a deep Shadow build when you can finally
get Shadowform. This is more Mana-efficient in the early levels, and you'll likely face
less downtime while getting to 40, but it will cost you 1 gold to respec at a time where
you'll be looking to save gold for your first mount.
Shadow Priest Leveling Rotation
Shadow has a very straightforward rotation, although calling it a rotation is not that accurate. Instead most of your battles will follow a formulaic script, where you'll run a sequence of spells and then finish a target with your wand.
Single-Target Rotation
- Pre-combat: Ensure you have
Power Word: Fortitude and
Inner Fire up.
When engaging a single enemy, you'll follow this sequence of casts:
- Cast
Power Word: Shield to prevent damage.
- Drop this step if the enemy isn't attacking you, which will happen when you're in a group, or you're confident the mob will die before it can reach you.
- Cast
Mind Blast to pull the enemy. - Cast
Devouring Plague. - Cast
Shadow Word: Pain. - Cast
Mind Flay - Be mindful of your Mana! - Use your Wand auto-attack to finish your enemy.
Before learning Mind Flay, you can use Smite in the rotation instead. Start combat by casting Smite, followed by Mind Blast, and continue from there. The goal is the same; cast each spell once, then wand to preserve Mana.
If you find yourself spending too much Mana, consider dropping Devouring Plague or Mind Flay,
or only using them against strong enemies. As you progress in the talent tree and unlock
Shadowform and
Devouring Contagion, their viability increases substantially.
FAQHow should I self-heal myself?
If you're caught in a bad situation and need emergency heals, do the following:
- Reapply
Power Word: Shield - Cast available heals. Pick the highest on the list based on what heals you have available:
Flash Heal
Heal
Lesser Heal
If you're in a really panicky situation, you can also use
Psychic Scream. Note that
it is very likely that feared mobs will run around and aggro other mobs. Use this in emergencies
only.
AoE Rotation
Shadow doesn't really have an AoE rotation per se, as none of our abilities deal damage in an area.
However, we can apply
Shadow Word: Pain to multiple targets. When leveling, this is
another option as well; instead of pulling one mob at a time, you can pull multiple by applying SWP
to them and then focusing one down at a time while keeping yourself alive with your shield
and heals.
Only do this if you're feeling comfortable in the area you're leveling, as things can quickly spiral
out of control against multiple enemies. It will drain your
Inner Fire stacks faster, leading to
you taking more damage as you lose its armor buff, and it will cause more spell pushback, meaning Mind
Blast or healing spells will take longer to cast. It's also a bigger stressor on your Mana.
Important Abilities
Your core rotation is therefore made up of the following abilities.
Mind Blast: A quick-cast spell that deals damage. Has a short cooldown;
Use it whenever available.
Shadow Word: Pain: Your main damage-over-time (DoT) spell. Apply to every
enemy.
Devouring Plague: Another DoT spell. Expensive mana-wise and stronger,
but has a cooldown.
Mind Flay: Your filler spell. Use it when there aren't better spells to
cast. It is a channeled spell, meaning it deals damage over time, but you must stand
still while it channels.
Power Word: Shield: Places a protective bubble on your target. Prevents
spell pushback.
Smite: A slow-casting spell that deals moderate damage. Use it until you
unlock Mind Flay.
Shadow Word: Death: Instantly deals damage to the target. If it fails to
kill the target, you take 10% of your health as damage.
Power Word: Fortitude: A buff that increases the target's maximum health.
Inner Fire: A buff that increases your armor. Starts with 20 stacks, and
every direct melee or ranged attack you receive removes a stack.
FAQWhat Is Spell Pushback?
When an enemy hits you while you're casting or channeling a spell, you'll see the cast bar move in a drastic way, leading a spell to take longer to cast or a channel ending earlier.
This effect is called Spell Pushback.
As Priests, we have a couple of tools to deal with it:
Power Word: Shield - Available to every Priest. While PWS is up, you suffer no spell pushback.
This is incredibly helpful when you want to get a panic heal out. Shield yourself and then heal,
increasing the chances that you can get the healing out before you die.
Twilight Focus - A talent in the Holy Tree. Takes three points to give us 70% protection
against pushback. When leveling, you'll likely see some Priests taking this talent, as the 70% reduction
is incredibly helpful. However, you generally don't cast often enough while leveling by yourself
to justify this talent, especially since you can get around pushback in other ways.
Martyrdom - By paying 2 talent points, this talent gives you six seconds of pushback protection
any time you get hit by a melee or ranged crit. It is mostly geared towards PvP, so unless you're doing Battlegrounds
regularly, we don't recommend picking this talent.
