On this page, you will learn how to optimize the rotation of your Fire Mage in both single-target and multiple-target PvE situations in WoW Forever. We also have advanced sections about cooldowns, procs, etc. in order to minmax your DPS.
Fire Mage Gameplay and Rotation Guide
Fire Mage has a two completely different builds and rotations depending on how you choose to play. You can either
choose the
Frostfire Bolt (FFB) build or the
Combustion (Deep Fire) build. Your primary focus for
both builds will be to generate as many
Heating Up procs for massive
Pyroblast damage. However, the
differences between these two specs are quite big, which gives Fire Mage a lot of variety and dynamic gameplay opportunities.
FAQWhat is Spell Batching?
Spell batching in World of Warcraft is a mechanic that groups spellcasts into "batches" of time, instead of every treating every spell individually. This means that if two spells are cast in the same batch, they both can benefit from buffs or stacks.
The easiest way to take advantage of this is to press an instant-cast spell just before a cast-time spell finishes.
For FFB Mages, this will allow a single stack of
Fingers of Frost to buff two spells,
or lets you cast two spells on a frozen target even if one of them breaks the freeze.
Frostfire Bolt (FFB) Single-Target Rotation
The rotation for the FFB build focuses primarily on generating as many
Heating Up procs
as possible.
Fire Blast guarantees 1 stack of Heating Up and if it crits, it will generate 2 stacks.
Each stack of Heating Up reduces the cast time of
Pyroblast by 1.5 seconds, up to 3 stacks (-4.5 seconds).
It is important that you use your Pyroblast at 3 stacks or you might waste additional Heating Up procs. With the
addition of the new
Fire Power talent, your Fire effects on the target increases damage done by your Fire spells by 3%.
This includes: Pyroblast's DoT,
Improved Scorch,
Ignite, and
Fireball's DoT. Keep in mind
that your FFB's DoT does not benefit from this, but the damage done by FFB does. Another important part of this build is
Fingers of Frost, since FFB benefits from
Ice Shards and
Shatter. Keep in mind that
Fingers of Frost has two stacks, meaning you can cast your first spell and then batch an instant-cast spell
at the end of your second cast, which will guarantee all three spells to crit.
- Begin each encounter with
Pyroblast, then cast
Scorch until you
reach 5 stacks of Improved Scorch. If you happen to get 3 stacks of
Heating Up before you
finish applying 5/5 Improved Scorch cast Pyroblast immediately. Make sure to refresh
scorch within 30 seconds so the debuff doesn't drop. At this point you will be following a cast priority.
- Cast
Pyroblast once Heating Up reaches 3 stacks. - Cast
Fire Blast on cooldown until Heating Up reaches 3 stacks. - Cast
Frostfire Bolt until Heating Up reaches 3 stacks. - Cast
Scorch to maintain your Improved Scorch debuff. - Reminder: When Fingers of Frost triggers, always batch an instant cast on the second stack(pref. Fire Blast).
Frostfire Bolt AoE Rotation
The rotation for the FFB AOE is extremely simple with our current talent selection. If the raid or content you are doing
includes important AOE encounters, you can always choose to take a point out one of your other Fire talents and place it into
Blast Wave. In addition,
Precision now effects all schools of magic our so our AOE DPS increases and
is a lot more reliable when using other schools of magic.
- Begin each encounter with
Flamestrike. Then cast
Blink to get into range. At this point you will
be following a cast priority. Keep in mind this is ONLY if you do not have aggro on you as a single second of pushback changes the
cast priority to only use instant cast spells.
- Cast
Blast Wave on cooldown. - Cast
Cone of Cold (since it can trigger
Fingers of Frost). - Cast
Flamestrike (AOE lasts for 8 seconds) make sure you start casting a new one before the AOE ends. - Cast
Arcane Explosion. - Reminder: When
Fingers of Frost triggers, always batch an instant cast on the second stack. Our highest damage example
would be: Flamestrike into a batched Blast Wave.
