On this page, you will learn how to optimize the rotation of your Holy Paladin Healer, depending on the type of damage your group is receiving while doing PvE content in WoW Forever. We also have advanced sections about cooldowns, procs, etc. in order to minmax your healing output and your mana efficiency.
Holy Paladin Gameplay and Rotation Guide
Welcome to our Rotation page for Holy Paladins. On this page, you will find everything you need to know about playing a Holy Paladin, including standard rotations and tips to help increase your performance.
Holy Paladins specialize at single-target healing and excelling on the
class requires choosing the best spell for every situation you are in. Most of
the time you will find yourself relying on the highly efficient
Flash of Light
for the majority of your healing, while weaving in
Light's Vigil for
dangerous AoE moments and
Holy Light with procs.
In addition to keeping players alive, as a Paladin you are responsible for providing
very powerful buffs to your party. Blessings such as
Blessing of Kings provide
a huge boost to your group, while Auras such as
Devotion Aura help
reduce everyone's damage taken. Additionally, you have a large amount of utility at your
disposal with spells like
Blessing of Freedom and
Blessing of Protection.
Both of these abilities can be used to get out of very dangerous situations that you
or your party members may find yourselves in.
Mastering Holy Paladin requires an understanding of how to best juggle all of your different single-target abilities while buffing your allies with the appropriate buffs, significantly increasing the power of your group. On this page, you will find out exactly how to do that.
Rotational Priorities
While DPS and Tanks have very strict rotations that need to be fully followed to optimize your damage, Healers do not. Playing a Healer optimally means following a priority list rather than a strict rotation, with you choosing the best spell to cast based on the situation you are in. The overall priority for Holy Paladin will be as follows:
- Maintain
Oath of Light on your Tank at all times. - Use
Seal of Light if no other Paladin is, otherwise use
Seal of Wisdom. - Cast
Light's Vigil to prepare for AoE damage, follow it up by casting
Holy Shock on the same target for large AoE healing. - Cast
Flash of Light as your primary healing ability. - Consume
Infusion of Light with
Holy Light. - Cast
Holy Shock when a player is in danger and you won't have time
to get a cast off. - Use
Lay on Hands in desperate situations where you have no other
choices. Remember it will consume all of your remaining Mana!
While Holy Paladin has a very straight forward playstyle, relying heavily on the
use of
Flash of Light, it typically needs to involve other spells during
very heavy damage as Flash of Light will rarely provide enough healing alone.
This is where
Holy Light and
Light's Vigil can help. When you
have
Infusion of Light, Holy Light becomes a very quick way to output
a large amount of healing, but of course with a heavier Mana cost than Flash of Light.
Light's Vigil offers some of the best healing in the entire kit, but
at an extremely expensive cost. It is best used before damage goes out; that way
you can quickly cast
Holy Shock right after the damage hits for a large
burst of AoE healing. That being said, it can still be appropriate to cast when
facing heavy sustained AoE damage.
Excelling as a Holy Paladin means getting as much value out of Light's Vigil as possible without running out of Mana. It can be a tricky balancing act that requires a lot of practice. One of the best pieces of advice that can be offered is to keep an eye on the Health of the enemies you are facing. The lower that health is, the more aggressive you can be with your Mana. You typically want to avoid dumping a large amount of Mana when you will be in combat for an extended period of time, but at the same time, if you know that you will have downtime coming up to regen some extra Mana, you can continue to be aggressive.
TipsRemember The 5 Second Rule!
Whenever you cast a spell, your Mana regeneration will stop for 5 full seconds.
After the 5 seconds, it will begin regenerating an amount based on your Spirit again.
With talents such as
Reverence you can bypass this restriction to some extent, but with
this rule in mind, it can often be worth stopping casts when no healing is needed, or letting
other healers in your party take the reins for a bit while you regen some Mana.
FAQWhich Aura Should I Use?
Choosing the best Aura is highly situational as all of them are good in
the right situation. Additionally, Auras do not stack, meaning that when you have
multiple Paladins in your group you should each be running something different.
