About the Author

Oxygen is a veteran of the MOBA genre, which he has been playing for nearly 15 years. He has coached some of Heroes of the Storm's most prominent North American players and teams alike, including Team Liquid. As a Master player, he enjoys playing all Heroes and roles.

1. General Li-Ming Gameplay

Li-Ming's main backline role throughout all stages of the game is to damage everything in sight while remaining in a safe position, due to her fragility. The flexibility of her abilities allows him to function very well as both a solo laner and with other players. Her high sustained damage output is a useful tool: though she poorly solos Mercenary Camps due to her small Health pool and limited self sustain, she will quickly dispatch them when accompanied. As with all ranged Assassins, a key skill to master is stutter-stepping.

In general, make sure that there is always something friendly — allied Heroes, Structures, or Minions — standing between you and your opponents' Heroes. This makes it much harder for them to use their dangerous crowd control abilities against you. This becomes especially important as the game progresses.

2. When Not Team Fighting

Li-Ming is an extremely strong early game laner. Arcane Orb Icon Arcane Orb rapidly kills Minions while Magic Missiles Icon Magic Missiles can deal significant poke damage to Heroes. Her long-ranged abilities let her punish those who come near all while allowing you to safely siege. As such, your primary goal is to soak and push your chosen lane while avoiding ganks. Avoid ganks by paying attention to adjacent lanes for missing Heroes via the Minimap. Do not waste your Teleport Icon Teleport's cooldown unless you can safely secure a kill with it; it is your only reliable escape tool. Conserve at least 50 Mana at all times, the required amount to cast it.

Though you are a decent duelist, avoid traveling between lanes while unaccompanied. You are at your safest within Teleportation range of a Gate Structure. There are times, however, where you must leave the relative safety of your lane. Your sustained damage output can greatly help your allies to take down Mercenary Camps and opposing Structures. Certain map objectives will also require you to join your team for impending skirmishes and team fights.

One very important aspect of playing Li-Ming well is understanding her sieging potential. In general, it allows you to stretch the amount of time you spend soaking lane Experience while you would otherwise be rotating, such as for grouping up to fight over Map Objectives. This potential has some important implications in terms of map presence and general pressure; it means that you are almost always threatening to generate more Experience than your opponents or can push a won team fight into an overwhelming advantage. General map awareness is an important skill to develop so as to be able to capitalise on as many opportunities as possible.

3. When Team Fighting

Team fighting as Li-Ming is straightforward: use Magic Missiles Icon Magic Missiles, Arcane Orb Icon Arcane Orb and Disintegrate Icon Disintegrate as they come off cooldown, and repeat this rotation as Critical Mass Icon Critical Mass triggers. Remain behind your frontline and near your Support Heroes. Priority targets include anything currently being crowd controlled, low Health targets, and generally more fragile Heroes. Do not hesitate, however, to attack what you can safely hit. A common mistake is to believe that "Tanks should never be hit". This is only true when you can choose your target, something that is seldom possible.

Critical Mass Icon Critical Mass can single-handedly turn the tide of battle in your team's favor. Properly using the Trait by practicing the rapid successive use of your abilities is therefore essential, even against non-players if not only to develop your muscle memory. Remember that, in general, Li-Ming's abilities are all much easier to use against targets under the effects of crowd control. Tight or otherwise enclosed spaces that forces Heroes to funnel through can further help you out with accurate hits.

4. Summary of Tips and Tricks

  • Adapt your talent choices to the match at hand; Teleport Icon Teleport-centric builds tend to be more defensive and versatile, but provide less overall damage.
  • Magic Missiles Icon Magic Missiles is your main source of sustained damage; do not be afraid of using the ability on-cooldown, as it is cheap and readily up.
  • Succesfully using Arcane Orb Icon Arcane Orb is the biggest factor in getting Hero kills; do not waste the ability, but do not expect perfect hits either.
  • Disintegrate Icon Disintegrate is for raw damage, wheras Wave Of Force Icon Wave Of Force is for peeling and interrupting.
  • Exploiting Critical Mass Icon Critical Mass is key to playing Li-Ming; do not forget about it. Make your Hero kills count for double.