FAQWhy Does Jumping Increase AoE Range?
The Leeway System: This mechanic is tied to WoW's legacy leeway system—a networking and movement design built into the original engine to compensate for server tick rates, latency, and movement prediction in older computing environments. Due to this mechanic instant AOE spell range is increased by roughly 30%.
The easiest way to take advantage of this is to press an instant-cast spell such as Arcane Explosion, Goblin Sapper Charge, or Blast Wave just after jumping.
Combustion (Deep Fire) Single-Target Rotation
The rotation for the
Combustion build focuses on generating as many
Heating Up proc as possible while maintaining 1-2
stacks of
Arcane Blast.
Fire Blast guarantees 1 stack of Heating Up and if it crits, it will generate 2 stacks. Each stack
of Heating Up reduces the cast time of
Pyroblast by 1.5 seconds up to 3 stacks(-4.5 seconds). It is important that you use your
Pyroblast at 3 stacks or you might waste additional Heating Up procs. With the addition of the new
Fire Power talent, your Fire
effects on the target increases damage done by your Fire spells by 3%. This includes: Pyroblast's DOT,
Improved Scorch,
Ignite, and
Fireball's DOT. Another important part of this build is Arcane Blast; All other spells benefit from
it's buff which grants 12/24/36/48% of your Intellect as Spell Damage which lasts 18 sec from time of initial application.
- Begin each encounter with
Pyroblast, then cast Scorch until you reach 5 stacks of Improved Scorch. If you happen to get 3 stacks of
Heating Up before you finish applying 5/5 Improved Scorch cast Pyroblast immediately. Make sure to refresh scorch within 30 seconds so the debuff doesn't
drop. At this point you will be following a cast priority.
- Cast
Pyroblast once Heating Up reaches 3 stacks. - Cast
Fire Blast on cooldown until Heating Up reaches 3 stacks. - Cast
Arcane Blast and refresh it after the stack falls(depending on fight lenth you might refresh instead of letting it fall depending on mana). - Cast
Arcane Missiles when
Missile Barrage is active. - Cast
Fireball as your filler ability. - Cast
Scorch to maintain your Improved Scorch debuff. - Reminder: When
Arcane Concentration triggers, you can refresh Arcane Blast instead of letting it drop.
Combustion (Deep Fire) AoE Rotation
The rotation for the Combustion (Deep Fire) AOE is extremely simple with our current talent selection. If the raid or content you are doing

Important Abilities
While the damage rotation seems relatively simple as a Mage, you will find yourself engaged in a fast-paced playback loop with Pyroblast. In addition, Mage has some of the strongest utility in the game. This added utility will allow you a ton of control over how an encounter plays out in ways other than simply dealing massive damage. Highlighted below are some key class abilities.
Blink: Teleports the caster 20 yards forward. Also frees the caster from Stuns and Immobilizes. This ability is extremely
versatile and can be used to reposition and escape crowd control.
Conjure Mana Ruby: Conjures a mana ruby that can be used to instantly restore 1000 to 1200 mana. Planning ahead and creating
Mana Gems can often save your life, or extend your mana long enough to avoid downtime during a boss fight. You can created multiple Mana
Gems of different ranks to use on extremely long encounters.
Polymorph: Transforms the enemy into a sheep, forcing it to wander around for up to 20 sec. This can be used both offensively
and defensively. For example in PvP you can use this ability to dismount someone before they have a chance to run away.
Counterspell: Counters the enemy's spellcast, preventing any spell from that school of magic from being cast for 10 sec. This
ability is incredibly strong as it is off the Global Cooldown, meaning you can continue casting other spells without incurring a 1.5 second
cooldown. The only other interrupt in the game that works like this are priest's Silence and a Warlock's Felhunter Spell Lock.
Frost Nova: Blasts enemies near the caster and freezes them in place for up to 8 sec. This ability is not only a defensive
ability to gain distance from an enemy, it is an offensive spell you can use for Shatter combos with FFB.
