Talebound is a new standalone game mode coming with Patch 12.1.7, in which you will venture into dark tales as different character archetypes. Learn everything about this game mode!
Talebound Game Mode Basics
Talebound invites you to explore themed levels filled with enemies, bosses, puzzles, treasures, relics, and rewards. You are invited to do so in a standalone game mode, playing with three new character archetypes - the Witch, the Slayer, and the Inquisitor.
In this standalone game mode (similar to Plunderstorm), you will enter the village of Quillgrave, the main hub of Talebound. In Quillgrave, you can rest and spend currencies obtained by exploring the stories given to you by the Storyteller. Each retelling tests your abilities with each character archetype and grants exciting new rewards.
Talebound Character Archetypes
In Talebound, you do not play with your own character. Instead you're invited to create a new character and take on three new archetypes. These archetypes have individual talent trees, in which you learn and improve several different abilities.
The abilities for each archetype are unlocked as you participate in Talebound adventures, via
a currency called
Tales of Valor. You can use this currency to unlock new abilities for your
character archetypes and improve them. Check our talent calculator for more information!
Character Archetypes in Talebound
Wear a crown of moonlight and speak forgotten names. Nature ends to those who dance the crooked path.
The Witch is a spellcaster character that uses a combination of lightning, poison, brews, and creature summons to compel the darkness and fight alongside it. Here's a preview of the abilities the Witch can use:
Brewing Storm: A sequence of 3 attacks that damage
enemies in front of the player and root the
player in place. The final attack inflicts higher
damage and a longer stun.
"A witch's ire begins with a scouring wind and ends in a flash of lightning."
Thorn: Launches thorns that erupt beneath the
nearest 2 enemies. A weak attack that
can be cast while moving.
"Water the soil with fonts of blood leaked from the wounds of fallen foes."
Moonlight Ravens: Summons a flock of ravens every
second against enemies in front of you. Each raven inflicts damage in a
small area around its target. You may channel while moving.
"How sweetly mother moon kisses the wings of death's favored herald."
Bubbling Cauldron: Summons a bubbling cauldron to unleash
a plague of frogs for 9 sec. Frogs leap to a random enemy within 30 yards
and explode, inflicting damage in a small area.
"Sweet are poison's fumes, when turned upon one's enemy."
Winter Spiders: Call forth a swarm of spiders that
skitters forward 25 yards. The brood mother explodes after encountering an
enemy, inflicting high damage in a small area.
"Winter encroaches, chittering and patient, to spin with filaments of ice."
Feline Communion: You step through moonlight, reappearing
15 yards forward, and transform into a cat for 10 sec. While you are a cat, a
shower of stars inflicts damage against all enemies within 20 yards, and you
are able to cast Crooked Path and Full Moon.
Crooked Path: Step through moonlight, reappearing 15
yards forward.
Full Moon: The moon crashes down on your nearest foe
within 20 yards, inflicting high damage in a small area around your target
and ending your transformation.
Coven: Summons a coven of witches to assail your enemies
for 15 sec. When you strike enemies with Bubbling Cauldron, Winter Spiders,
or Moonlight Ravens, your Coven will attack those enemies with a similar
spell.
Take up your rifle, your pistol, your blades. As the poets say: a hunter must hunt.
The Slayer is a skilled brawler with the knowledge of martial might and weapons to combat the beasts of folklore. Slayers use combined sword and gun techniques to succeed in Talebound. Here's a preview of the abilities the Slayer can use:
Slash: A sequence of 3 attacks that damage enemies in
front of the player and root the player in place.
The final attack inflicts higher damage and
a longer stagger.
"A savior's blade tempered in the blood of nightmares."
Throwing Knives: A weak
attack that moves the player quickly and strikes nearby enemies. This
attack can be used to cancel a different player
attack in progress.
"If one blade mayn't serve, pierce the monster's hide with a surfeit of steel."
Shrapnel Round: Fires 4 rounds at enemies within 25
yards. Each round explodes inflicting damage to enemies within 3 yards.
"Pull the trigger, that the bullet might execute its contract."
Explosive Shot: Fires a shotgun blast at enemies in
front of you. Empower this ability for longer to deal greater damage. Nearer
enemies suffer damage from multiple shots. Castable
while moving.
"Gird your courage while the fuse burns, and your art will crack earth and rend flesh."
Minefield: You leap backwards and hurl an arc of mines
in front of you for 5 sec. Mines inflict damage and reduce enemy movement
speed for 3 sec.
