Leveling Talent Build
The biggest change to Fire Mage leveling in Forever revolves around the introduction of
Frostfire Bolt. In previous iterations of Classic Fire Mage would begin dipping
into the Arcane tree after reaching their 31-point capstone talent, but Frostfire Bolt changes
that dramatically.
WHat's so unique about Frostfire Bolt is that it benefits from talents that would modify
both Frost and Fire spells, such as
Ignite and
Ice Shards. To capitalize,
you should begin going into the Frost tree after accessing
Combustion.
Below is a quick list of what we consider to be the most important talents you'll be picking up as you level to 60.
Wake of Fire: Speeds up mob grinding by significantly increasing your
Fire Blast's Critical strike chance after landing a killing blow.
Ignite: Adds up to 40% more damage to your Fire Critical strikes.
This talent performs better at higher levels, but is still useful while leveling.
Pyroblast: Your single hardest-hitting spell. Synergizes with new Forever
talents, making it very usable while leveling.
Heating Up: This hot-streak mechanic lowers your Pyroblast's cast time
whenever you critically strike with certain spells.
Master of Elements: Improves combat efficiency by refunding Mana
on spell critical strikes.
Combustion: Steadily increases your spell critical chance until you've
scored three critical strikes.
Additionally, we'll be dipping into the Frost talents to pick up the following.
Elemental Precision: Increases your combat efficiency by
reducing the chance to have your spells resisted.
Ice Shards: Increases the spell critical damage bonus of
Frost spells and Frostfire Bolt, which replaces Fireball
starting at Level 40.
Shatter: Helps you control how often you critically strike enemies,
creating synergy with Heating Up.
The order in which you acquire the above talents isn't necessarily set in stone, as long as you learn them all. Prioritize picking up Wake of Fire, Heating Up, and Master of Elements as fast as possible, as these talents inject significant long-term combat value into your gameplay.
Ignite looks tempting to max-out as early as possible, but you may want
to prioritize other talents while your spell critical chance is still quite low during the
lower levels.
Fire Mage Leveling Rotation
Mage is the quintessential spellcaster archetype in WoW Forever. It excels at dealing strong damage from long distances, and Fire Mage does the best job at that out of the class's three specializations.
All three Mage specializations have robust area-of-effect (AoE) capabilities as well. Fire Mage excels at dishing out bursty and front-loaded area damage - at the risk of putting themselves in harm's way.
Single-Target Rotation
Your single-target, open world rotation is the sequence of abilities you'll press most often during your leveling journey in Forever. Different circumstances will require small adjustments, but you'll generally approach most single-target fights like this while leveling:
- Stand at max distance, which depends on your opening spell. Once
you've unlocked the
Flame Throwing talent, you can start pulls at
41 yards. - Cast
Fireball (or
Frostfire Bolt if you have it). - Cast
Fire Blast if the enemy is low health or if you have Wake
of Fire up.
Most of the time, it's that simple. However, combat is dynamic. Enemy health, fleeing enemies, or your own Mana levels change how you approach your spellcasting habits. Keep these things in mind:
- Avoid overkilling enemies. If an enemy has 30 health remaining, you don't need to spend Mana on a big spell that deals 90 damage. Prioritize efficient damage via spells like Scorch or by simply using your wand.
- Maximize your
Wake of Fire efficiency. This talent spices up your spell
usage by greatly increasing the critical chance of Fire Blast. - Make use of your ranged. The best time to cast long spells like Fireball or Pyroblast is before the enemy reaches you. As a mob gets closer, and lower on health, switch to faster casts like Scorch, or use your wand.
- It's fine to take damage. Mages are glass cannons, but one mob getting a few hits on you isn't a big deal. You don't need to waste Mana blinking away from enemies or kiting one half-dead enemy. You will sit down occasionally to drink water anyway, so you might as well eat some food too.
AoE Rotation
Fire Mage has the strongest burst AoE in the game, especially at higher levels. The trade-off is more damage taken by being near clusters of enemies, and the very real risk of pulling aggro very quickly.
- If the enemies are not being tanked, round them up by body-pulling. This is best done with
your wand or by casting a rank-1 spell like
Frostbolt. - If you're solo, cast
Frost Nova to freeze the enemies together in a cluster. - Cast
Flamestrike underneath them. - Cast
Blast Wave if you have it, otherwise use
Cone of Cold. - Cast
Arcane Explosion as needed to finish off the pack.
The biggest mistake new Fire Mages make is using costly AoE abilities on fewer than four enemies. Most of the time, especially in dungeons, you don't want to 'empty the clip' on your Mana bar, unless the pull has at least four targets.
- Don't overlap snares. Fire Mage can slow enemies with
Blast Wave and
Cone of Cold.
If you're AoE grinding, using these abilities back-to-back gives the cluster a chance to reach you
once the slows run out and both spells are still on cooldown. - Use
Mana Shield sparingly. You'll need most of your Mana pool to finish up
a large AoE pull, so Mana Shield should be saved for near-death moments only.
Important Abilities
Mages in Forever have a wide and flexible kit of quality-of-life perks that make them the envy of other classes. Beyond damage, these Mage abilities shape your leveling experience.
Conjure Food &
Conjure Water: Provides a steady (and cost-free)
supply of refreshment while adventuring.- Teleportation & Portals: Allows you to travel across most of Azeroth in an instant instead of wasting time on a flight path or ship.
Blink: This short-cooldown and short-distance teleport gets you out of most dangerous
situations. When used on cooldown while running, Blink is roughly a 20% increase in travel speed.
Evocation: Restores most of your Mana pool over an 8-second channel.
Mana Gems: Provides an emergency source of Mana.
Slow Fall: Allows for safe jumping off any mountain, ledge, or cliff, if you have a
Light Feather reagent handy. You should never leave town without them.
Stats and Gear
- Spell Power: Spells have been rebalanced in Forever. They now deal lower damage by default, but there's more gear available with Spell Power. This change was implemented to make gearing upgrades more compelling for spellcasters throughout the leveling process. Try to have Spell Power on as many pieces of gear as possible.
- Critical Strike: Fire Mage is built around scoring spell criticals. Gear with bonus critical strike chance is rare at low levels, but you should prioritize it whenever you can find it.
- Intellect: Increases your Mana pool and provides a small amount of bonus critical strike. Intellect gives you more Mana to work with in combat, but increases your regeneration downtime between fights.
- Spirit: Increases your Health and Mana regeneration rate. This stat is extremely underrated for leveling. Don't prioritize it at the expense of Spell Power or Intellect, but don't underestimate the power of having high amounts of Spirit, as it will get you back into action faster whenever you take a short refreshment break.
- Stamina: Provides 10 additional Health per point. A certain amount of Stamina is required to survive AoE pulls and avoid death in dungeons, but you shouldn't gear for Stamina for its own sake while leveling.
Gear and Where to Level
If you're new to adventuring in Azeroth, know that leveling is a non-linear experience, particularly in the early levels. Zones can have quests that are 10+ levels apart. As such, you'll typically find yourself doing a few quests in a given zone and then traveling to a new area for more level-appropriate quests, before returning for higher level quests.
Don't be afraid to travel during your leveling experience. Different zones provide new Quests, Dungeons, and other opportunities, and as a mage you will have an easier time switching between zones than everyone else. You'll also want to gather up a zone's Dungeon quests and run each dungeon at least once. WoW Forever has significantly boosted the experience granted by dungeon quests, so each dungeon is worth doing at least once for experience and loot alike.

