Protection Paladin Gameplay and Rotation Guide
Welcome to our Rotation page for Protection Paladins. On this page, you will find everything you need to know about playing a Protection Paladin including standard rotations and tips to help increase your performance.
Protection Paladins are known for their large amounts of AoE damage, powerful utility, and simplistic rotation. With a limited amount of abilities compared to other tanks you will often just be pressing whatever is off cooldown while keeping your Mana in mind and ensuring you have enough to execute your responsibilities as a tank.
In addition your standard rotation, you have a ton of utility at your disposal
to help manage tricky situations.
Blessing of Freedom and
Blessing of Protection
are two incredibly powerful abilities, with no other class in the game offering
anything similar. Combined with powerful group buffs such as
Blessing of Kings
or
Retribution Aura, Protection Paladins will always have a role
to play in any group or high-end PvE setting.
Single-Target Rotation
Protection gameplay centers around managing your Mana to ensure you always
have enough to cast your required abilities.
Consecration offers a ton
of extra damage, but it is extremely expensive. Your main focus is to cast all of your
abilities as much as possible, without ever running out of Mana.
- Maintain
Righteous Fury at all times. - Maintain
Seal of Fury when tanking. - Keep
Consecration active as much as your Mana permits. - Cast
Judgement as much as possible. - Cast
Holy Shield as much as possible. - Cast
Holy Strike on cooldown.
Judgement provides an interesting dilemma, as it is off the global
cooldown, meaning you can press it at the same time as another ability, but it
will also taunt enemies when you have
Seal of Fury active. When raiding,
you may need to be careful with how you use this ability to prevent getting Aggro
when you do not intend to. The easiest way to do so is by swapping to another Seal when
not actively tanking as the main tank. Typically, your Raid leader will assign you with
another Seal debuff to maintain such as
Seal of Light or
Seal of Wisdom,
and that is what you will swap to when off-tanking.
Additionally, your rotation will change slightly when you are not actively
tanking. Both
Hammer of Wrath and
Holy Wrath can add a nice
damage boost, but they require you to cast them. You should only do this when
you are not actively tanking. Of course
Holy Wrath will also only damage
Undead/Demons.
AoE Rotation
As a Protection Paladin your AoE rotation will look very similar to the single-target rotation, but with an increased importance on AoE abilities to help maintain threat and deal additional damage.
- Maintain
Righteous Fury at all times. - Maintain
Seal of Fury when tanking. - Keep
Consecration active. - Cast
Judgement as much as possible. - When not actively tanking, cast
Holy Wrath if you are fighting Undead/Demons. - Cast
Holy Shield as much as possible. - Cast
Exorcism when fighting an Undead/Demons. - Cast
Holy Strike on cooldown.
In AoE scenarios it is incredibly important to maintain
Consecration for not
just damage but threat as well.
Holy Wrath also gains significant
importance when fighting Undead/Demons, just make sure you aren't tanking a bunch of hits
while you cast it and are unable to dodge and parry.
TipsMaster Shieldsworn!
Shieldsworn is the capstone talent for Protection Paladin.
It causes
Holy Strike to trigger
Holy Shield, and
Shield Specialization
also grants the ability to block spells for 6 seconds. This turns Holy Strike into
a very important defensive ability that you will want to time well with boss
mechanics. Not casting Holy Strike enough becomes not only a massive DPS loss,
but a huge Mana and survivability decrease as well.
FAQWhich Aura Should I Use?
Choosing the best Aura is highly situational as all of them are good in
the right situation. Auras do not stack, meaning that when you have
multiple Paladins in your group you should each be running something different.
Typically
Retribution Aura can be used for increasing your groups damage output,
but other more defensive auras are often needed when raiding.
Fire Resistance Aura,
Frost Resistance Aura, or
Shadow Resistance Aura can be useful
depending on the encounter. Otherwise you can opt for
Devotion Aura
for extra defensiveness on your group and yourself, or
Concentration Aura if party
members are dealing with a lot of spell pushback.
TipsMaintain Your Blessings!
Blessings are unique buffs that Paladins are able to cast on themselves and their allies. It is important that you keep a Blessing on yourself and your party members at all times. If you are in a group with multiple Paladins, you will want to make sure you are coordinating who is casting which Blessing as they do not stack, and you are only able to have one per Paladin.
Blessing of Kings increases a player's total stats. This is
typically the strongest buff you can provide, and if you are ever unsure what
to cast on a player, you can default to this.
Blessing of Might increases Melee Attack Power for any player
with the buff. This is strong on any Melee DPS and Tanks.
Blessing of Wisdom restores Mana for any player with the buff.
This is good on Healers and anyone else who is in desperate need of Mana.
Utility
Paladins offer some of the best utility out of any class and understanding how best to use it can be the difference maker in a good paladin and a great one. Below we will discuss some of the important abilities you have at your disposal to give your group the highest odds of succeeding:
Blessing of Freedom grants your target immunity to movement
impairing effects. If your target is already rooted or frozen in place, casting
it will remove these debuffs. This ability is extremely valuable in PvP situations
specifically, but also has its uses in regular PvE content, i.e. when a melee DPS is
rooted in place while out of melee range.
Blessing of Protection causes the target to become immune to
any physical damage for its short duration. However, when you cast this on a
player, they will be unable to attack or deal physical damage. Typically this is
best used on casters or healers who have aggro and need to continue healing or
get enemies off them, including yourself.
Divine Intervention is one of the more iconic Paladin
abilities, allowing you to sacrifice yourself in order to remove your target from combat.
Typically this is used when your party or raid is about to wipe. You will cast
the ability on a Healer so that after the wipe they can start resurrecting players
without needing to run back from the graveyard.
Voice of Truth grants immunity to silence and interrupt effects
for a short duration. During difficult moments, this can be valuable to use to
help ensure you are getting casts off. Especially valuable in PvP settings.
