The War Within Evoker Specializations
Devastation Evoker
Devastation Evoker is a mid-range DPS spec, specializing in high mobility, target swapping,
and cleave damage. While other ranged DPS can struggle in high movement situations that
don't allow them to cast, Devastation is able to always reliably get their damage out
thanks to
Hover allowing them to not only cast while moving, but also reposition
quickly. Thanks to their mastery (
Mastery: Giantkiller), they are always looking
for opportunities to swap to new high-health targets that need to die quickly.
Despite having a limited range, Devastation Evokers have all the tools necessary to output
heavy amounts of damage no matter the target count. While their utility may also fall behind
that of Augmentation, they still offer more to their groups than most specs.
Time Spiral,
Spatial Paradox, and
Rescue all provide massive boosts to the groups mobility.
Zephyr can help to reduce damage intake and
Stretch Time has a unique benefit
of allowing you to soak dangerous mechanics that may kill other classes. With all different types
of utility, Devastation Evoker can always make an impact in any group.
How Popular is Devastation Evoker?
Raid Popularity
Devastation Evoker may not be the most highly desired range spec, but it is often seen in most compositions (sometimes even multiple in one raid) due to their ability to deal massive amounts of cleave damage and target-swapping. While many specs tend to suffer when having to swap targets, Devastation excels and actually gains damage. Combined with high mobility and high durability, the spec is a very strong choice for any player wanting to raid as Evoker.
Mythic+ Popularity
In a Mythic+ setting, you are often faced with situations where specific targets need to die
very quickly to prevent the group from being overwhelmed, or new targets spawn in that need
to be swapped to and dealt with quickly. Both of these challenges are areas where Devastation
has extreme strengths, allowing them to excel in a Mythic+ setting. Additionally, Devastation
has relatively short cooldowns with
Dragonrage only being two-minutes, allowing them
to constantly be able to output high damage on important packs compared to classes with much
longer cooldowns.
Preservation Evoker
Preservation Evoker is a healer specialization focused on utilizing Essence and Empower
abilities such as
Dream Breath and
Fire Breath to keep allies alive. Preservation
gameplay tends to focus around one of the most unique abilities in the game:
Echo. Allowing
you to replicate healing spells onto other targets that may not be able to hit normally, massively
increasing the total number of players you can heal with each ability. While this can require a bit
of planning and setup, Preservation also has tools to deal with unexpected incoming damage such
as
Verdant Embrace and
Emerald Blossom. The spec also has quite possibly the most
powerful raid healing cooldown:
Rewind.
As a Preservation Evoker, you will either focus on generating as many
Echos as possible
through spending essence but also by casting
Temporal Anomaly with the
Resonating Sphere
talent. Once you have Echos out, the next healing spell you cast will be replicated to targets with
Echo, allowing you to heal a large amount of players with a single ability, and with a healing spell
that best suits the damage windows you are facing.
Reversion for example can be useful
when dealing with a lot of slow ticking damage while
Verdant Embrace might be better to very
quickly heal players up. The key to Evoker is that you have choice. No matter what situation you are
facing, you have the tools necessary to handle it.
How Popular is Preservation Evoker?
Raid Popularity
Of every healer, Preservation is the only one with a 30-yard range, making it more difficult
to reach other players to heal them. Despite this, they are often tuned to do very high amounts
of healing and have also been given heavy mobility to counteract this weakness. They also possess
one of the strongest healing cooldowns in the game:
Rewind while also offering unique
utility such as
Time Spiral or
Spatial Paradox. While they are far from mandatory
in a raid setting, they are frequently brought due to their strong numbers and flexibility.
Mythic+ Popularity
In Mythic+, Preservation has consistently remained a top pick. The range weakness is not
nearly as prevalent in a Mythic+ setting which allows their strengths to better outshine their
weaknesses. It is also extremely easy for Preservation to output very high amounts of damage.
While other healers may have to sacrifice healing to deal damage, or even have complex DPS rotations,
Preservation can simply use
Fire Breath and
Deep Breath to deal high damage.

Augmentation Evoker
Augmentation Evoker is the only support specialization in the game. Rather than focusing
on healing allies or simply dealing damage, you instead provide your allies with
very strong buffs, allowing them to increase their own output. They can also provide utility that
no other specialization in the game can such as
Blistering Scales or
Draconic Attunements
in addition to class-wide utility such as
Time Spiral or
Spatial Paradox.
The core gameplay of Augmentation is based around
Ebon Might and
Prescience.
Both of these buffs provide your allies with strong increases to their output. With changes to
the spec in Midnight,
Ebon Might will apply to all damage dealing allies, but you
will need to pick your
Prescience targets carefully. This will increase an allies
critical strike as well as providing them a chance for their spells to deal additional damage
or healing.
It is important to keep in mind that while you are a support class, you are still considered a DPS. This is the role you will fill in dungeon and raid groups and while you are primarily buffing your allies, the healing and damage they do is attributed to you in Damage Meters and when looking at logs. The better your allies are playing their classes, the more damage you will do. The worse they are doing, the less you will do. You are highly reliant on your own teammates gameplay in order to truly succeed.
How Popular is Augmentation Evoker?
Raid Popularity
Augmentation has strong representation in Raiding largely due to the utility that
they bring. Most raid compositions will want at least one Evoker in order to gain the
Blessing of the Bronze raid buff, and Aug continues to be a very popular choice
to achieve this. They may never top the damage meters, but with their defensive options
and overall durability, they frequently see play at the highest levels of raiding.
Mythic+ Popularity
Augmentation Evoker has an up and down history in Mythic+, at times being by far the most popular spec and absolutely required to push anything key level higher. But after nerfs to the spec to combat its popularity, it has struggled to regain its footing and has become one of the least popular Mythic+ specs. While that doesn't mean that Augmentation is unplayable, it is safe to say that it will not be a highly desired spec heading into Midnight.