Utility and Crowd Control
Due to having two healing talent trees, Shadow Priests have access to a lot of healing and utility spells. Besides that, every Priest has two extra racials, on top of the four that all classes get.
Let's take a look at all the tools and tricks available to every Shadow Priest.
Click for More Information on Utility, Crowd Control, and Cleanse Abilities
Utility:
Power Word: Shield: PWS is our #1 tool for preventing damage and, more
importantly, spell pushback. While shielded, damage dealt to you will not cause
pushback nor eat stacks from
Inner Fire, which is incredibly helpful while
leveling.
Fade: Instantly reduces your threat. Did you pull aggro from the tank
in a dungeon? Hit Fade and let someone else deal with it.
Resurrection: Revives a dead ally, only usable out of combat.
Levitate: Our "mobility" ability. It allows us to float instead of falling,
preventing fall damage. It also allows us to float above water, making Priests one of
two classes able to do so!
Mind Vision: Changes your camera to see the world through the eyes of your
target. Useful for finding mobs you can target but not encounter. Also very useful in PvP
if you want to find someone hidden, like the enemy flag carrier in Warsong Gulch.
Buffs:
Power Word: Fortitude/
Prayer of Fortitude: An hour-long buff that increases
your target(s) Stamina, leading to a higher health pool.
Divine Spirit/
Prayer of Spirit: An hour-long buff that increases your
target(s) Spirit. Spirit increases Health and Mana regeneration out of combat. Most Mana users
have tools that lead to Spirit increasing their Mana regen in combat as well, making this
a very useful buff. I.e. Priests have
Spirit Tap and
Meditation.
Shadow Protection/
Prayer of Shadow Protection: A 20-minute-long buff that
increases your target(s) Shadow Resistance. Shadow Resistance reduces Shadow Damage taken and
increases the odds of Shadow Abilities against the target to miss.
Inner Fire: Increases your armor. The spell has 20 stacks, and every melee or ranged
attack you take will consume a stack. Reaching 0 stacks removes the buff.
Having
Power Word: Shield up prevents you from losing a stack.
Inner Focus: A talent in the Discipline tree that reduces the Mana cost of your next
spell cast by 100%. If it is a non-periodic spell capable of critting, it will also increase its
crit chance by 25%. Pairs well with
Devouring Plague for the mana cost, or with
Mind Blast for the extra crit chance.
Crowd Control
Psychic Scream: Our Fear spell. Be careful when using this, as affected
enemies will run from you in random directions incredibly fast. This will usually lead
to extra enemies being pulled by the effect.
Mind Control: Take control of an enemy humanoid within the level range of
the spell. Enemy players are humanoids. Really good spell to run enemies off a bridge or cliff,
and some trash mobs have special abilities or buffs that you can use on your allies.
Shackle Undead: Allows you to immobilize an Undead enemy, as long as they're
within the level range of the spell.
Mind Soothe: Reduces the aggro radius of a target humanoid enemy. Useful when
trying to skip pulling extra mobs.
Cleanses
Cure Disease +
Abolish Disease: Priests have the ability to cleanse
diseases from allies with these two spells. These spells have the same mana cost, so as
soon as you learn Abolish Disease, you'll always want to use it instead of Cure.
Dispel Magic: This is your dispel and purge spell. When cast on an ally,
it will remove a magical debuff. When cast on an enemy, it removes a magic buff.
Stats
In general, our stat priority will follow this base rule while leveling.
- Spell Power
- Your main companion while leveling as Shadow will be Spell Power. The higher your spell power, the faster enemies die, the less Mana you spend, and the less risk of death.
- Critical Strike Chance
- Critical Strike Chance comes next. While not a reliable stat due to its RNG element, a well-timed crit can save your skin or just make the leveling experience faster.
- Hit Chance
- Hit Chance is somewhat the opposite of crit. While a higher crit might make your life easier, low hit chance might make your life harder. While fighting enemies at your level, you'll need very little hit chance to not miss any spells. If you end up doing more dungeons or content that has higher-level enemies, like elite quests, you might want some hit chance though.
- Intellect
- Intellect increases your mana pool and slightly increases your Crit Chance. Usually not a stat we will go after, but it will be present on most of our pieces regardless.
- Stamina
- Similarly to Intellect, Stamina is not really a stat you seek, but it will be present on most pieces. Stamina increases your Health; the more you have, the longer it takes for you to die.