Here are some items you'll want to pick up during your leveling journey. These items aren't required to level as a Mage in Forever, but are significant power spikes worth investing in.
- Wands
Greater Magic Wand is an incredibly strong low-level wand that holds value well into your 20s.
Gravestone Scepter is available from the Blackfathom Deeps quest Blackfathom Villainy
beginning at level 18. Players generally run Blackfathom Deeps between levels 20 and 26. This wand is your best option until at least level 30.- Level 30 Mages have access to a spec-specific wand like
Ragefire Wand from a level-30 class quest.
- Weapon
Alliance players can grab the
Golemheart Stave
from Hall of Thanes as early as level 13. Horde players can complete Hidden Enemies
in Ragefire Chasm to obtain
Staff of Orgrimmar at a similar level.
Alliance players can grab
Emberstone Staff from The Deadmines
as low as 17.
Horde players can complete the Wailing Caverns quest Leaders of the Fang
for the
Crescent Staff at a similar level.- If you have Enchanting, craft a
Glimmering Staff at 25.
Death Prophet Spine from Razorfen Kraul is another option as you approach 30.
- Helmet
- Helms with stats don't begin to drop until the late 20s. However, if you have Tailoring,
you can craft
Pearly Circlet at level 20. This crafted helm will last you well into your 30s.
- Helms with stats don't begin to drop until the late 20s. However, if you have Tailoring,
you can craft
- Shoulders
- Statted shoulder armor is similarly rare, but adjustments to quest rewards in Forever
have made early options like
Talbar Mantle much more worthwhile.
- Statted shoulder armor is similarly rare, but adjustments to quest rewards in Forever
have made early options like
- Rings
- You'll begin seeing useful rings around level 16.
Alliance players
should acquire
Minor Channeling Ring from WANTED: Chok'sul when able. Patient explorers
can also aim for
Philanthropist's Ring by handing in 20 books to their faction's library
in either Stormwind or the Undercity. It's a tedious task, but the ring will last you well past level 30.
- You'll begin seeing useful rings around level 16.

Leveling Tips
Craft when you log in. Mages use a lot of food and water while leveling. When you first log in for the day, empty your Mana bar to craft food, water, and a Mana Gem if you have one.
Maintain professions. WoW Forever has made crafting professions much more useful, especially at lower levels. Tailoring will take time and gold to level, but doing so provides unique gearing opportunities you can't get elsewhere in your leveling journey.
Plan your travel. Mages can teleport to capital cities starting at level 20. Use this unique
perk to cut down on travel time. For example, a Horde Mage in Thousand Needles who needs to get to
Ashenvale Forest can teleport to Orgrimmar and fly from there rather than getting on the taxi at
Freewind Post. Similarly, Mages should never set their
Hearthstone to a capital city they
can teleport to.
Make friends. Mages are a self-sufficient class, but WoW Forever encourages, and in some cases requires, group play and cooperation. Helping out other players pays dividends later when you find yourself in need of a tank or healer for a dungeon. You'd be surprised at how much good will you can generate by sharing a stack of food or water with another adventurer, or buffing them some Arcane Intellect!

Professions
- Recommended: Tailoring + Enchanting
- Tailoring has been updated to provide high-quality gear upgrades at all levels, while Enchanting now comes with unique personal enchants and additional craftable wands.
- Alternative: Herbalism or Mining + Skinning
- If you want to level as fast as possible, keeping up with a crafting profession will get in the way. Two gathering professions provide a steady cash flow. You can also build a stockpile of materials to be used at Level 60 if you want to switch professions to something like Tailoring, Alchemy, or Engineering from scratch.