"The clever slayer stole sulfur from hell to manifest inventions most destructive."
Silver Bolt: You leap into the air, becoming immune
to damage for 3 sec. You immediately fire a silver bolt inflicting
high damage at the enemy with the
highest health in range. You fire another bolt when this ability is cast
again or the leap fades. When this effect ends, you reappear on the ground
in your direction of movement.
"Drive a stake, wreathed in silver, into the heart of evil."
Danse Macabre: Wreathe yourself in smoke for 15 sec,
increasing movement speed by 40%, reducing incoming damage 50%, and gaining
a set of empowered abilities.
Wield your words like weapons, and keep the cleansing fires tended. They will be needed in the dark.
The Inquisitor is a holy zealot whose words light every corner and burns the face of evil, no matter what illusions it uses to hide. Here's a preview of the abilities the Inquisitor can use:
Purify: A sequence of 3 attacks that damage enemies in
front of the player and root the player in place.
The final attack inflicts higher damage and
a longer stun.
"A barrage of holy fire and righteous anger offers no quarter to the wicked."
Radiant Burst: Hurls fire at an enemy that explodes on
impact, damaging all nearby enemies. A weak
attack that can be cast while moving.
"Let your faith burn like a beacon, that it might set others alight."
Light's Wrath: Conjures a wrathful sun above an enemy
within 20 yards that burns up to 3 nearby enemies for 6.5 sec.
"The unholy vanish like mist before the Sun's radiance."
Rapture: Wreathes enemies within 25 yards in righteous
flames for 2 sec, then detonates the flames to inflict greater damage.
Roots you in place, but
inflicts high damage. You can activate
this ability again to end it early.
"The day of reckoning comes cruel to make the realm of sin a desolation."
Condemn: Condemn enemies in an 18 yard cone, inflicting
damage and reducing movement speed for 4 sec.
Castable while moving.
"Unto the perpetrators of vileness, may their hearts be rent to ash."
Denounce: Denounces the nearest enemy in front of you.
The longer you empower this ability the more damage you will inflict.
Roots you in place, but
inflicts high damage.
"The abominations shall cry their torment, consumed by righteous fire."
Divine Punishment: Channels Divine Punishment against the nearest
enemy for 6 sec, becoming immune to damage, and inflicting damage every 0.3
sec. When the duration ends, you leap at the targeted enemy and inflict high
damage against all enemies within 12 yards.
Talebound Stories
In Talebound, you will be able to experience one of four different tales inspired by darker World of Warcraft zones, each tale housing different bosses and available in four different difficulties: Normal, Veteran, Heroic and Mythic.
- Darkhaven: Based in Revendreth, it is home to the tale of Konrad von Sonnesheim, The Lord Marshal, and Alexandre Dozsenc, the Blood Bishop.
- Greenthistle Wood: Based on Bel'ameth, you can experience the stories of Granny Greenthumb, the Witch of the Woods, Ylska Vilefang, the Witch of the Wilds, and Mobog, the Giant of Greenthistle.
- Greywake's Expedition: Inspired by Stormsong Valley, find out about those who have fallen to Zzyg'th the Hadal Tyrant, and Chathoa, the Herald from Beyond.
- Grove of the Night Court: Inspired by Ardenweald, read about the tales of Tilywth, the Fairy Queen, and Maernok, the Nightmare King.
Quillgrave, the Talebound Hub
Quillgrave is the hub area of Talebound, based on Kul Tiran architecture. It offers warmth and respite from the darkness encroaching on each storyline.
In Quillgrave, you can also find several NPCs that you can exchange currencies earned throughout each adventure for upgrades to help you on your adventure. Check them out on our Talebound Power Upgrades calculator!
- The Scribe, as previously mentioned, takes
Tales of Valor
to improve and change your character archetype abilities to best each tale. - The Arcanist exchanges
Alkahest for powerful potions, draughts,
and flasks to use in your adventure. - The Antiquarian collects
Lost Relics found through the
stories of Talebound, exchanging them for meaningful, strong passive abilities
that change how you approach each storyline. - The Outfitter uses
Outfitter Supplies found through each
storyline to give you armor upgrades, including more Armor, Dodge, Critical Strike
chance, and more stats.
Talebound Rewards
Although Talebound is a standalone game mode, you can obtain plenty of rewards from the mode for your modern World of Warcraft game, such as achievements, mounts, pets, and housing decor! Check our guide for more information.
