Welcome to our Outlaw Rogue guide for World of Warcraft — Battle for Azeroth (BfA) 8.1. Here, you will learn how to play as a Outlaw Rogue in both raids and Mythic+ dungeons: from the very beginning to maximizing your DPS.

1. Outlaw Rogue Overview

Ahoy! Outlaw Rogue is a specialization that centers around managing resources while sustaining high damage to stacked targets. As in previous expansions, Outlaw is a fantastic jack of all trades that can comfortably handle any situation or fight type. Between the three Rogue specializations, Outlaw is the most effective in situations involving heavy cleave or AoE.

2. Patch 8.1 Changes for Outlaw Rogue

Patch 8.1 been gentle on Outlaw Rogues, and while we did not receive much changes, we did not lose much and some of the changes can be considered buffs.

3. Patch 8.0.1 Changes for Outlaw Rogue

Overall, Outlaw has not received significant changes. The single target rotation remains effectively the same as before, with minor deviations depending on talents. The only change that is noticeable is that Blade Flurry Icon Blade Flurry cannot be kept up 100% of the time, and as such, on prolonged AoE fights, you will need to work on timing it well, to line it up with your other cooldowns or maximum number of targets, to min-max damage. However, on short-term burst AoE , especially if it is infrequent, that still might not be too noticeable; due to having multiple charges, you can chain back to back.

  • Blade Flurry Icon Blade Flurry is no longer a toggle, and cannot be maintained permanently.
  • Feint Icon Feint has a cooldown, and cannot be maintained permanently.
  • Grappling Hook Icon Grappling Hook is now baseline.

4. Outlaw Rogue Strengths

  • Strong cleave and AoE
  • Very versatile
  • Exceptional defensive utility

5. Outlaw Rogue Weaknesses

  • Variance in damage output
  • Weak in spread AoE — targets can be quickly switched to, but not in cleave range
  • Resource/cooldown-reliant
  • Average single target damage

6. Outlaw Rogue Viability in the Current Patch

Outlaw is currently fairly competitive with both of the other Rogue specializations. It is hard to say definitively which spec will be the best for Uldir, as there are still numerous number changes going out, and all three specializations have the mechanical potential to be the best, so this will come down mostly to tuning. That being said, Subtlety does appear to sim about 2% higher than Outlaw. However, Outlaw does appear to have an edge over other specializations where it comes to AoE burst in lower level keystones.