- Mana Per 5
- While the value of MP5 drops as your level increases and you gain access to more Mana recovery tools, early on it can be nice to have the extra regen. Don't prioritize it over other stats though, as the gain is minimal.
Item Level is always nice to have, but you'll rarely pick an item purely because of its item level. You'll seek items with better stats, which will generally mean items with higher item level, but you'll still want desirable stats on the items you're considering. That is, you won't equip an Agility item just because it has a higher item level.
It is important to highlight that this is based purely on the leveling experience. Our stat priority will change come release when the guides receive updates for Level 60. Hit will take center stage when talking about endgame content, but that isn't an issue during beta or leveling, unless you're attempting higher-level dungeons.
Gear and Where to Level
There are numerous ways to reach level 60 in Forever. Generally, you'll follow the zones closest to your starter area for convenience, but nothing stops you from exploring the world - in fact, it is encouraged! Below, we've prepared a suggestion of zones for each level bracket, and highlighted some of the important rewards that you can obtain at each level milestone. Same as before, select your current level to have accurate advice for your current situation and level range.
When questing in a zone, it is highly recommended to quest through the whole area, as quest chains often end with a final quest that requires you to complete the dungeon. In WoW Forever, these dungeon quests offer massive quest reward XP as well as powerful items. Also, just because a dungeon is listed for one faction does not mean you won't be able to pick up a few quests or very useful items when doing it as the opposing faction. Make sure to consult our Dungeon Hub for information on whether there are quests for your faction in each dungeon, and where to pick up these quests.

Leveling Tips
Wands - About 40 to 50% of your total damage early on will come from auto-shoot. This means that regularly upgrading to the best wand is quite valuable.
Keep up with your professions - Professions are very useful when leveling. If you pick Tailoring and keep up with it, you'll have powerful pieces of gear for your appropriate level for "free". Alchemy will provide you with strong elixirs and potions instead, speeding up your leveling journey.
Learn the flow of the spec - Priest leveling is very unique. While most classes will need to stop
to drink for HP or Mana, that is rarely the case for Shadow. Once you master leveling as a
Shadow Priest, you will be able to continuously defeat enemies without stopping, thanks to your healing
spells and
Spirit Tap. The secret is knowing the right number of spells to cast before
finishing your enemies with your wand so that you get the full Spirit regeneration benefit
right as the mob dies.
Log out in rested areas. Leveling all the way to 60 takes quite a bit of time, multiple days if not weeks of /played time. When taking breaks from leveling, try to always log off in a rested area like an inn or city. You earn twice as much rested XP while logged off in these areas, and this adds up quickly over the course of your leveling journey.

Professions
Historically, Priests have had close relationships with Tailoring and Enchanting. The ability to craft and enchant your own equipment is always desirable. In Forever, this relationship continues, but there are strong alternatives based on your playstyle.
At the end of the day there isn't a wrong answer. Any profession pairing is ok. While there are advantages to some specific ones, follow your heart's content. Professions are an expression of your character, so if you want to be a Master Engineer or Skinner, the world is your oyster.
- Recommended: Tailoring + Enchanting.
- Tailoring is hands down the best profession for Priests while leveling, as it provides some of the best gearing options, including powerful Bind on Pickup items.
- Since Tailoring is self-sufficient, it opens room for another self-sufficient profession. Out of those, Enchanting is the best option for Priests. With Enchanting, you can craft your own wands as they unlock, which gives you a large damage boost, and you can disenchant many items you craft with Tailoring to skill up.
- Recommended for Raiders: Engineering + Alchemy.
- Raiders seeking the most from their professions will likely gravitate towards Engineering and Alchemy. Based on early datamining, these two professions likely provide the most benefit in a raiding environment, with Engineering enabling the use of explosives, and Alchemy having access to exclusive potions.
- Note that this isn't final and will likely be updated over the first few weeks of the WoW Forever launch.
- Alternative: Alchemy + Herbalism.
- While one of the best options at max level, Alchemy also has many benefits while leveling, providing access to elixirs, mana potions, and protection potions.
- Alchemists rely heavily on herbs for their crafts, making Herbalism the perfect pairing.
- Alternative: Engineering + Mining.
- Engineering gives you access to explosives and unique gearing options.
If you're planning on rolling Gnome, you also have access to
Engineering Specialization,
which decreases the odds of your "inventions" backfiring, which is a nice bonus.
- Engineering uses a lot of raw materials found with Mining, making it the preferred pair if you're not buying all materials from the Auction House.
- Engineering gives you access to explosives and unique gearing options.
If you're planning on rolling Gnome, you also have access to
