On this page, you will learn how to optimize the rotation of your Retribution Paladin in both single-target and multiple-target PvE situations in WoW Forever. We also have advanced sections about cooldowns, procs, etc. in order to minmax your DPS.
Retribution Paladin Gameplay and Rotation Guide
Welcome to the Retribution Paladin rotation page, where you can find everything you need to know about playing as a Retribution Paladin in WoW Forever. On this page you will find information about the rotation for all relevant Retribution Paladin builds.
Retribution Paladins have two distinct builds with some variations within
each build, depending on the swing speed of your weapon. Both builds
use your core spells and abilities to deal as much damage as possible,
with slight variations on how and when you use some of your abilities.
You will be able to use the switches below to check the differences
between the
Unsealed Wrath focused build, and the Shockadin build, which
is heavily built around
Holy Shock.
Outside of your offensive rotation you will also have access to a large toolkit of utility spells. Both builds have some spare global cooldowns, and depending on your Raid group and the encounter you are currently fighting, it can be very beneficial to your Raid if you can squeeze in these utility abilities in those moments.
Unsealed Wrath Single-Target Rotation
The Unsealed Wrath build focuses on making use of all your damage-dealing
abilities while also weaving your
Seal of Command and
Seal of Righteousness
between globals, once you have a built up a specific amount of stacks via
Unsealed Wrath.
To maximize your damage you will have to make some snap decisions on whether you can cast an ability
before switching your Seals. Using a Swing Timer addon can help a lot here.
FAQWhat Is Considered a Slow or Fast Weapon?
When playing an Unsealed Wrath build as a Ret Paladin in WoW Forever, any two-handed weapon that is slower than a 3.0 weapon speed is considered slow, and you should therefore follow the rotational recommendations for a slow weapon. If you're playing with a weapon that is 2.9 speed or faster, make sure to play the fast weapon rotation instead.
You want your slow weapon to be as slow as possible, with speeds close to the maximum of 4.0 weapon speed being ideal. When playing with fast weapons you ideally want one as low as possible, with weapons as fast as 2.0 weapon speed potentially being available.
With
Unsealed Wrath every melee attack with a Seal active grants a stacking buff
which will replicate that Seal once per stack when you hit an enemy with a different
seal active. For example: hitting a target 3 times with
Seal of Command will give 3
stacks of
Echo of Command. If you then switch to
Seal of Righteousness, your
next auto-attack has 3 chances to activate the effect from Seal of Command, and give an
Echo of Righteousness. The ideal amount of Echoes to switch at depends on the
weapon you use.
Let's get into the actual rotational priorities:
- Use
Judgement with
Seal of the Crusader to apply the debuff if it is missing. Switch to
Seal of Command immediately after.
- Seal Swapping
- When using a Weapon with a Slow Swing Timer: Switch to
Seal of Righteousness with
3 stacks of
Echo of Command, and switch to
Seal of Command with 1+
Echo of Righteousness. - When using a Weapon with a Fast Swing Timer: Switch to
Seal of Command with
3 stacks of
Echo of Righteousness, and switch to
Seal of Righteousness with 1+
Echo of Command.
- When using a Weapon with a Slow Swing Timer: Switch to
- Cast
Hammer of Wrath on cooldown if the target is below 20% Health. - Cast
Consecration on cooldown. - Cast
Judgement on cooldown. - Use
Holy Strike on cooldown. - Cast
Exorcism on cooldown when fighting a Demon or Undead enemy.
If the target you are fighting can be stunned and someone else stuns it, you can delay
Judgement
slightly to use it with
Seal of Command for twice the damage.
Unsealed Wrath AoE Rotation
Your AoE rotation when playing with
Unsealed Wrath is effectively the same
as it is against a single enemy. You do not want to apply
Judgement with
Seal of the Crusader to more than one target, since your only consistent AoE
damage it affects is
Consecration. Make sure to still apply it to your main
target.
- If you are fighting several Demon or Undead enemies, you want to use
Holy Wrath on cooldown. - Use
Judgement with
Seal of the Crusader to apply the debuff if it is missing. Switch to
Seal of Command immediately after.
- Seal Swapping
- When using a Weapon with a Slow Swing Timer: Switch to
Seal of Righteousness with
3 stacks of
Echo of Command, and switch to
Seal of Command with 1+
Echo of Righteousness. - When using a Weapon with a Fast Swing Timer: Switch to
Seal of Command with
3 stacks of
Echo of Righteousness, and switch to
Seal of Righteousness with 1+
Echo of Command.
