How to Unlock Azta'rec's Delve
You can defeat Azta'rec on two difficulties. Here's the requirements to unlock both of Azta'rec's difficulties:
- Tier ? unlocks when you clear a Tier 7 delve with at least one life remaining during Midnight Season 2.
- Tier ?? unlocks when you clear a Tier 10 delve with at least one life remaining during Midnight Season 2.
Azta'rec Loadout
We recommend downloading Deadly Boss Mods to be prepared for each of Azta'rec's casts and abilities. We also recommend the SnakeSays addon, to help with Azta'rec's intermissions.
Recommended Valeera Loadout
To make the most out of your companion during the fight, we recommend Valeera set up as a Healer. This will give you access to her poison dispel, on top of the healing she provides. Azta'rec's melee hurt quite a bit, so the additional sustain will be very valuable. If you have a reliable dispel and self healing, you can use Valeera as a DPS for the extra interrupt instead.
For poisons and curios, we recommend the following:
- Poison:
Phantasmal Spore Toxin or
Soulthirst Venom - Combat Curio:
Corrosive Bilespear - Utility Curio:
Soul-Cracking Dreamcatcher
Recommended Corrosive Codex Abilities
The Corrosive Codex from the Vaults of Atal'Utek works in Delves, including your fight against Azta'rec. We recommend the following abilities from the Corrosive Codex:
- Accursed Poison
- Virulent Mucus, Lithic Plumage or Plague of Corrosion
Azta'rec Strategy
On Tier ?, Azta'rec has a series of abilities, with a fight that mostly repeats through three intermission phases.
Throughout all phases, Azta'rec has access to the following abilities:
Noxious Bile: Azta'rec casts a cone of poison aimed at the player, dealing massive
Nature damage and leaving pools of poison on the ground. Sidestep the cone and avoid the pools of
poison whenever possible.
Void Toxin: A DOT that reduces Shadow damage done and inflicts massive Shadow
damage. This cast is interruptible but as it also leaves a DoT, it is easier to dispel it (or leave
Valeera to do the dispeling).
Soul Extinction is an interruptible cast that deals lethal Nature damage.
This cast must be interrupted at all times.
Venom Storm: Azta'rec summons slow-moving waves of poison that cross the
arena. They're easy to spot and should be dodged at all times.
Serpent's Strike is used against Tank specializations only, and deals a
massive amount of Physical damage. It is recommended to always have a defensive cooldown prepared
for it.
Azta'rec will always use his abilities in the following order: Noxious Bile > Void Toxin > Soul Extinction > Venom Storm > Serpent's Strike (tank only), until he reaches an intermission phase.
Intermissions
Before we start explaining the intermission, it is important to remind ourselves that Azta'rec's room is divided into four quadrants, separated via chains.
At 90%, 60% and 30%, Azta'rec will become near invulnerable, move to the
center of the room, and start chanting a
Sermon of Ula'tek. During the sermon, Azta'rec will
telegraph quadrants of the room with poison that will explode and deal massive Nature damage after
1-2 seconds. You must move to the clean quadrants.
Each time Azta'rec casts this ability, you will have to remember which quadrants are being highlighted before the boss repeats the pattern, killing you if you get caught in the wrong one:
- 90%: 3 times
- 60%: 4 times
- 30%: 5 times
You must take note of the order in which Azta'rec does this mechanic. After the three first waves, Azta'rec will repeat the sequence in the same order, but there will be no telegraphed indicators this time around.
Once the second set of waves is over, Azta'rec loses his shield, with the fight progressing as normal.
Tier ?? Changes
The fight does not change significantly on Tier ??. As usual, Azta'rec deals more damage and has
more health. Noticeable changes happen during the
Sermon of Ula'tek intermission phases:
- At the start of all intermissions, Azta'rec now summons an Echo of Azta'rec. The Echo does the same abilities as Azta'rec with the same level of lethality, and ideally must be killed before Azta'rec completes his Sermon of Ula'tek intermissions, otherwise you will be dealing with two NPCs dealing lethal damage with abilities.
- The memory sequence from Sermon of Ula'tek has an increased number of hits:
- 90%: 5 times
- 60%: 6 times
- 30%: 7 times
- With these changes in mind, we recommend saving offensive cooldowns to deal with each Echo of Azta'rec, as the fight is pretty static-y outside of the Sermons. As each Sermon lasts longer due to the increasing amount of segments, we recommend long cooldowns like Bloodlust and pots on the first Sermon at 90% health.
- In addition to this, we recommend stopping the Echo's
Soul Extinction casts
with crowd controls rather than hard interrupts, as to not run into the risk of not having
interrupts available for the real Azta'rec (who is immune to CCs).