Typically
Retribution Aura will always be used by a Tank or DPS, and you
can instead opt for something else. When you are facing an encounter where
any of the Resistance Auras can be useful (
Fire Resistance Aura,
Frost Resistance Aura,
or
Shadow Resistance Aura) then you should be using one of them. Otherwise
you can opt for
Devotion Aura or
Concentration Aura when dealing
with a lot of spell pushback.
TipsMaintain Your Blessings!
Blessings are unique buffs that Paladins are able to cast on themselves and their allies. It is important that you keep a Blessing on yourself and your party members at all times. If you are in a group with multiple Paladins, you will want to make sure you are coordinating who is casting which Blessing, as they do not stack, and you are only able to have one per Paladin.
Blessing of Kings increases a player's total stats. This is
typically the strongest buff you can provide, and if you are ever unsure what
to cast on a player, you can default to this.
Blessing of Might increases Melee Attack Power for any player
with the buff. This is strong on any Melee DPS and Tanks.
Blessing of Wisdom restores Mana for any player with the buff.
This is good on Healers and anyone else who is in desperate need of Mana.
DPSing as a Holy Paladin
While your priority as a Holy Paladin will always be on keeping players alive, you can still help your group by dealing damage when no healing is needed. Just keep in mind that you need to be careful with your Mana to ensure you are not wasting too much on damage spells to the point you have none left for healing. Your overall damage priority will be as follows:
- Swap your Seal to
Seal of Righteousness to output extra damage. - Make sure that you are in melee range and auto attacking.
- Cast
Judgement and
Holy Strike on cooldown. - Keep
Consecration active. - Cast
Exorcism when possible.
Healing per Mana
In order to better understand your healing rotation and how each spell fits into the Holy Paladin kit, it can be beneficial to learn the Healing per Mana (HPM) and Healing per Cast Time (HPCT) of each ability. HPM will refer to how much healing a spell does divided by the amount of mana required to cast it. This measures how efficient a spell is to cast. While a spell may not offer the most amount of healing by itself, it can offer the most amount of healing per mana spent, leading to it being a more efficient choice. Healing per Cast time works similarly and tells you how much healing a spell will provide divide by the cast time.
When determining the best spells to cast, we are often looking at the HPM. The chart below provides information on the HPM of each spell with +715 healing, 315 int, 4% spell crit, and assumes standard healing talents (shoutout to DoubleZug):
| Spell | HPM | HPCT |
|---|---|---|
| Flash of Light | 5.75 | 498 |
| Holy Light | 4.15 | 1018 |
| Light's Vigil | 4.44 | 2898 |
| Holy Shock | 2.79 | 501 |
With this information, we can see that
Holy Shock is a very
inefficient spell to cast, offering very little healing for the amount of Mana
it costs.
Flash of Light reigns supreme in term of the healing it provides
and the Mana it costs.
Light's Vigil performs very well with HPM and HPCT,
but it also has such an expensive cost that it needs to have very high HPM. It is not
an ability you will be able to make frequent use of, and you will need to balance its usage
to survive an entire fight.
Utility
Paladins offer some of the best utility out of any class and understanding how best to use it can be the difference maker in a good paladin and a great one. Below we will discuss some of the important abilities you have at your disposal to give your group the highest odds of succeeding:
Blessing of Freedom grants your target immunity to movement
impairing effects. If your target is already rooted or frozen in place, casting
it will remove these debuffs. This ability is extremely valuable in PvP situations
specifically, but also has its uses in regular PvE content, i.e. when a melee DPS is
rooted in place while out of melee range.
Blessing of Protection causes the target to become immune to
any physical damage for its short duration. However, when you cast this on a
player, they will be unable to attack or deal physical damage. Typically this is
best used on casters or healers who have aggro and need to continue healing or
get enemies off them, including yourself.
Divine Intervention is one of the more iconic Paladin
abilities, allowing you to sacrifice yourself in order to remove your target from combat.
Typically this is used when your party or raid is about to wipe. You will cast
the ability on a Healer so that after the wipe they can start resurrecting players
without everyone needing to run back from the graveyard.
Voice of Truth grants immunity to silence and interrupt effects
for a short duration. During difficult moments, this can be valuable to use to
help ensure you are getting casts off. Especially valuable in PvP settings.