- When using a Weapon with a Slow Swing Timer: Switch to
- Cast
Hammer of Wrath on cooldown if the target is below 20% Health. - Cast
Holy Wrath on cooldown when fighting Demons or Undead enemies. - Cast
Consecration on cooldown. - Cast
Judgement on cooldown. - Use
Holy Strike on cooldown. - Cast
Exorcism on cooldown when fighting Demons or Undead enemies.
Shockadin Single-Target Rotation
The Shockadin build focuses on using a large amount of Spell Power to increase the damage
of your abilities, including
Holy Shock, which you pick up from the Holy talent tree.
This build wants to run a fast weapon to gain the most value from the flat Spell Power coefficient on
Seal of Righteousness. If your best weapon has a very slow swing speed, you can instead use
Seal of Command for roughly the same damage output.
If you are talented into
Consecrated Ground and only have 3 points in
Champion of the Light you
want to use
Hammer of Wrath just after your auto-attack, since casting it resets your swing
timer unless it is instant.
- Use
Judgement with
Seal of the Crusader to apply the debuff if it is missing. Switch to
Seal of Righteousness immediately after.
- Maintain
Seal of Righteousness, and refresh it when the remaining duration is below 10 seconds
and all other spells are on cooldown.
- Cast
Hammer of Wrath on cooldown if the target is below 20% Health. - Cast
Consecration on cooldown. - Cast
Judgement on cooldown. - Cast
Holy Strike on cooldown. - Cast
Holy Shock on cooldown. - Cast
Exorcism on cooldown when fighting a Demon or Undead enemy.
Shockadin AoE Rotation
The Shockadin build has no real rotational difference when fighting several enemies. You only
want to apply
Judgement with
Seal of the Crusader to your main target as
your other targets will only take Holy damage from
Consecration.
If you play with
Consecrated Ground and only 3 points in
Champion of the Light you
want to time
Hammer of Wrath to just after your auto-attacks, since it resets your swing
timer unless it is instant.
- If you are fighting several Demon or Undead enemies, you want to use
Holy Wrath on cooldown
for damage. - Use
Judgement with
Seal of the Crusader to apply the debuff to your priority target
if it is missing. Switch to
Seal of Righteousness immediately after.
- Maintain
Seal of Righteousness and refresh it when the remaining duration is below 10 seconds
and all other spells are on cooldown.
- Cast
Hammer of Wrath on cooldown if the target is below 20% Health. - Cast
Holy Wrath on cooldown when fighting Demons or Undead enemies. - Cast
Consecration on cooldown. - Cast
Judgement on cooldown. - Cast
Holy Strike on cooldown. - Cast
Holy Shock on cooldown. - Cast
Exorcism on cooldown when fighting Demons or Undead enemies.
Utility Spells
Paladins have access to a multitude of useful utility spells, many of which can be pull-saving when used at the right time. Below are some important utility spells and their possible use cases.
Divine Shield: A full immunity on a long cooldown that makes you immune
to all damage and removes you from all enemy threat tables during its duration. Your damage
is reduced during the effect, but it is worth it to save yourself if you find yourself getting
aggro from a Boss. It can also be used to ignore some mechanics that will cause you to lose
melee uptime.
Blessing of Protection: Makes your target immune to physical damage but stops
them from being able to attack themselves. The player will also lose aggro on any enemies targeting them, so it can be really
useful if a Healer gets aggro on enemies, which allows your tank to regain aggro during the effect.
Lay on Hands: Depletes all your Mana to heal your target for an amount equal to
your Maximum Health. Can be incredibly useful for saving a raid members' life, but use it cautiously as
the steep Mana cost will make Mana management a lot harder for the rest of the fight.
Purify: Removes a Poison or Disease effect from a friendly player. Depending on your
Raid composition, you might have to weave some of these in on certain fights with nasty debuffs.
Mana Management
Retribution Paladins use Mana as their main resource to cast all of their abilities, and you only have a few ways to regain
your Mana outside of limited consumables such as
Major Mana Potion and
Dark Rune.
Reverence
is a talent that allows up to 30% of your natural Mana regeneration to continue
even when actively using abilities within the 5-second rule, and can be a very potent talent over a longer
fight.
Sanctified Judgement will help recuperate a medium amount of Mana whenever you use
Judgement.
If fights drag out for longer periods of time and you find yourself running low on
Mana, you can switch to
Seal of Wisdom temporarily to regain extra
Mana. You can also hold back on casting
Consecration for a while, since it is
your most expensive ability.
