Ping System Guide

Ping System Guide

Last Updated: Aug 9, 2026 - 11:53 PM (today)

This guide explains the major changes to the in-game Ping System, and how to access the options to make this system work for you!

1.

Introduction

In Midnight Patch 12.1, Blizzard introduced numerous quality of life changes to the in-game Ping System, intended to make it much more flexible and customizable. Read all about these changes below, and learn about the new macros, settings, and adjustments available to you.

2.

New Ping Flexibility

The biggest change to the Ping System is simply the new pingability of different UI elements, from spells to character resources, and even consumables.

2.1.

Pinging Spells

Pinging spells on your action bars OR on the Cooldown Manager results in a spell icon bubble over your character's head, as well as a printout in chat indicating that the spell is ready to use:

If your spell is still on cooldown, the chat printout will instead indicate the time left on its cooldown:

2.2.

Pinging Player Resources

Much to the delight of healers everywhere, player resources are now a pingable element in the Blizzard UI. Pinging directly on the resource you wish to communicate will result in a chat bubble over your character's head with the resource and percentage remaining, as well as a chat printout with the same:

2.3.

Pinging Items

The Ping System can also be used on various items on your action bars, from consumables like potions and Healthstones to trinkets.

Pinging any of these items will result in an item icon bubble over your character's head, as well as a chat printout indicating that the item is ready to use, or instead displaying the cooldown time remaining.

3.

Ping Icons

Alongside the above changes allowing for increased flexibility of pingable UI elements, Ping System icons are now visible on the Blizzard UI raid and party frames. When a party or raid member pings, the icon of their ping will show up directly on their frame on your UI.

4.

New Settings

The updated Ping System also comes with some new settings, allowing for further customization. Choose whether to see Pings on your Raid Frames, and adjust the Ping Mode:

  • Quick Ping mode is the default, in which a quick press and release of the ping keybind will contextually ping, while pressing and holding will open the full ping radial menu to select the specific ping icon.
  • Relaxed Ping mode is one in which holding the keybind and clicking will contextually ping, while pressing the keybind while clicking and dragging will open the radial menu.
4.1.

Ping System Targets

This is an especially interesting new setting that will adjust how you prefer your pings to interact with the game environment around you:

  • Environment means your pings will only hit objects or locations, attempting to ignore all units.
  • Units means your pings will only hit units, ignoring empty locations or objects.
  • Show All means your pings will land exactly where you send them, hitting both Environmental and Units in the world depending on how you are aiming.
5.

Ping System Macros

Along with the rest of the updated flexibility to the Ping System, creating specific Ping macros is now also a possibility, and doing so is very simple!

5.1.

Pinging Spells and Items

Just as you can now ping spells or items with a direct keybind, creating a ping for this function is also both possible and extremely simple:

  • To ping a spell: /pingspell: 1234 (spell ID or spell name);
  • To ping an item: /pingitem: 1234 (item ID or exact item name).
5.2.

Cursor Functionality

A favorite of WoW players, the [@cursor] functionality is now usable for Ping System macros. When using this target, the ping will ignore UI elements and units, and expliclity attempt to ping the environment only where your cursor sits.
