General Information

Welcome to our Holy Paladin healing guide for World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth (BfA) 8.0.1. Here, you will learn everything you need to know about playing a Holy Paladin in a raid environment and in Mythic+ dungeons.

About Our Author

This guide has been written by Holy Paladin Theorycrafter Adamselene. He currently raids with War Front of Kel'Thuzad-US. You can find him on the Hammer of Wrath class Discord and the most up to date version of “The Light and How to Swing It” — the spreadsheet he maintains with Rhyno — can be found here.

1. Class Overview

Holy Paladins specialize in tank and single-target healing, with this being their primary role. They excel at this because of Beacon of Light Icon Beacon of Light and Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock, as well as their efficient single-target heals. They also possess several tools that help them mitigate or avoid damage, both on themselves and on other raid members, such as Blessing of Protection Icon Blessing of Protection and Devotion Aura Icon Devotion Aura.

Holy Paladins lack mobility, but in general they are viable in raids and dungeons.

In order to properly play a healing role, you will need more than just class-specific information. To better understand healing in general, we recommend that you read our healing guide.

2. Patch 8.0.1 Changes for Holy Paladins

  • All bonuses from Legion's artifact weapon traits will no longer work.
  • Holy Shock Icon Holy Shock has +30% increased chance to critically strike instead of double your current Critical Strike chance.
  • Infusion of Light Icon Infusion of Light increases Flash of Light Icon Flash of Light's healing by 40% (was 50%).
  • Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath now increases your healing done and Critical Strike chance by 30% (was 35% increased healing and 20% increased Critical Strike chance).
  • The power of most spells has been adjusted.
  • Holy Paladins are losing two talents, Fervent Martyr and Beacon of the Lightbringer.
  • They are also gaining Awakening Icon Awakening and Avenging Crusader Icon Avenging Crusader as talents.
  • Avenging Wrath Icon Avenging Wrath, Aura Mastery Icon Aura Mastery, and Holy Avenger Icon Holy Avenger have been added to the global cooldown.

3. Holy Paladin Strengths

4. Holy Paladin Weaknesses

  • Lack a raid-wide healing cooldown equivalent to Tranquility Icon Tranquility or Healing Tide Totem Icon Healing Tide Totem
  • Struggle to heal multiple spread targets quickly since it relies heavily on Light of Dawn Icon Light of Dawn for Area of Effect (AoE) healing
  • Are generally not a very mobile healer, with only Divine Steed Icon Divine Steed as a movement speed increase

5. Holy Paladin Viability in the Current Patch

Holy Paladins have been highly sought after healers for many expansions. While they might not be as strong in 8.0.1 as they have been in the past, that will not change. Holy Paladins bring a unique set of abilities among the healers that are incredibly valuable even if their raw healing is below average.

For Mythic+ dungeons, Holy Paladins will continue to be a top tier healer. While they have lost the 15% health buff, Righteousness, their strengths in single-target healing, survivability, and tools such as Beacon of Virtue Icon Beacon of Virtue remain in place. In addition, Holy Paladins will still provide respectable damage for a healer.
